Numerical solution of linear models in economics: The SP-DG model revisited
In general, complex and large dimensional models are needed to solve real economic problems. Due to these characteristics, there is either no analytical solution for them or they are not attainable. As a result, solutions can be only obtained through numerical methods. Thus, the growing importance of computers in Economics is not surprising. This paper focuses on an implementation of the SP-DG model, using Matlab,developed by the students as part of the Computational Economics course. A Multi-Cloud Warm-Absorber Model for NGC 4051
A multi-cloud model is presented which explains the soft X-ray excess in NGC
4051 and, consistently, the optical line spectrum and the SED of the continuum.
The clouds are heated and ionized by the photoionizing flux from the active
center and by shocks. Diffuse radiation, partly absorbed throughout the clouds,
nicely fits the bump in the soft X-ray domain, while bremsstrahlung radiation
from the gaseous clouds contribute to the fit of the continuum SED. Debris of
high density fragmented clouds are necessary to explain the absorption oxygen
throats observed at 0.87 keV and 0.74 keV. The debris are heated by shocks of
about 200-300 km/s. Low velocity (100 km/s)-density (100 cm-3) clouds
contribute to the line and continuum spectra, as well as high velocity (1000
km/s)-density (8000 cm-3) clouds which are revealed by the FWHM of the line
profiles. The SED in the IR is explained by reradiation of dust, however, the
dust-to-gas ratio is not particularly high. Radio emission is well fitted by

Study of latencies in ThingSpeak
IoT platforms play an important role on modern measurement systems because they allow the ingestion and processing of huge amounts of data (big data). Given the increasing use of these platforms, it is important to characterize their performance and robustness in real application scenarios. The paper analyzes the ThingSpeak platform by measuring the latencies associated to data packets sent to cloud and replied back, and by checking the consistency of the returned data. Several experiments were done considering different ways to access the platform: REST API, MQTT API, and MQTT broker alone. For each experiment, the methodology is explained, results are presented, and conclusions are extracted. The REST and MQTT APIs have similar performances, with roundtrip times between 1 s and 3 s. The MQTT broker alone is more agile, with roundtrip times below 250 ms. In all cases, the up and down links are far from being symmetric, with the uplink delay showing higher variance than the downlink delay. Examining the relationship between sugar content, packaging features, and food claims of breakfast cereals
Excessive free-sugar intake has become highly prevalent in numerous countries, and Portugal is not the exception. One product category that contributes to the daily intake of free sugars is breakfast cereals. In the current work, we identified 289 exemplars from two major retailers in Portugal and collected information on their nutritional profile (e.g., sugar, salt, fiber per 100 g), price, packaging features, type of food claims present (e.g., statements about the composition, sensory features, the origin of the product), and ingredients list. Overall, the sugar content of breakfast cereals was high (Mean = 19.9 g), and less than 10% of the products complied with the current national guidelines (i.e., 5 g of sugar per 100 g of product). Sugar (or other sugar sources) was listed in the top three ingredients for over 85% of the products. On average, each product included about four claims (Mean = 3.9), and sugar content was lower when the claims were related to the product composition. Critically, the sugar content was particularly high for children-oriented products (Mean = 26.4 g). Correlation analysis showed that breakfast cereals with higher sugar content also were cheaper and had lower quantities of fiber, proteins, and salt. Our findings suggest the need to implement strategies to reduce sugar in this product category (e.g., incentivize manufacturers to reformulate products). Also, our results may inform strategies aimed at promoting consumers’ awareness about the sugar content in breakfast cereals and other processed foods, facilitating healthier decision-making.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Evidence for a Physically Compact Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 5548
We have combined HST/FOS and ground-based spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC
5548 to study the narrow emission lines over the 1200 -- 10,000 angstrom
region. All of the spectra were obtained when the broad emission line and
continuum fluxes were at an historic low level, allowing us to accurately
determine the contribution of the narrow-line region (NLR) to the emission
lines. We have generated multicomponent photoionization models to investigate
the relative strength of the high ionization lines compared to those in Seyfert
2 galaxies, and the weakness of the narrow Mg II 2800 line. We present evidence
for a high ionization component of NLR gas that is very close to the nucleus
(~1 pc). This component must be optically thin to ionizing radiation at the
Lyman edge (tau = 2.5) to avoid producing [O I] and Mg II in a partially
ionized zone. The very high ionization lines (N V, [Ne V], [Fe VII], [Fe X])
are stronger than the predictions of our standard model, and we show that this
may be due to supersolar abundances and/or a ``blue bump'' in the extreme
ultraviolet (although recent observations do not support the latter). An outer
component of NLR gas (at only ~70 pc from the continuum source) is needed to
produce the low ionization lines. We show that the outer component may contain
dust, which further reduces the Mg II flux by depletion and by absorption of
the resonance photons after multiple scatterings. We show that the majority of
the emission in the NLR of NGC 5548 must arise within about ~70 pc from the
nucleus. Thus, the NLR in this Seyfert 1 galaxy is very physically compact,

Infrared FeII Emission in Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We obtained 0.8-2.4 micron spectra at a resolution of 320 km/s of four
narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in order to study the near-infrared properties
of these objects. We focus on the analysis of the FeII emission in that region
and the kinematics of the low-ionization broad lines. We found that the 1
micron FeII lines (9997 A, 10501 A, 10863 A and 11126 A) are the strongest FeII
lines in the observed interval. For the first time, primary cascade lines of
FeII arising from the decay of upper levels pumped by Ly-alpha fluorescence are
resolved and identified in active galactic nuclei. Excitation mechanisms
leading to the emission of the 1 micron FeII features are discussed. A
combination of Ly-alpha fluorescence and collisional excitation are found to be
the main contributors. The flux ratio between near-IR FeII lines varies from
object to object, in contrast to what is observed in the optical region. A good
correlation between the 1 micron and optical FeII emission is found. This
suggests that the upper z4Fo and z4Do levels from which the bulk of the optical
lines descend are mainly populated by the transitions leading to the 1 micron
lines. The width and profile shape of FeII 11127, CaII 8642 and OI 8446 are
very similar but significantly narrower than Pa-beta, giving strong
observational support to the hypothesis that the region where FeII, CaII and OI
are produced are co-spatial, interrelated kinematically and most probably

Risk assessment of exposure to multiple mycotoxins in the Icelandic population
Background: The proliferation of mycotoxin-producing fungi in agricultural settings poses a challenge to human health and nutrition around the world. Mycotoxins contaminate food sources and their negative health outcomes include carcinogenic, nephrotoxic, and teratogenic effects. Potential risks are still poorly characterized and few studies assess exposure at an individual level. Thus, the goal of this study was to assess and characterize exposure risk to multiple mycotoxins in the Icelandic population. Methods: Urine samples and data on urinary mycotoxin biomarkers (deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and ochratoxin A) from a pool of 171 individuals living in Iceland between 2020 and 2021 were used to estimate external doses through reverse dosimetry. For risk characterization, Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Margin of Exposure (MoE) approaches were applied for deoxynivalenol zearalenone, and ochratoxin A, respectively. Results: The Icelandic population was revealed to be exposed to multiple mycotoxins. Mean levels of deoxynivalenol and ochratoxin A were comparable to what have been reported in other European studies, while levels of zearalenone were considerably lower. Nevertheless, risk assessment revealed safe levels of exposure to deoxynivalenol and zearalenone (HQ < 1) but MoE based on a neoplastic endpoint to ochratoxin A indicated a possible health concern for all participants (MoE < 10000). Conclusions: Although there are some uncertainties associated with a human biomonitoring approach, the results of this study confirm that mycotoxins are a growing threat to public health in the European continent. Since countries with different latitudes already present comparable levels of exposure, this is especially concerning in a climate change scenario. The optical-ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies
This paper aims to understand the continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies. By fitting
the single galaxies in the sample of Heckman et al. (1995) with composite
models (shock+ photoionization from the active center), we show that five main
components characterize the SED of the continuum. Shocks play an important role
since they produce a high temperature zone where soft X-rays are emitted.
We show that in the optical-UV range, the slope of the NLR emission
reproduces the observed values, and may be the main component of the
featureless continuum. The presence of star forming regions cannot be excluded
in the circumnuclear region of various Seyfert galaxies. An attempt is made to
find their fingerprints in the observed AGN spectra. Finally, it is
demonstrated that multi-cloud models are necessary to interpret the spectra of

On ionisation effects and abundance ratios in damped Lyman-alpha systems
The similarity between observed velocity structures of Al III and singly
ionised species in damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) suggests the presence of
ionised gas in the regions where most metal absorption lines are formed.
To explore the possible implications of ionisation effects we construct a
simplified two-region model for DLAs consisting of an ionisation bounded region
with an internal radiation field and a neutral region with a lower metal
content. Within this framework we find that ionisation effects are important.
If taken into account, the element abundance ratios in DLAs are quite
consistent with those observed in Milky Way stars and in metal-poor H II
regions in blue compact dwarf galaxies. In particular we cannot exclude the
same primary N origin in both DLAs and metal-poor galaxies. From our models no
dust depletion of heavy elements needs to be invoked; little depletion is
