Unusual ending of the second dorsal metacarpal artery as proper palmar digital arteries
Background: The proper palmar digital arteries arise infrequently from dorsal metacarpal arteries. This work reports the second dorsal metacarpal artery unusual ending and a vascular variation related to the superficial palmar arch.
Materials and methods: Fresh human upper limbs routine dissection, from a male cadaver, injected with coloured elastomeric material, immersed in 10% formalin.
Results: The second dorsal metacarpal artery presented terminal branches, the index finger medial proper digital palmar artery and the middle finger lateral proper digital palmar artery. At the division point of both terminal branches, the second dorsal metacarpal artery anastomoses with a thin forth common digital palmar artery.
Conclusions: The value of this knowledge about the infrequent vascular dispoÂsition lies in vascularised flaps design using the second dorsal metacarpal artery. (Folia Morphol 2018; 77, 2: 393–396
Optical Microphone For Photoacoustic Spectroscopy
An optical microphone configuration is experimentally demonstrated. It is based on the deflection of a He-Ne laser beam from a thin reflective pellicle bound on one edge over the duct of a conventional photoacoustic cell. Possible applications of this kind of photoacoustic detection are discussed.6473722372
An international network to monitor the structure, composition and dynamics of Amazonian forests (RAINFOR)
The Amazon basin is likely to be increasingly affected by environmental changes: higher temperatures, changes in precipitation, CO2 fertilization and habitat fragmentation. To examine the important ecological and biogeochemical consequences of these changes, we are developing an international network, RAINFOR, which aims to monitor forest biomass and dynamics across Amazonia in a co-ordinated fashion in order to understand their relationship to soil and climate. The network will focus on sample plots established by independent researchers, some providing data extending back several decades. We will also conduct rapid transect studies of poorly monitored regions. Field expeditions analysed local soil and plant properties in the first phase (2001–2002). Initial results suggest that the network has the potential to reveal much information on the continental-scale relations between forest and environment. The network will also serve as a forum for discussion between researchers, with the aim of standardising sampling techniques and methodologies that will enable Amazonian forests to be monitored in a coherent manner in the coming decades
The new Heavy Ion ERDA set up at iThemba LABS Gauteng : multilayer thin film depth profiling using direct calculation and Monte Carlo simulation codes
We report here on the recently built Heavy Ion ERDA set up at iThemba LABS Gauteng; describing a typical
application in the study of interfacial reactions in an Al2O3–Ti ceramic–metal multilayer structure
annealed in vacuum at 800 C for 2 h. Depth profile extraction was found to be best obtained through
combined use of direct calculation and Monte Carlo simulation codes as opposed to using just either
of the methods. The obtained profile suggests a case of the Kirkendall effect, whereupon the inter-diffusion
between the metal and the ceramic was largely due to the faster diffusion of the metal into the amorphous
ceramic than diffusion of the ceramic elements into the metallic layer.National Research Foundation (iThemba LABS) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).http://www.elsevier.com/locate/nimbhb201
Micro-PIXE mapping of mineral distribution in mature grain of two pearl millet cultivars
Micro-proton-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) was used to map the distribution of several nutritionally
important minerals found in the grain tissue of two cultivars of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum
(L.) R. Br.). The distribution maps revealed that the predominant localisation of minerals was within the
germ (consisting of the scutellum and embryo) and the outer grain layers (specifically the pericarp and
aleurone); whilst the bulk of the endosperm tissue featured relatively low concentrations of the surveyed
minerals. Within the germ, the scutellum was revealed as a major storage tissue for P and K, whilst Ca,
Mn and Zn were more prominent within the embryo. Fe was revealed to have a distinctive distribution
pattern, confined to the dorsal end of the scutellum; but was also highly concentrated in the outer grain
layers. Interestingly, the hilar region was also revealed as a site of high accumulation of minerals, particularly
for S, Ca, Mn, Fe and Zn, which may be part of a defensive strategy against infection or damage.
Differences between the two cultivars, in terms of the bulk Fe and P content obtained via inductively
coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), concurred with the average concentration data
determined from the analysis of micro-PIXE spectra specifically extracted from the endosperm tissue.NRF : iThemba LABS and the University of Pretoria.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/nimb2016-11-15hb201

Efficient transplacental IgG transfer in women infected with Zika virus during pregnancy
Zika virus (ZIKV) is a newly-identified infectious cause of congenital disease. Transplacental transfer of maternal IgG to the fetus plays an important role in preventing many neonatal infections. However, antibody transfer may also have negative consequences, such as mediating enhancement of flavivirus infections in early life, or trafficking of virus immune complexes to the fetal compartment. ZIKV infection produces placental pathology which could lead to impaired IgG transfer efficiency as occurs in other maternal infections, such as HIV-1 and malaria. In this study, we asked whether ZIKV infection during pregnancy impairs transplacental transfer of IgG. We enrolled pregnant women with fever or rash in a prospective cohort in Vitoria, Brazil during the recent ZIKV epidemic. ZIKV and dengue virus (DENV)-specific IgG, ZIKV and DENV neutralizing antibodies, and routine vaccine antigenspecific IgG were measured in maternal samples collected around delivery and 20 paired cord blood samples. We concluded that 8 of these mothers were infected with ZIKV during pregnancy and 12 were ZIKV-uninfected. The magnitude of flavivirus-specific IgG, neutralizing antibody, and vaccine-elicited IgG were highly correlated between maternal plasma and infant cord blood in both ZIKV-infected and -uninfected mother-infant pairs. Moreover, there was no difference in the magnitude of plasma flavivirus-specific IgG levels between mothers and infants regardless of ZIKV infection status. Our data suggests that maternal ZIKV infection during pregnancy does not impair the efficiency of placental transfer of flavivirus-specific, functional, and vaccine-elicited IgG. These findings have implications for the neonatal outomes of maternal ZIKV infection and optimal administration of antibody-based ZIKV vaccines and therapeutics
Photoacoustic Spectroscopy For Depth-profile Analysis And Herbicide Monitoring In Leaves
Depth profiles of double-layer biological samples obtained by photoacoustic spectroscopy were studied using the two-signal phase-resolved method. The application of the method was demonstrated by singling out the spectra of the cuticle and the pigment layers of a leaf, and the pericarps and the endosperm layers of a corn kernel. The use of the method for monitoring temporal changes occurring in a leaf under the action of a herbicide was also investigated.112111487149
Preventing and addressing the stress reactions of health care workers caring for patients with COVID-19: Development of a digital platform (Be + against COVID)
Background: COVID-19 became a major public health concern in March 2020. Due to the high rate of hospitalizations for COVID-19 in a short time, health care workers and other involved staff are subjected to a large workload and high emotional distress.
Objective: The objective of this study is to develop a digital tool to provide support resources that might prevent and consider acute stress reactions in health care workers and other support staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: The contents of the digital platform were created through an evidence-based review and consensus conference. The website was built using the Google Blogger tool. The Android version of the app was developed in the Java and XML languages using Android Studio version 3.6, and the iOS version was developed in the Swift language using Xcode version 11.5. The app was evaluated externally by the Andalusian Agency for Healthcare Quality.
Results: We detected the needs and pressing situations of frontline health care workers, and then, we proposed a serial of recommendations and support resources to address them. These resources were redesigned using the feedback received. A website in three different languages (Spanish, English, and Portuguese) and a mobile app were developed with these contents, and the AppSaludable Quality Seal was granted to the app. A specific self-report scale to measure acute stress and additional tools were included to support the health care workforce. This instrument has been used in several Latin American countries and has been adapted considering cultural differences. The resources section of the website was the most visited with 18, 516 out of 68, 913 (26.9%) visits, and the “Self-Report Acute Stress Scale” was the most visited resource with 6468 out of 18, 516 (34.9%) visits.
Conclusions: The Be + against COVID platform (website and app) was developed and launched to offer a pool of recommendations and support resources, which were specifically designed to protect the psychological well-being and the work morale of health care workers. This is an original initiative different from the usual psychological assistance hotlines
