Rejection of randomly coinciding events in ZnMoO scintillating bolometers
Random coincidence of events (particularly from two neutrino double beta
decay) could be one of the main sources of background in the search for
neutrinoless double beta decay with cryogenic bolometers due to their poor time
resolution. Pulse-shape discrimination by using front edge analysis, mean-time
and methods was applied to discriminate randomly coinciding events in
ZnMoO cryogenic scintillating bolometers. These events can be effectively
rejected at the level of 99% by the analysis of the heat signals with rise-time
of about 14 ms and signal-to-noise ratio of 900, and at the level of 92% by the
analysis of the light signals with rise-time of about 3 ms and signal-to-noise
ratio of 30, under the requirement to detect 95% of single events. These
rejection efficiencies are compatible with extremely low background levels in
the region of interest of neutrinoless double beta decay of Mo for
enriched ZnMoO detectors, of the order of counts/(y keV kg).
Pulse-shape parameters have been chosen on the basis of the performance of a
real massive ZnMoO scintillating bolometer. Importance of the
signal-to-noise ratio, correct finding of the signal start and choice of an
appropriate sampling frequency are discussed
Dietary fat intake as a risk factor for the development of diabetes. Multinational, multicenter study of the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes (MGDS)
In the context of the Multinational MGSD Nutrition Study, three groups of subjects were studied: 204 subjects with recently diagnosed diabetes(RDM),42subjectswithundiagnoseddiabetes(UDM)(AmericanDiabetesAssociation criteria—fasting plasma glucose [FPG] 126 mg/dl), and 55 subjects with impaired fasting glucose(IFG)(FPG 110and126mg/dl).Eachgroupwascomparedwithacontrolgroupof nondiabetic subjects, matched one by one for center, sex, age, and BMI. Nutritional habits were evaluated by a dietary history method, validated against the 3-day diet diary. In RDM, the questionnaire referred to the nutritional habits before the diagnosis of diabetes. Demographic data were collected, and anthropometrical and biochemical measurements were taken. RESULTS— Compared with control subjects, RDM more frequently had a family history of diabetes(49.0vs.14.2%;P0.001),exercisedless(exerciseindex53.5vs.64.4;P0.01),and more frequently had sedentary professions (47.5 vs. 27.4%; P 0.001). Carbohydrates contributed less to their energy intake (53.5 vs. 55.1%; P 0.05), whereas total fat (30.2 0.5 vs. 27.8 0.5%; P 0.001) and animal fat (12.2 0.3 vs. 10.8 0.3%; P 0.01) contributed moreandtheplant-to-animalfatratiowaslower(1.50.1vs.1.80.1;P0.01).UDMmore frequentlyhadafamilyhistoryofdiabetes(38.1vs.19.0%;P0.05)andsedentaryprofessions (58.5vs.34.1%;P0.05),carbohydratescontributedlesstotheirenergyintake(47.61.7vs. 52.81.4%;P0.05),totalfat(34.71.5vs.30.41.2%;P0.05)andanimalfat(14.2 0.9 vs. 10.6 0.7%; P 0.05) contributed more, and the plant-to-animal fat ratio was lower (1.6 0.2 vs. 2.3 0.4; P 0.05). IFG differed only in the prevalence of family history of diabetes (32.7 vs. 16.4%; P 0.05). CONCLUSIONS— Our data support the view that increased animal fat intake is associated with the presence of diabetes
Chemotherapy against cancer during pregnancy : a systematic review on neonatal outcomes
Background: The concomitant incidence of cancer and pregnancy has increased in recent years because of the increase in maternal age at the time of the 1st pregnancy. The diagnosis of cancer in a pregnant woman causes ethical and therapeutic problems for both the patient and the physician. The main aim of this paper is to describe the available evidence concerning the short-and longterm neonatal impact of chemotherapy given to pregnant women. Methods:The relevant publications in English were identified by a systematic review of MEDLINE and PubMed for the last 15 years. The search strategy included "cancer[Title/Abstract] OR tumor[Title/Abstract] AND pregnancy[Title/Abstract] OR pregnant[Title/Abstract] AND embryo[Title/Abstract] or fetus[Title/Abstract] or neonate[Title/Abstract] or newborn[Title/Abstract] or pediatric[Title/Abstract] or child[Title/Abstract] AND English[lang]." Results:An analysis of the literature showed that only the administration of chemotherapy during the embryonic stage of conceptus is dangerous and can lead to the termination of the pregnancy. When the disease is diagnosed in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of gestation or when it is possible to delay the initiation of chemotherapy beyond the 14th week, the risk of severe problems for the fetus are low, and pregnancy termination is not required. Conclusion: Data regarding the final outcome of children who have received in utero chemotherapy seem reassuring. Only the administration in the embryonal stage of conceptus is dangerous and can lead to the termination of pregnancy. When the disease is diagnosed in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of gestation or when it is possible to delay the initiation of chemotherapy beyond the 14th week, the risk of severe problems for the fetus are low and pregnancy termination is not needed. Increased knowledge of how to minimize the risks of chemotherapy can reduce improper management including unnecessary termination of pregnancy, delayed maternal treatment, and iatrogenic preterm delivery
Proceedings of the third French-Ukrainian workshop on the instrumentation developments for HEP
The reports collected in these proceedings have been presented in the third
French-Ukrainian workshop on the instrumentation developments for high-energy
physics held at LAL, Orsay on October 15-16. The workshop was conducted in the
scope of the IDEATE International Associated Laboratory (LIA). Joint
developments between French and Ukrainian laboratories and universities as well
as new proposals have been discussed. The main topics of the papers presented
in the Proceedings are developments for accelerator and beam monitoring,
detector developments, joint developments for large-scale high-energy and

Axion searches with the EDELWEISS-II experiment
We present new constraints on the couplings of axions and more generic
axion-like particles using data from the EDELWEISS-II experiment. The EDELWEISS
experiment, located at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, primarily aims at
the direct detection of WIMPs using germanium bolometers. It is also sensitive
to the low-energy electron recoils that would be induced by solar or dark
matter axions. Using a total exposure of up to 448 kg.d, we searched for
axion-induced electron recoils down to 2.5 keV within four scenarios involving
different hypotheses on the origin and couplings of axions. We set a 95% CL
limit on the coupling to photons GeV in
a mass range not fully covered by axion helioscopes. We also constrain the
coupling to electrons, , similar to the more
indirect solar neutrino bound. Finally we place a limit on , where is the
effective axion-nucleon coupling for Fe. Combining these results we
fully exclude the mass range keV for DFSZ axions and
keV for KSVZ axions
Molecular and Functional Characterization of Three Different Postzygotic Mutations in PIK3CA-Related Overgrowth Spectrum (PROS) Patients: Effects on PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling and Sensitivity to PIK3 Inhibitors
BACKGROUND PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) include a group of disorders that affect only the terminal portion of a limb, such as type I macrodactyly, and conditions like fibroadipose overgrowth (FAO), megalencephaly-capillary malformation (MCAP) syndrome, congenital lipomatous asymmetric overgrowth of the trunk, lymphatic, capillary, venous, and combined-type vascular malformations, epidermal nevi, skeletal and spinal anomalies (CLOVES) syndrome and Hemihyperplasia Multiple Lipomatosis (HHML). Heterozygous postzygotic PIK3CA mutations are frequently identified in these syndromes, while timing and tissue specificity of the mutational event are likely responsible for the extreme phenotypic variability observed.
METHODS:
We carried out a combination of Sanger sequencing and targeted deep sequencing of genes involved in the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in three patients (1 MCAP and 2 FAO) to identify causative mutations, and performed immunoblot analyses to assay the phosphorylation status of AKT and P70S6K in affected dermal fibroblasts. In addition, we evaluated their ability to grow in the absence of serum and their response to the PI3K inhibitors wortmannin and LY294002 in vitro.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:
Our data indicate that patients' cells showed constitutive activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway. Of note, PI3K pharmacological blockade resulted in a significant reduction of the proliferation rate in culture, suggesting that inhibition of PI3K might prove beneficial in future therapies for PROS patients
CUORE and beyond: bolometric techniques to explore inverted neutrino mass hierarchy
The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will
search for neutrinoless double beta decay of Te. With 741 kg of TeO
crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of
interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta
decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected
neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is y
at ( y at the 90% confidence level), which
corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range
40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light
detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness
of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy

Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors
Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes
for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the
nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for
bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background
suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and
light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like
bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the
sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb
experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass
of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana
neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the
so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. We highlight the main

Integration of Hi-C with short and long-read genome sequencing reveals the structure of germline rearranged genomes
Structural variants are a common cause of disease and contribute to a large extent to inter-individual variability, but their detection and interpretation remain a challenge. Here, we investigate 11 individuals with complex genomic rearrangements including germline chromothripsis by combining short- and long-read genome sequencing (GS) with Hi-C. Large-scale genomic rearrangements are identified in Hi-C interaction maps, allowing for an independent assessment of breakpoint calls derived from the GS methods, resulting in >300 genomic junctions. Based on a comprehensive breakpoint detection and Hi-C, we achieve a reconstruction of whole rearranged chromosomes. Integrating information on the three-dimensional organization of chromatin, we observe that breakpoints occur more frequently than expected in lamina-associated domains (LADs) and that a majority reshuffle topologically associating domains (TADs). By applying phased RNA-seq, we observe an enrichment of genes showing allelic imbalanced expression (AIG) within 100 kb around the breakpoints. Interestingly, the AIGs hit by a breakpoint (19/22) display both up- and downregulation, thereby suggesting different mechanisms at play, such as gene disruption and rearrangements of regulatory information. However, the majority of interpretable genes located 200 kb around a breakpoint do not show significant expression changes. Thus, there is an overall robustness in the genome towards large-scale chromosome rearrangements
CUORE-0 results and prospects for the CUORE experiment
With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV
(0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory
for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta
decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in
2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE
projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1
sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time,
corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range
40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric
detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric
detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy.
CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE
experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g
each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE
recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own,
CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta
decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an
update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. An analysis of
the background indicates that the CUORE performance goal is satisfied while the
