    Spatially-resolved Spectroscopy of the IC443 Pulsar Wind Nebula and Environs

    Deep Chandra ACIS observations of the region around the putative pulsar, CXOU J061705.3+222117, in the supernova remnant IC443 reveal, for the first time, a ring-like morphology surrounding the pulsar and a jet-like structure oriented roughly north-south across the ring and through the pulsar location. The observations further confirm that (1) the spectrum and flux of the central object are consistent with a rotation-powered pulsar interpretation, (2) the non-thermal surrounding nebula is likely powered by the pulsar wind, and (3) the thermal-dominated spectrum at greater distances is consistent with emission from the supernova remnant. The cometary shape of the nebula, suggesting motion towards the southwest (or, equivalently, flow of ambient medium to the northeast), appears to be subsonic; there is no evidence for a strong bow shock, and the circular ring is not distorted by motion through the ambient medium

    Age-Related Impairment of Ultrasonic Vocalization in Tau.P301L Mice: Possible Implication for Progressive Language Disorders

    Tauopathies, including Alzheimer's Disease, are the most frequent neurodegenerative diseases in elderly people and cause various cognitive, behavioural and motor defects, but also progressive language disorders. For communication and social interactions, mice produce ultrasonic vocalization (USV) via expiratory airflow through the larynx. We examined USV of Tau.P301L mice, a mouse model for tauopathy expressing human mutant tau protein and developing cognitive, motor and upper airway defects.At age 4-5 months, Tau.P301L mice had normal USV, normal expiratory airflow and no brainstem tauopathy. At age 8-10 months, Tau.P301L mice presented impaired USV, reduced expiratory airflow and severe tauopathy in the periaqueductal gray, Kolliker-Fuse and retroambiguus nuclei. Tauopathy in these nuclei that control upper airway function and vocalization correlates well with the USV impairment of old Tau.P301L mice.In a mouse model for tauopathy, we report for the first time an age-related impairment of USV that correlates with tauopathy in midbrain and brainstem areas controlling vocalization. The vocalization disorder of old Tau.P301L mice could be, at least in part, reminiscent of language disorders of elderly suffering tauopathy

    Telephone-administered psychotherapy for depression in MS patients: moderating role of social support

    Depression is common in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). While psychotherapy is an effective treatment for depression, not all individuals benefit. We examined whether baseline social support might differentially affect treatment outcome in 127 participants with MS and depression randomized to either Telephone-administered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (T-CBT) or Telephone-administered Emotion-Focused Therapy (T-EFT). We predicted that those with low social support would improve more in T-EFT, since this approach emphasizes the therapeutic relationship, while participants with strong social networks and presumably more emotional resources might fare better in the more structured and demanding T-CBT. We found that both level of received support and satisfaction with that support at baseline did moderate treatment outcome. Individuals with high social support showed a greater reduction in depressive symptoms in the T-CBT as predicted, but participants with low social support showed a similar reduction in both treatments. This suggests that for participants with high social support, CBT may be a more beneficial treatment for depression compared with EFT

    Evidence for monosynaptic projections from the nucleus retroambiguous to hindlimb motoneurons in the cat

    The nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) is a group of premotor neurons at the transition between brainstem and spinal cord. It projects to certain motoneuronal cell groups, among which is a distinct set of motoneurons in the lumbar enlargement innervating muscles including iliopsoas, adductor longus, and hamstrings. To find out whether these NRA-motoneuronal projections are monosynaptic, injections of wheat germ-agglutinin horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into the NRA were combined with injections of cholera toxin subunit b (CTb) into the hamstring muscles. Electron microscopical examination revealed that the NRA terminal profiles make monosynaptic contacts with dendrites of motoneurons innervating these muscles. The NRA terminal profiles formed asymmetrical synapses, and contained spherical and a few dense core vesicles. These findings provide evidence of monosynaptic NRA-hindlimb motoneuronal projections which are likely to be excitatory. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd

    The distribution pattern of estrogen receptors in the rodent CNS has been reported extensively, but mapping of estrogen receptors in primates is incomplete. In this study we describe the distribution of estrogen receptor alpha immunoreactive (ER-alpha 1R) neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord of the rhesus monkey. In the midbrain, ER-alpha IR neurons were located in the periaqueductal gray, especially the caudal ventrolateral part, the adjacent tegmentum, peripeduncular nucleus, and pretectal nucleus. A few ER-alpha IR neurons were found in the lateral parabrachial nucleus, lateral pontine tegmentum, and pontine gray medial to the locus coeruleus. At caudal medullary levels, ER-alpha IR neurons were present in the commissural nucleus of the solitary complex and the caudal spinal trigeminal nucleus. The remaining regions of the brainstem were devoid of ER-alpha IR neurons. Spinal ER-alpha IR neurons were found in laminae I-V, and area X, and were most numerous in lower lumbar and sacral segments. The lateral collateral pathway and dorsal commissural nuclei of the sacral cord and the thoracic intermediolateral cell column also contained ER-a IR neurons. Estrogen treatment did not result in any differences in the distribution pattern of ER-alpha IR neurons. The results indicate that ER-alpha IR neurons in the primate brainstem and spinal cord are concentrated mainly in regions involved in sensory and autonomic processing. Compared with rodent species, the regional distribution of ER-alpha IR neurons is less widespread, and ER-a IR neurons in regions such as the spinal dorsal horn and caudal spinal trigeminal nucleus appear to be less abundant. These distinctions suggest a modest role of ER-a in estrogen-mediated actions on primate brainstem and spinal systems.
