Compressible Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model
We introduce a Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model with the addition of
elastic degrees of freedom. The problem is formulated in terms of an effective
four-spin Hamiltonian in the pressure ensemble, which can be treated by the
replica method. In the replica-symmetric approximation, we analyze the
pressure-temperature phase diagram, and obtain expressions for the critical
boundaries between the disordered and the ordered (spin-glass and
ferromagnetic) phases. The second-order para-ferromagnetic border ends at a
tricritical point, beyond which the transition becomes discontinuous. We use
these results to make contact with the temperature-concentration phase diagrams

Inhibitory synchrony as a mechanism for attentional gain modulation
Recordings from area V4 of monkeys have revealed that when the focus of
attention is on a visual stimulus within the receptive field of a cortical
neuron, two distinct changes can occur: The firing rate of the neuron can
change and there can be an increase in the coherence between spikes and the
local field potential in the gamma-frequency range (30-50 Hz). The hypothesis
explored here is that these observed effects of attention could be a
consequence of changes in the synchrony of local interneuron networks. We
performed computer simulations of a Hodgkin-Huxley type neuron driven by a
constant depolarizing current, I, representing visual stimulation and a
modulatory inhibitory input representing the effects of attention via local
interneuron networks. We observed that the neuron's firing rate and the
coherence of its output spike train with the synaptic inputs was modulated by
the degree of synchrony of the inhibitory inputs. The model suggest that the
observed changes in firing rate and coherence of neurons in the visual cortex
could be controlled by top-down inputs that regulated the coherence in the
activity of a local inhibitory network discharging at gamma frequencies.Comment: J.Physiology (Paris) in press, 11 figure
Biophysical characterization of the outer membrane polysaccharide export protein and the polysaccharide co-polymerase protein from Xanthomonas campestris
This study investigated the structural and biophysical characteristics of GumB and GumC, two Xanthomonas campestris membrane proteins that are involved in xanthan biosynthesis. Xanthan is an exopolysaccharide that is thought to be a virulence factor that contributes to bacterial in planta growth. It also is one of the most important industrial biopolymers. The first steps of xanthan biosynthesis are well understood, but the polymerization and export mechanisms remain unclear. For this reason, the key proteins must be characterized to better understand these processes. Here we characterized, by biochemical and biophysical techniques, GumB, the outer membrane polysaccharide export protein, and GumC, the polysaccharide co-polymerase protein of the xanthan biosynthesis system. Our results suggested that recombinant GumB is a tetrameric protein in solution. On the other hand, we observed that both native and recombinant GumC present oligomeric conformation consistent with dimers and higher-order oligomers. The transmembrane segments of GumC are required for GumC expression and/or stability. These initial results provide a starting point for additional studies that will clarify the roles of GumB and GumC in the xanthan polymerization and export processes and further elucidate their functions and mechanisms of action.Fil: Bianco, María Isabel. What next for Geography Education? A perspective from the International Geographical Union - Commission for Geography Education
In the last two years the Commission of Geography Education of the International Geographical Union (IGU-CGE) has been involved in the declaration of two key documents: the 2016 International Charter, declared in Beijing, and the International Declaration on Geography Education, declared in Moscow in 2015. Both of these declarations emphasise the importance of international collaboration particularly around the sharing of research findings and understandings within geography education. One of the challenges facing the commission to meet these objectives is the huge variety in the status and scope of geography education in different countries. Based on the assumption that the status of geography education within National Curricula indicates the likely investment in research and research findings, the paper draws upon data on the prevalence of geography education around the world, to analyse the differing levels of importance prescribed to the subject. The results indicate that a coming together of international geography educators has never been timelier, as geography flourishes and waivers significantly in different places. The paper highlights the important role of organisations like the IGU- CGE to offer political support for geography education both within National Curricula but also as a field of enquiry and scholarly research
DCO, DCN and ND reveal three different deuteration regimes in the disk around the Herbig Ae star HD163296
The formation pathways of deuterated species trace different regions of
protoplanetary disks and may shed light into their physical structure. We aim
to constrain the radial extent of main deuterated species; we are particularly
interested in spatially characterizing the high and low temperature pathways
for enhancing deuteration of these species. We observed the disk surrounding
the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 using ALMA in Band 6 and obtained resolved
spectral imaging data of DCO (=3-2), DCN (=3-2) and ND
(=3-2). We model the radial emission profiles of DCO, DCN and
ND, assuming their emission is optically thin, using a parametric model
of their abundances and radial excitation temperature estimates. DCO can be
described by a three-region model, with constant-abundance rings centered at 70
AU, 150 AU and 260 AU. The DCN radial profile peaks at about ~60 AU and
ND is seen in a ring at ~160 AU. Simple models of both molecules using
constant abundances reproduce the data. Assuming reasonable average excitation
temperatures for the whole disk, their disk-averaged column densities (and
deuterium fractionation ratios) are 1.6-2.6 cm
(0.04-0.07), 2.9-5.2 cm (0.02) and 1.6-2.5 cm (0.34-0.45) for DCO, DCN and ND, respectively.
Our simple best-fit models show a correlation between the radial location of
the first two rings in DCO and the DCN and ND abundance
distributions that can be interpreted as the high and low temperature
deuteration pathways regimes. The origin of the third DCO ring at 260 AU is
unknown but may be due to a local decrease of ultraviolet opacity allowing the
photodesorption of CO or due to thermal desorption of CO as a consequence of
radial drift and settlement of dust grains
Increased HCO production in the outer disk around HD 163296
Three formaldehyde lines were observed (HCO 3--2, HCO
3--2, and HCO 3--2) in the protoplanetary disk
around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 with ALMA at 0.5 arcsecond (60 AU) spatial
resolution. HCO 3--2 was readily detected via imaging, while
the weaker HCO 3--2 and HCO 3--2 lines
required matched filter analysis to detect. HCO is present throughout most
of the gaseous disk, extending out to 550 AU. An apparent 50 AU inner radius of
the HCO emission is likely caused by an optically thick dust continuum. The
HCO radial intensity profile shows a peak at 100 AU and a secondary bump at
around 300 AU, suggesting increased production in the outer disk. Different
parameterizations of the HCO abundance were compared to the observed
visibilities with minimization, using either a characteristic
temperature, a characteristic radius or a radial power law index to describe
the HCO chemistry. Similar models were applied to ALMA Science Verification
data of CO. In all modeling scenarios, fits to the HCO data show an
increased abundance in the outer disk. The overall best-fit HCO model shows
a factor of two enhancement beyond a radius of 27020 AU, with an inner
abundance of . The HCO emitting region has a lower
limit on the kinetic temperature of K. The CO modeling suggests
an order of magnitude depletion in the outer disk and an abundance of in the inner disk. The increase in HCO outer disk emission
could be a result of hydrogenation of CO ices on dust grains that are then
sublimated via thermal desorption or UV photodesorption, or more efficient
gas-phase production beyond about 300 AU if CO is photodisocciated in this
region
Exploring DCO as a tracer of thermal inversion in the disk around the Herbig Ae star HD163296
We aim to reproduce the DCO emission in the disk around HD163296 using a
simple 2D chemical model for the formation of DCO through the cold
deuteration channel and a parametric treatment of the warm deuteration channel.
We use data from ALMA in band 6 to obtain a resolved spectral imaging data cube
of the DCO =3--2 line in HD163296 with a synthesized beam of
0."53 0."42. We adopt a physical structure of the disk from the
literature that reproduces the spectral energy distribution. We then apply a
simplified chemical network for the formation of DCO that uses the physical
structure of the disk as parameters along with a CO abundance profile, a
constant HD abundance and a constant ionization rate. Finally, from the
resulting DCO abundances, we calculate the non-LTE emission using the 3D
radiative transfer code LIME. The observed DCO emission is reproduced by a
model with cold deuteration producing abundances up to .
Warm deuteration, at a constant abundance of , becomes
fully effective below 32 K and tapers off at higher temperatures, reproducing
the lack of DCO inside 90 AU. Throughout the DCO emitting zone a CO
abundance of is found, with 99\% of it frozen out below
19 K. At radii where both cold and warm deuteration are active, warm
deuteration contributes up to 20\% of DCO, consistent with detailed
chemical models. The decrease of DCO at large radii is attributed to a
temperature inversion at 250 AU, which raises temperatures above values where
cold deuteration operates. Increased photodesorption may also limit the radial
extent of DCO. The corresponding return of the DCO layer to the
midplane, together with a radially increasing ionization fraction, reproduces

Influence of Feeding Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Yeast Cell Wall on Growth Performance and Digestive Function of Feedlot Cattle during Periods of Elevated Ambient Temperature.
In experiment 1, eighty crossbred steers (239±15 kg) were used in a 229-d experiment to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of enzymatically hydrolyzed yeast (EHY) cell wall in diets on growth performance feedlot cattle during periods of elevated ambient temperature. Treatments consisted of steam-flaked corn-based diets supplemented to provide 0, 1, 2, or 3 g EHY/hd/d. There were no effects on growth performance during the initial 139-d period. However, from d 139 to harvest, when 24-h temperature humidity index averaged 80, EHY increased dry matter intake (DMI) (linear effect, p<0.01) and average daily gain (ADG) (linear effect, p = 0.01). There were no treatment effects (p>0.10) on carcass characteristics. In experiment 2, four Holstein steers (292±5 kg) with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used in a 4×4 Latin Square design experiment to evaluate treatments effects on characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion in steers. There were no treatment effects (p>0.10) on ruminal pH, total volatile fatty acid, molar proportions of acetate, butyrate, or estimated methane production. Supplemental EHY decreased ruminal molar proportion of acetate (p = 0.08), increased molar proportion of propionate (p = 0.09), and decreased acetate:propionate molar ratio (p = 0.07) and estimated ruminal methane production (p = 0.09). It is concluded that supplemental EHY may enhance DMI and ADG of feedlot steers during periods of high ambient temperature. Supplemental EHY may also enhance ruminal fiber digestion and decrease ruminal acetate:propionate molar ratios in feedlot steers fed steam-flaked corn-based finishing diets
The Effect of a Commercially Available Pre-Workout Supplement (The Bracket™) on Wingate Anaerobic Cycle Test Performance in Athletic Females
The Bracket™ is a proprietary blend, pre-workout supplement whose primary active ingredients consists mostly of a mixture of creatine, B-complex vitamins, and a glycerol/taurine combination. It has been third party tested for ingredient accuracy, and is also certified by NSF, meaning that it is certified for sports consumption. Previous research has been done on the ingredients within the supplement utilizing male demographics. However, there is limited research done on the pre-workout supplement as a whole. The little research done has showed no increases in any variables such as power output (relative/absolute) and/or rate of fatigue. Very little research has been done utilizing a female population, let alone athletic females. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of a commercially available pre-workout supplement (The Bracket™), in athletic females, on absolute peak power (APP), absolute mean power (AMP), relative peak power (RPP), relative mean power (RMP), rate of fatigue (FTR), absolute total work (ATW), and relative total work (RTW) utilizing the Wingate Anaerobic Cycle Test (WACT), a 30-s supra maximal exercise protocol. METHODS: Thirteen athletic females, ages 18-30, with no prior hamstrings or quadriceps injuries within the last years were recruited. All subjects underwent three experimental trials [treatment (TRT, supplement with Gatorade®), placebo (PLC, Gatorade®), and a control (CON, water)] in a single blind balanced crossover design. During the trials the subjects had to ingest one of the three liquids in an 8 ounce serving thirty minutes prior to engaging in the WACT. Each trial was performed approximately one week apart. The differences in the dependent variables between treatments were analyzed using an ANOVA (0 between, 1 within), α=0.05. RESULTS: No significant difference between trials were seen for APP (TRT=715 ± 126 W; PLC=71 6± 125 W; CON=696 ± 147 W) (p=0.2940), AMP (TRT=446 ± 94 W; PLC=436 ± 85 W; CON=441 ± 91 W)(p=0.3930), RPP (TRT=11.6 ±. 1.4 W·kg-1; PLC=11.6 ±. 1.5 W·kg-1; CON=11.3 ±. 1.5 W·kg-1)(p=0.2280), RMP (TRT=7.3 ±. 1.4 W·kg-1; PLC=7.1 ± 1.1 W·kg-1; CON=7.2 ±. 1.3 W·kg-1)(p=0.3920), FTR (TRT=62 ± 13%; PLC=61 ± 11%; CON=59 ± 11%) (p=0.1920), ATW (TRT=13368 ± 2798 J; PLC=13066 ± 2550 J; CON=13246 ± 2749 J)(p=0.4100), or RTW (TRT=218 ± 42 J·kg-1; PLC=212 ± 33 J·kg-1; CON= 215 ± 38 J·kg-1)(p=0.4080). CONCLUSION: Ingestion of (The Bracket™) prior to exercise does not affect performance on the WACT in athletic females
Solución de alto rendimiento para el geoportal de turismo de la Comunitat Valenciana
La Agència Valenciana de Turisme ha emprendido el proyecto de actualización de la web de promoción de la Comunidad Valenciana, el portal http://www.comunitatvalenciana.com. Este portal es una referencia internacional para todos los visitantes de la Comunidad Valenciana y por tanto un proyecto clave en su promoción turística. En esta ponencia se presentará la elaboración de un geoportal turístico atractivo y preparado para soportar un número elevado de visitas. En el contexto del proyecto se han abordado problemas como la visualización de información vectorial (puntos de interés) en un elevado número mediante la técnica de agregación o clustering. Por otro lado dicha información vectorial se procesa de tal forma que el visitante de la web obtiene un rendimiento en los tiempos de respuesta bastante elevado gracias al uso de técnicas de multirresolución en el visor web. La información de partida se migra a una base de datos espacial libre y se procesa para generar archivos en formato JSON. Por otro lado, el geoportal ofrece un flexible motor de búsquedas, preparado igualmente para soportar una carga elevada de peticiones mediante el uso de la indexación con el soporte para consultas espaciales. Este motor de búsquedas igualmente se ha preparado para utilizarse como servidor para ofrecer toda la información del portal a través de Layar, un servicio de realidad aumentada para móviles. Este servicio está completamente basado en componentes libres como el framework Spring o el soporte de búsquedas Lucene. Se presentará por tanto cómo se ha abordado la realización de una solución completa de presentación de información de un portal turístico de exigencias de rendimiento elevadas, centrando la atención en los componentes del servidor, todos ellos basados en software libre
