    Approach to the extremal limit of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole

    The quasinormal-mode spectrum of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole is studied in the limit of near-equal black-hole and cosmological radii. It is found that the mode_frequencies_ agree with the P"oschl-Teller approximation to one more order than previously realized, even though the effective_potential_ does not. Whether the spectrum approaches the limiting one uniformly in the mode index is seen to depend on the chosen units (to the order investigated).     Characterization of primary biogenic aerosol particles in urban, rural, and high-alpine air by DNA sequence and restriction fragment analysis of ribosomal RNA genes

    This study explores the applicability of DNA analyses for the characterization of primary biogenic aerosol (PBA) particles in the atmosphere. Samples of fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) and total suspended particulates (TSP) have been collected on different types of filter materials at urban, rural, and high-alpine locations along an altitude transect in the south of Germany (Munich, Hohenpeissenberg, Mt. Zugspitze). <br><br> From filter segments loaded with about one milligram of air particulate matter, DNA could be extracted and DNA sequences could be determined for bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. Sequence analyses were used to determine the identity of biological organisms, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses (T-RFLP) were applied to estimate diversities and relative abundances of bacteria. Investigations of blank and background samples showed that filter materials have to be decontaminated prior to use, and that the sampling and handling procedures have to be carefully controlled to avoid artifacts in the analyses. <br><br> Mass fractions of DNA in PM<sub>2.5</sub> were found to be around 0.05% in urban, rural, and high-alpine aerosols. The average concentration of DNA determined for urban air was on the order of ~7 ng m<sup>−3</sup>, indicating that human adults may inhale about one microgram of DNA per day (corresponding to ~10<sup>8</sup> haploid bacterial genomes or ~10<sup>5</sup> haploid human genomes, respectively). <br><br> Most of the bacterial sequences found in PM<sub>2.5</sub> were from <i>Proteobacteria</i> (42) and some from <i>Actinobacteria</i> (10) and <i>Firmicutes</i> (1). The fungal sequences were characteristic for <i>Ascomycota</i> (3) and <i>Basidiomycota</i> (1), which are known to actively discharge spores into the atmosphere. The plant sequences could be attributed to green plants (2) and moss spores (2), while animal DNA was found only for one unicellular eukaryote (protist). <br><br> Over 80% of the 53 bacterial sequences could be matched to one of the 19 T-RF peaks found in the PM<sub>2.5</sub> samples, but only 40% of the T-RF peaks did correspond to one of the detected bacterial sequences. The results demonstrate that the T-RFLP analysis covered more of the bacterial diversity than the sequence analysis. Shannon-Weaver indices calculated from both sequence and T-RFLP data indicate that the bacterial diversity in the rural samples was higher than in the urban and alpine samples. Two of the bacterial sequences (<i>Gammaproteobacteria</i>) and five of the T-RF peaks were found at all sampling locations

    We propose a novel formalism for simultaneously describing both, the hard and soft parton dynamics in ultrarelativistic collisions of nuclei. The emission of gluons from the initially coherent parton configurations of the colliding nuclei and low-ptp_t color coherence effects are treated in the framework of a Yang-Mills transport equation on a coupled lattice-particle system. A collision term is added to the transport equation to account for the remaining intermediate and high-ptp_t interactions in an infrared finite manner.Comment: 8 page

    Group Approach to the Quantization of the P\"oschl-Teller dynamics

    The quantum dynamics of a particle in the Modified P\"oschl-Teller potential is derived from the group SL(2,R)SL(2,R) by applying a Group Approach to Quantization (GAQ). The explicit form of the Hamiltonian as well as the ladder operators is found in the enveloping algebra of this basic symmetry group. The present algorithm provides a physical realization of the non-unitary, finite-dimensional, irreducible representations of the SL(2,R)SL(2,R) group. The non-unitarity manifests itself in that only half of the states are normalizable, in contrast with the representations of SU(2) where all the states are physical.Comment: 17 pages, LaTe

    Quasinormal modes of d-dimensional spherical black holes with a near extreme cosmological constant

    We derive an expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations in near extreme d-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes. We show that, in the near extreme limit, the dynamics of the scalar field is characterized by a Poschl-Teller effective potential.     Proton drip-line nuclei in Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory

    Ground-state properties of spherical even-even nuclei 14≀Z≀2814\leq Z \leq 28 and N=18,20,22N=18,20,22 are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Binding energies, two-proton separation energies, and proton rmsrms radii that result from fully self-consistent RHB solutions are compared with experimental data. The model predicts the location of the proton drip-line. The isospin dependence of the effective spin-orbit potential is discussed, as well as pairing properties that result from the finite range interaction in the pppp channel.Comment: 12 pages, RevTex, 10 p.s figures, submitted to Phys.     Necessary conditions for variational regularization schemes

    We study variational regularization methods in a general framework, more precisely those methods that use a discrepancy and a regularization functional. While several sets of sufficient conditions are known to obtain a regularization method, we start with an investigation of the converse question: How could necessary conditions for a variational method to provide a regularization method look like? To this end, we formalize the notion of a variational scheme and start with comparison of three different instances of variational methods. Then we focus on the data space model and investigate the role and interplay of the topological structure, the convergence notion and the discrepancy functional. Especially, we deduce necessary conditions for the discrepancy functional to fulfill usual continuity assumptions. The results are applied to discrepancy functionals given by Bregman distances and especially to the Kullback-Leibler divergence.Comment: To appear in Inverse Problem

    Field propagation in de Sitter black holes

    We present an exhaustive analysis of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in the background of Schwarzchild-de Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetimes. The field propagation is considered by means of a semi-analytical (WKB) approach and two numerical schemes: the characteristic and general initial value integrations. The results are compared near the extreme cosmological constant regime, where analytical results are presented.     The supersymmetric modified Poschl-Teller and delta-well potentials

    New supersymmetric partners of the modified Poschl-Teller and the Dirac's delta well potentials are constructed in closed form. The resulting one-parametric potentials are shown to be interrelated by a limiting process. The range of values of the parameters for which these potentials are free of singularities is exactly determined.     Continuum effects for the mean-field and pairing properties of weakly bound nuclei

    Continuum effects in the weakly bound nuclei close to the drip-line are investigated using the analytically soluble Poschl-Teller-Ginocchio potential. Pairing correlations are studied within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method. We show that both resonant and non-resonant continuum phase space is active in creating the pairing field.
