Numerical analysis of potential failure modes in shear walls of the tunnel form concrete system: Performance-based approach
Similar to other structural systems, the nonlinear modeling process of the tunnel-form concrete system necessitates an understanding of the potential failure modes in its primary lateral load-bearing members. With the identification of failure modes in the elements, deformation-control actions, force-control actions and deformation parameters are determined, making the analysis/design process straightforward. Given the unique characteristics of the tunnel-form concrete system, the applicability of design requirements and assumptions proposed for other similar systems for this structural system remains uncertain. In this study, to assess the potential failure modes of the walls of the system, two different modeling scenarios were utilized, employing pushover and time-history analyses. Within the scope of the studied 5- and 10-story buildings and the adopted assumptions, the results revealed that in the walls, shear is controlled by deformation and bending is force-control. In the incremental analysis, the bending failure mode of the walls (reaching yielding in vertical rebars) was estimated to be almost 10% higher than that of the shear failure mode (achieving an immediate occupancy limit). In the time-history analysis, under the design hazard level (475-year return period), the shear strain in the walls exceeded 13 times the strain at the onset of nonlinear shear behavior. This is because the wall sections still retained sufficient flexural-axial capacity and, contrary to code-based predictions, remained far from the flexural failure mode. The investigations further demonstrated that shear failure in the system was sufficiently ductile and capable of adequately absorbing and dissipating seismic input energy
Estimation of seismic response parameters and capacity of irregular tunnel-form buildings
Insufficient information about the seismic performance of tunnel-form buildings and limited relevant design codes and standards are the main barriers towards application of these systems in seismically active areas. Vertical and horizontal irregularity of typical tunnel-form buildings is another cumbersome challenge restricting the application of these systems. To address these issues, this study aims to evaluate the seismic behaviour of tunnel-form buildings with horizontal irregularity and develop appropriate design methodologies. Based on the results of 3, 5, 7 and 10-storey buildings, new response modification factors are proposed as a function of seismic demand and expected performance level. Fragility curves are also derived for various levels of intensity, and simple equations are introduced to estimate uncoupled frequency ratios. The results, in general, demonstrate the flexible torsional behaviour of irregular tunnel-form structures and their adequate seismic resistance capacity. The buildings studied herein, managed to satisfy the immediate occupancy performance requirements under design-basis earthquake, which implies that the plan regularity requirement for tunnel-form buildings in seismic codes may be too conservative. Moreover, it is concluded that using response modification factor equal to 5 can generally result in sufficient stability and adequate performance level under both design basis and maximum considered earthquake scenarios
Seismic reliability analysis of steel moment-resisting frames retrofitted by vertical link elements using combined series–parallel system approach
The eccentric bracing system equipped with vertical links is capable of providing high levels of stiffness, strength and ductility, and therefore, can be efficiently used for seismic retrofit of existing structures. This study aims to investigate the seismic reliability of steel moment-resisting frames retrofitted by this system using a novel combined series–parallel system approach. The seismic response of 4, 8 and 12-storey steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) are evaluated under a set of design basis earthquakes (DBE) before and after retrofitting intervention. Adopting an engineering demand parameter approach (EDP-Based) for reliability assessment and development of analytical models for the frames using systems consisting of the series–parallel elements are the major distinctions between the present study and the other similar works. To estimate the global reliability of the frames, first, the reliability of each storey is individually derived based on various probable damage levels for the lateral-load resisting members. Then, the seismic reliability of the frame is globally obtained by combining the reliability of each storey for different damage levels in the lateral load-resisting subsystems. The results indicate significant impact of this type of bracing system on improvement of the performance level and load-carrying capacity of the frames along with reduction of the lateral displacements. It is shown that application of the vertical links can reduce the maximum inter-storey drifts by at least 60%, while it leads to at most 17% increase in the base shear. All retrofitted frames exhibited a performance level higher than the Life Safety (LS) when subjected to the DBE hazard level records (earthquakes with return period of 475 years). At the same level of earthquake intensity, in the cases when the drift corresponding to the LS performance level is used as the target, the reliability of the retrofitted frames was improved by more than 90% compared to the original frames for all damage states developed in the vertical links
Power demand control scenarios for smart grid applications with finite number of appliances
In this paper we propose novel and more realistic analytical models for the determination of the peak demand under four power demand control scenarios. Each scenario considers a finite number of appliances installed in a residential area, with diverse power demands and different arrival rates of power requests. We develop recursive formulas for the efficient calculation of the peak demand under each scenario, which take into account the finite population of the appliances. Moreover, we associate each scenario with a proper real-time pricing process in order to derive the social welfare. The proposed analysis is validated through simulations. Moreover, the performance evaluation of the proposed formulas reveals that the absence of the assumption of finite number of appliances could lead to serious peak-demand over-estimations.Grant numbers : This work has been funded by the project of the Catalan Government 2014-SGR-1551
Adaptive access and rate control of CSMA for energy, rate and delay optimization
In this article, we present a cross-layer adaptive algorithm that dynamically maximizes the average utility function. A per stage utility function is defined for each link of a carrier sense multiple access-based wireless network as a weighted concave function of energy consumption, smoothed rate, and smoothed queue size. Hence, by selecting weights we can control the trade-off among them. Using dynamic programming, the utility function is maximized by dynamically adapting channel access, modulation, and coding according to the queue size and quality of the time-varying channel. We show that the optimal transmission policy has a threshold structure versus the channel state where the optimal decision is to transmit when the wireless channel state is better than a threshold. We also provide a queue management scheme where arrival rate is controlled based on the link state. Numerical results show characteristics of the proposed adaptation scheme and highlight the trade-off among energy consumption, smoothed data rate, and link delay. This study was supported in part by the Spanish Government, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), under projects COMONSENS (CSD2008-00010, CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 program) and COSIMA (TEC2010-19545-C04-03), in part by Iran Telecommunication Research Center under contract 6947/500, and in part by Iran National Science Foundation under grant number 87041174.
