    Homeownership as a Sign of Immigrants\u27 Consumer Acculturation: The Role of Region of Origin

    One of the limitations highlighted by the consumer acculturation literature is the lack of empirical research to identify better constructs or indicators of consumer acculturation. In this article, the use of homeownership by immigrants in the host society is proposed as an indicator of advanced consumer acculturation. The decision to own a home by a minority group, such as immigrants, represents a key landmark in the process of adaptation to the new culture and a commitment with the host country\u27s values and culture. The empirical case used is the immigrant population of Spain. The sharp rise in its foreign-born population during the last decade and the significantly higher homeownership rates of natives in comparison with other countries makes the Spanish scenario a relevant case study. The results obtained show homeownership is linked to features associated with highly acculturated consumers. Moreover, the analysis conducted reveals important differences in the way immigrants from different origins advance in their consumer acculturation processes and suggest distinct approaches when marketing to these groups

    Characterisation of the National Network of Silos and Granaries in Castilla y León, Spain: A Case Study

    [EN] In 1995, Spain’s National Network of Silos and Granaries was divided into a basic network and a secondary network. Of the total storage units identified, 541 are vertical units or silos forming part of the secondary network. Unlike the silos of the basic network, many of the secondary network silos, which were primarily reception units sited near the areas where the grain was grown, have been repurposed. This article describes a methodology developed to inventory silos based on their general features, construction and technological facilities, and its application to the 123 silos in the secondary network in the Spanish region of Castilla y León. The exercise was conducted in conjunction with a socioeconomic analysis of the communities where the silos are located. All the silos studied are located in the most productive areas and close to farms, have small storage capacities and include all but one silo typology, the transition macro-silo. Some are still used for grain storage, whilst others have been converted into multi-purpose warehouses, gymnasiums, community centres or other specialised facilities. Ideas for silo repurposing implemented in other regions of Spain and other countries might well be applied in Castilla y León. In addition, this methodology has proved useful to identify proposals that are viable in the more highly populated communities.S

    A Consistent Study of the the Low Energy Baryon Spectrum and the Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction within the Chiral Quark Model

    By solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the three-quark system in the hyperspherical harmonic approach, we have studied the low energy part of the nucleon and Δ\Delta spectra using a quark-quark interaction which reproduces the nucleon-nucleon phenomenology. The quark-quark hamiltonian considered includes, besides the usual one-gluon exchange, pion and sigma exchanges generated by the chiral symmetry breaking. The baryonic spectrum obtained is reasonable and the resulting wave function gives consistency to the ansatz used in the two baryon system.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

    Proteomics of Plant Pathogenic Fungi

    Plant pathogenic fungi cause important yield losses in crops. In order to develop efficient and environmental friendly crop protection strategies, molecular studies of the fungal biological cycle, virulence factors, and interaction with its host are necessary. For that reason, several approaches have been performed using both classical genetic, cell biology, and biochemistry and the modern, holistic, and high-throughput, omic techniques. This work briefly overviews the tools available for studying Plant Pathogenic Fungi and is amply focused on MS-based Proteomics analysis, based on original papers published up to December 2009. At a methodological level, different steps in a proteomic workflow experiment are discussed. Separate sections are devoted to fungal descriptive (intracellular, subcellular, extracellular) and differential expression proteomics and interactomics. From the work published we can conclude that Proteomics, in combination with other techniques, constitutes a powerful tool for providing important information about pathogenicity and virulence factors, thus opening up new possibilities for crop disease diagnosis and crop protection

    El origen de la publicación de este volumen monográfico sobre teoría arqueológica surgió, como ocurre en muchas otras circunstancias de la vida, de una casualidad. Cierto día llegó a la revista un artículo bastante “raro” que el consejo de redacción consideró que, ni por el tema ni por el contexto, encajaba con la línea actual de Complutum. Es decir, el trabajo no se parecía en nada a lo que veníamos publicando en los últimos años. Por otro lado, determinados hechos recientes aconsejaban a los más atrevidos dentro de la Redacción tener un cuidado especial con lo que finalmente veía la luz en sus páginas. Ahora mismo ya no recordamos a quién se le ocurrió que una forma de aprovechar el trabajo, que por supuesto a los tres nos parecía interesante, podría ser publicarlo junto con otros de su misma o parecida cuerda.Peer Reviewe

    Se presenta una técnica de cálculo plástico incremental específica para el modelo estructural lámina plegada, cuya eficiencia se intenta cuantificar en comparación con otros procedimientos de cálculo plástico de estructuras. El complejo problema tridimensional que aparece implícito en este tipo de estructuras se ha reducido a dos análisis monodimensionales más sencillos -1ongitudinal y transversal a los que se han aplicado procedimientos típicos de cálculo plástico de estructuras de barras. Se ha estudiado el modelo en una serie de ejemplos prácticos que han corroborado la validez del mismo, al tiempo que han mostrado las extraordinarias posibilidades de aplicación a situaciones reales de gran interés en la ingeniería

    Electrical conductivity of metal (hydr)oxide–activated carbon composites under compression. A comparison study

    [EN]From a granular commercial activated carbon (AC) and six metal (hydr)oxide precursors, including Al(NO3)3, Fe(NO3)3, SnCl2, TiO2, Na2WO4 and Zn(NO3)2, a broadly varied series of metal (hydr)oxideeAC composites were prepared by wet impregnation and subsequent oven-drying at 120 C. Here, the electrical conductivity of the resulting products was studied under moderate compression. The influence of the applied pressure, sample volume, mechanical work, and density of the hybrid materials was thoroughly investigated. The dc electrical conductivity of the compressed samples was measured at room temperature by the four-probe method. Compaction assays show that the mechanical properties of the composites are largely determined by the carbon matrix. Both the decrease in volume and the increase in density under compression were very small and only significant at pressures lower than 100 kPa for AC and most composites. By contrast, the bulk electrical conductivity of the hybrid materials was strongly influenced by the nature, content and intrinsic conductivity of the supported metal phases, which act as insulating thin layers thereby hindering the effective electron transport between AC cores of neighbouring sample particles in contact under compression. Conductivity values for the composites were lower than for the raw AC, all of them falling in the range of typical semiconductor materials. The patterns of variation of the electrical conductivity with pressure and mechanical work were slightly similar, thus suggesting the predominance of the pressure effects rather than the volume one
