    First-principles DFT insights into the structural, elastic, and optoelectronic properties of α and β-ZnP2: implications for photovoltaic applications

    Binary II–V semiconductors are highly optically active materials, possess high intrinsic mechanical and chemical durability, and have electronic properties ideal for optoelectronic applications. Among them, zinc diphosphide (ZnP2) is a promising earth-abundant absorber material for solar energy conversion. We have investigated the structural, mechanical, and optoelectronic properties of both the tetragonal (α) and monoclinic (β) phases of ZnP2 using standard, Hubbard-corrected and screened hybrid density functional theory methods. Through the analysis of bond character, band gap nature, and absorption spectra, we show that there exist two polymorphs of the β phase (denoted as β1 and β2) with distinct differences in the photovoltaic potential. While β1 exhibits the characteristics of metallic compounds, β2 is a semiconductor with predicted thin-film photovoltaic absorbing efficiency of almost 10%. The α phase is anticipated to be an indirect gap material with a calculated efficiency limited to only 1%. We have also analysed and gained insights into the electron localization function, projected density of states and projected crystal orbital Hamilton populations for the analogue bonds between the α and β-ZnP2. In light of these calculations, a number of previous discrepancies have been solved and a solid ground for future employment of zinc diphosphides in photovoltaics has been established

    Stupanj mineralizacije cakline prvog kutnjaka donje čeljusti jelena običnog (Cervus elaphus L.) određivan je primjenom backscattered electron (BSE) testa i računalne denzitometrije. Prikupljeno je ukupno 60 donjih čeljusti odstrijeljenih jelena, ljubaznošću djelatnika Hrvatskih šuma d.o.o., Uprave šuma osijek, podružnice Tikveš. Primjenom računalne denzitometrije na presjecima i intaktnim kutnjacima s primjetnim prekomjernim trošenjem (N=4) utvrđena je viša relativna optička gustoća (roD) u odnosu na kontrolni kutnjak. rezultati dobiveni promatranjem intaktnog zuba odstupaju od onih dobivenih na presjeku zuba te time potvrđuju veću osjetljivost metode pri radu na presjeku zuba. BSE metoda je isključila znatnija odstupanja u mineralizaciji cakline unutar pojedinog grla. Na temelju rezultata može se zaključiti da smanjena mineralizacija cakline sudjeluje u nastanku prekomjernog trošenja M1, a ona može biti uzrokovana individualnim razlikama te nekim sistemskim i genskim bolestima

    Bioimmunological activities of Candida glabrata cellular mannan

    Candida glabrata is a second most common human opportunistic pathogen which causes superficial but also life-threatening systemic candidiasis. According to the localization of mannans and mannoproteins in the outermost layer of the cell wall, mannan detection could be one of the first steps in the cell recognition of Candida cells by the host innate immune system. Mannans from the cell wall provide important immunomodulatory activities, compromising stimulation of cytokine production, induction of dendritic cells maturation and T-cell immunity. The model of DCs represents a promising tool to study immunomodulatory interventions throughout the vaccine development. Activated DCs induce, activate and polarize T-cell responses by expression of distinct maturation markers and cytokines regulating the adaptive immune responses. In addition, they are uniquely adept at decoding the fungus-associated information and translate it in qualitatively different T helper responses. We find out, that C. glabrata mannan is able to induce proliferation of splenocytes and to increase the production of TNF-α and IL-4. Next, increased the expression of co-stimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86 and the proportion of CD4+CD25+ and CD4+CD28+ T cells during in vitro stimulation of splenocytes

    Segmentation and supervised classification of image objects in Epo doping-control

    Abstract A software system Gel Analysis System for Epo (GASepo) has been developed within an international WADA project. As recent WADA criteria of rEpo positivity are based on identification of each relevant object (band) in Epo images, development of suitable methods of image segmentation and object classification were needed for the GASepo system. In the paper we address two particular problems: segmentation of disrupted bands and classification of the segmented objects into three or two classes. A novel band projection operator is based on convenient object merging measures and their discrimination analysis using specifically generated training set of segmented objects. A weighted ranks classification method is proposed, which is new in the field of image classification. It is based on ranks of the values of a specific criterial function.     The Giant Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) as a modern analog for fossil ostreoids: Isotopic (Ca, O, C) and elemental (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Mn/Ca) proxies

    Modern analogs are an essential part of palaeoclimate studies, because they provide the basis for the understanding of geochemical signatures of fossils. Ostreoids are common in many sedimentary sequences and because of their fast growth, high temporal resolution sampling of past seasonal variability is possible. Here, two shell structures of modern Giant Pacific Oysters (Crassostrea gigas), the chalky substance and foliate layers, have been sampled for trace element distributions (Mg, Sr, Mn) and stable isotope variability (C, O, Ca). Oxygen isotopes exhibit a clear seasonal signature. Mean carbon isotope values of different oysters agree within 0.1‰, but ontogenic variability is complicated by shell growth patterns and potential small vital effects. The calcium isotope ratios are found to be constant throughout ontogeny within analytical precision at a value of δ44/40Ca = 0.68 ± 0.16‰ (2 sd) SRM–915a which is consistent with other bivalve species. Calcium isotope ratios in oyster shell material might thus be a possible proxy for palaeo seawater calcium isotope ratios. Element/Ca ratios are significantly higher in the chalky substance than in the foliate layers and especially high Sr/Ca and Mn/Ca ratios are observed for the first growth season of the oysters. Mg/Ca ratios in the chalky substance show a negative correlation with δ18O values, compatible with a temperature dependence, whereas this correlation is absent in the foliate layers. Seasonal changes of Sr/Ca are controlled by metabolic processes, whereas for Mn/Ca an additional environmental control is evident

    Antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of the lichens Cladonia furcata, Lecanora atra and Lecanora muralis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of the acetone extracts of the lichens <it>Cladonia furcata, Lecanora atra </it>and <it>Lecanora muralis</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Antioxidant activity was evaluated by five separate methods: free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, reducing power, determination of total phenolic compounds and determination of total flavonoid content. The antimicrobial activity was estimated by determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration by the broth microdilution method against six species of bacteria and ten species of fungi. Anticancer activity was tested against FemX (human melanoma) and LS174 (human colon carcinoma) cell lines using MTT method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the lichens tested, <it>Lecanora atra </it>had largest free radical scavenging activity (94.7% inhibition), which was greater than the standard antioxidants. Moreover, the tested extracts had effective reducing power and superoxide anion radical scavenging. The strong relationships between total phenolic and flavonoid contents and the antioxidant effect of tested extracts were observed. Extract of <it>Cladonia furcata </it>was the most active antimicrobial agent with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging from 0.78 to 25 mg/mL. All extracts were found to be strong anticancer activity toward both cell lines with IC<sub>50 </sub>values ranging from 8.51 to 40.22 μg/mL.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study shows that tested lichen extracts demonstrated a strong antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer effects. That suggest that lichens may be used as as possible natural antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer agents to control various human, animal and plant diseases.</p
