The Effect of Species Diversity and Shade on Milkweed Growth and Cardenolide Concentration

Get PDF
Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) rely upon milkweed plants for survival, as it is the only plant upon which female monarchs oviposit and it is the sole food supply for monarch larvae. Additionally, cardenolide, a defense toxin within milkweed tissue, is sequestered by monarchs, making them unpalatable to most predators. Eastern and Western monarch populations in the United States are in sharp decline, in part due to the growing scarcity of milkweed, and reestablishing milkweed habitat is crucial to the monarch’s long-term survival. This study aimed to study the effects of plant species diversity and shade on the growth and cardenolide content of two species of milkweed common in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Milkweed plants were grown outdoors over three summers at the University of Portland, under varying levels of plant species diversity and shade. Four growth measurements and cardenolide concentration were analyzed. Species diversity affected several growth measurements but not cardenolide concentration. Medium shade conditions resulted in increases in three growth measurements and cardenolide concentration compared to low and high shade conditions. The results suggest PNW milkweed can grow under more diverse conditions than previously known, which may be useful information for reestablishment of milkweed habitat supporting the highly imperiled Western monarch population

In Argentina, migratory processes have had different levels of legitimacy depending on the migrants’ countries of origin and on official and academic political discourses, which permeated public opinion through the media. The perspectives that were historically built around the “other” migrants have been reproduced and updated in various areas. We address the perspectives and tensions regarding the nationality of migrants expressed by health personnel and female migrant users of Primary Health Care Centers (CAPS) in the Municipality of José C. Paz, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina to learn how they perceive their interactions and health care. From this, we seek to unravel the logic/ s by which “differences” of nationality are marked or unmarked in different contexts. To do so, we carry out an exploratory cross-sectional and qualitative study that integrates the analysis of secondary sources with the production of primary sources (from participant observation and semi-structured interviews).

Dyadic stress and coping is a significant subject of study in the field of psychology by the negative consequences on the physical and mental health of spouses. However, this topic is absent in the psychological literature of Puerto Rico. This study proposes to analyze the causes, the coping strategies and their effect on the marital relationship from the theoretical model of Bodenmann. A questionnaire was applied to 311 married persons selected by availability. The questionnaire included a mixed format of questions covering issues related to the causes of stress, the effect of marital stress, and coping strategies among others. The economic situation was identified to be among the main causes of stress in marriage, where it is coped with in various ways at the individual level. It is recognized that it is vital to communicate this experience in the couple to maintain the welfare of the relationship. Also, stress is an element that can impair the quality of marriage and consequently lead to its dissolution. Future studies that study stress in relation to conflict and marital satisfaction are recommended.

Fog computing for sustainable smart cities: a survey

Get PDF
The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to connect billions of smart objects to the Internet, which can bring a promising future to smart cities. These objects are expected to generate large amounts of data and send the data to the cloud for further processing, specially for knowledge discovery, in order that appropriate actions can be taken. However, in reality sensing all possible data items captured by a smart object and then sending the complete captured data to the cloud is less useful. Further, such an approach would also lead to resource wastage (e.g. network, storage, etc.). The Fog (Edge) computing paradigm has been proposed to counterpart the weakness by pushing processes of knowledge discovery using data analytics to the edges. However, edge devices have limited computational capabilities. Due to inherited strengths and weaknesses, neither Cloud computing nor Fog computing paradigm addresses these challenges alone. Therefore, both paradigms need to work together in order to build an sustainable IoT infrastructure for smart cities. In this paper, we review existing approaches that have been proposed to tackle the challenges in the Fog computing domain. Specifically, we describe several inspiring use case scenarios of Fog computing, identify ten key characteristics and common features of Fog computing, and compare more than 30 existing research efforts in this domain. Based on our review, we further identify several major functionalities that ideal Fog computing platforms should support and a number of open challenges towards implementing them, so as to shed light on future research directions on realizing Fog computing for building sustainable smart cities

Possible Association of Two Stellar Bowshocks with Unidentified Fermi Sources

The bowshocks of runaway stars had been theoretically proposed as gamma-ray sources. However, this hypothesis has not been confirmed by observations to date. In this paper, we present two runaway stars (λ Cep and LS 2355) whose bowshocks are coincident with the unidentified Fermi gamma-ray sources 3FLG J2210.1+5925 and 3FGL J1128.7-6232, respectively. After performing a cross-correlation between different catalogs at distinct wavelengths, we found that these bowshocks are the most peculiar objects in the Fermi position ellipses. Then we computed the inverse Compton emission and fitted the Fermi data in order to test the viability of both runaway stars as potential counterparts of the two high-energy sources. We obtained very reasonable values for the fitted parameters of both stars. We also evaluated the possibility for the source 3FGL J1128.7-6232, which is positionally coincident with a H II region, to be the result of background cosmic-ray protons interacting with the matter of the cloud, as well as the probability of a pure chance association. We conclude that the gamma rays from these Fermi sources might be produced in the bowshocks of the considered runaway stars. In such a case, these would be the first sources of this class ever detected at gamma rays.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica
