    The RS CVn Binary HD 155555: A Comparative Study of the Atmospheres for the Two Component Stars

    We present GHRS/HST observations of the RS CVn binary system HD 155555. Several key UV emission lines (Fe XXI, Si IV, O V, C IV) have been analyzed to provide information about the heating rate throughout the atmosphere from the chromosphere to the corona. We show that both the G and K components reveal features of a chromosphere, transition region and corona. The emission measure distribution as a function of temperature for both components is derived and compared with the RS Cvn system, HR 1099, and the Sun. The transition region and coronal lines of both stars show nonthermal broadenings of approx. 20-30 km/s. Possible physical implications for coronal heating mechanisms are discussed

    Far-Infrared Excitations below the Kohn Mode: Internal Motion in a Quantum Dot

    We have investigated the far-infrared response of quantum dots in modulation doped GaAs heterostructures. We observe novel modes at frequencies below the center-of-mass Kohn mode. Comparison with Hartree-RPA calculations show that these modes arise from the flattened potential in our field-effect confined quantum dots. They reflect pronounced relative motion of the charge density with respect to the center-of-mass.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX with integrated 6 PostScript figure

    Geostatistical evaluation of integrated marsh management impact on mosquito vectors using before-after-control-impact (BACI) design

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In many parts of the world, salt marshes play a key ecological role as the interface between the marine and the terrestrial environments. Salt marshes are also exceedingly important for public health as larval habitat for mosquitoes that are vectors of disease and significant biting pests. Although grid ditching and pesticides have been effective in salt marsh mosquito control, marsh degradation and other environmental considerations compel a different approach. Targeted habitat modification and biological control methods known as Open Marsh Water Management (OMWM) had been proposed as a viable alternative to marsh-wide physical alterations and chemical control. However, traditional larval sampling techniques may not adequately assess the impacts of marsh management on mosquito larvae. To assess the effectiveness of integrated OMWM and marsh restoration techniques for mosquito control, we analyzed the results of a 5-year OMWM/marsh restoration project to determine changes in mosquito larval production using GIS and geostatistical methods.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The following parameters were evaluated using "Before-After-Control-Impact" (BACI) design: frequency and geographic extent of larval production, intensity of larval production, changes in larval habitat, and number of larvicide applications. The analyses were performed using Moran's I, Getis-Ord, and Spatial Scan statistics on aggregated before and after data as well as data collected over time. This allowed comparison of control and treatment areas to identify changes attributable to the OMWM/marsh restoration modifications.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The frequency of finding mosquito larvae in the treatment areas was reduced by 70% resulting in a loss of spatial larval clusters compared to those found in the control areas. This effect was observed directly following OMWM treatment and remained significant throughout the study period. The greatly reduced frequency of finding larvae in the treatment areas led to a significant decrease (~44%) in the number of times when the larviciding threshold was reached. This reduction, in turn, resulted in a significant decrease (~74%) in the number of larvicide applications in the treatment areas post-project. The remaining larval habitat in the treatment areas had a different geographic distribution and was largely confined to the restored marsh surface (i.e. filled-in mosquito ditches); however only ~21% of the restored marsh surface supported mosquito production.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The geostatistical analysis showed that OMWM demonstrated considerable potential for effective mosquito control and compatibility with other natural resource management goals such as restoration, wildlife habitat enhancement, and invasive species abatement. GPS and GIS tools are invaluable for large scale project design, data collection, and data analysis, with geostatistical methods serving as an alternative or a supplement to the conventional inference statistics in evaluating the project outcome.</p

    Laterally coupled and field-induced quantum Hall systems

    A quantum Hall system which is divided into two laterally coupled subsystems by means of a tunneling barrier exhibits a complex Landau level dispersion. Magnetotunneling spectroscopy is employed to investigate the small energy gaps which separate subsequent Landau bands. The control on the Fermi level permits to trace the anticrossings for varying magnetic fields. The band structure calculation predicts a magnetic shift of the band gaps on the scale of the cyclotron energy. This effect is confirmed experimentally by a displacement of the conductance peaks on the axis of the filling factor. Tunneling centers within the barrier are responsible for quantum interferences between opposite edge channels. Due to the disorder potential, the corresponding Aharonov-Bohm interferometers generate additional long-period and irregular conductance features. In the regime of strong localization, conductance fluctuations occur at small magnetic fields before the onset of the regular Landau oscillations. The Landau dispersion is obtained by a dedicated algorithm which solves the Schroedinger equation exactly for a single electron residing in a quantum Hall system with an arbitrary unidirectional, threefold staircase potential.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 1 table; v2: explanation added in section 2, some minor change

    Inhibition of the hERG Potassium Channel by a Methanesulphonate-Free E-4031 Analogue

    hERG (human Ether-à-go-go Related Gene)-encoded potassium channels underlie the cardiac rapid delayed rectifier (IKr) potassium current, which is a major target for antiarrhythmic agents and diverse non-cardiac drugs linked to the drug-induced form of long QT syndrome. E-4031 is a high potency hERG channel inhibitor from the methanesulphonanilide drug family. This study utilized a methanesulphonate-lacking E-4031 analogue, “E-4031-17”, to evaluate the role of the methanesulphonamide group in E-4031 inhibition of hERG. Whole-cell patch-clamp measurements of the hERG current (IhERG) were made at physiological temperature from HEK 293 cells expressing wild-type (WT) and mutant hERG constructs. For E-4031, WT IhERG was inhibited by a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 15.8 nM, whilst the comparable value for E-4031-17 was 40.3 nM. Both compounds exhibited voltage- and time-dependent inhibition, but they differed in their response to successive applications of a long (10 s) depolarisation protocol, consistent with greater dissociation of E-4031-17 than the parent compound between applied commands. Voltage-dependent inactivation was left-ward voltage shifted for E-4031 but not for E-4031-17; however, inhibition by both compounds was strongly reduced by attenuated-inactivation mutations. Mutations of S6 and S5 aromatic residues (F656V, Y652A, F557L) greatly attenuated actions of both drugs. The S624A mutation also reduced IhERG inhibition by both molecules. Overall, these results demonstrate that the lack of a methanesulphonate in E-4031-17 is not an impediment to high potency inhibition of IhERG

    Latino Parents\u27 Motivations for Involvement in Their Children\u27s Schooling: An Exploratory Study

    This study examines the ability of a theoretical model of the parental involvement process to predict Latino parents\u27 involvement in their children\u27s schooling. A sample of Latino parents (N = 147) of grade 1 through 6 children in a large urban public school district in the southeastern United States responded to surveys assessing model-based predictors of involvement (personal psychological beliefs, contextual motivators of involvement, perceived life-context variables), as well as levels of home- and school-based involvement. Home-based involvement was predicted by partnership-focused role construction (a personal psychological belief) and by specific invitations from the student (a contextual motivator of involvement). School-based involvement was predicted by specific invitations from the teacher (a contextual motivator) and by perceptions of time and energy for involvement (a life-context variable).     To understand the role of isospin effects on fragmentation due to the collisions of charge asymmetric nuclei, we have performed a complete systematical study using isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics model. Here simulations have been carried out for 124Xn+124Xn^{124}X_{n}+ ^{124}X_{n}, where n varies from 47 to 59 and for 40Ym+40Ym^{40}Y_{m}+ ^{40}Y_{m}, where m varies from 14 to 23. Our study shows that isospin dependent cross-section shows its influence on fragmentation in the collision of neutron rich nuclei
