Human disturbance is a common threat for species of conservation concern such as the Eleonora’s Falcon. This paper shows that the rise in tourist presence from 1992 to 2000 has not affected the overall number of breeding pairs or their productivity in a small archipelago of the western Mediterranean (Columbretes Islands). However, the increasing tourist activity has coincided with a shift in the degree of occupancy on two islands within the archipelago, favouring that with a lower human presence close to colonies. Several conservation actions are reported and suggested, aimed at both testing and preventing the role of human presence as a factor influencing long–term colony persistence and growth.

A group of children and young people boarding at the Casa-Escuela Santiago Uno (a type of orphanage/Pious School) and students from different levels and areas of professional training, travelled to the South of Morocco to implement a development cooperation project entitled “Llenando Escuelas” (“Filling Schools”). The main aim was to empower the local population in educational and professional terms and basic services, paying special attention to the most disadvantaged population groups: women, children and young people. They used theoretical and practical knowledge they had acquired in the previous academic year: catering, manufacturing, gardening, welding, first aid, social integration, sociocultural animation, sports and circus activities. For two months they lived together in a school with their educators and together with local residents they helped refurbish the school, in addition to carrying out training, organizing leisure and free time activities and setting up and supplying a medical clinic. This was a service-learning experience in which an enriching socio-cultural exchange took place.

New combined PIC-MCC approach for fast simulation of a radio frequency discharge at low gas pressure

A new combined PIC-MCC approach is developed for accurate and fast simulation of a radio frequency discharge at low gas pressure and high density of plasma. Test calculations of transition between different modes of electron heating in a ccrf discharge in helium and argon show a good agreement with experimental data. We demonstrate high efficiency of the combined PIC-MCC algorithm, especially for the collisionless regime of electron heating.Comment: 6 paged, 8 figure

This paper is a postprint of a paper submitted to and accepted for publication in Electronics Letters and is subject to Institution of Engineering and Technology Copyright. The copy of record is available at the IET Digital Library.Empty substrate integrated waveguide (ESIW) is an improvement of the well-known substrate integrated waveguide. While maintaining the low cost, easy manufacturing, small size, and integration with other circuits in the same substrate, ESIW decreases the related losses by removing the dielectric substrate, thus rendering it more interesting for practical applications. A wide band transition has been already developed to connect ESIW to microstrip lines. Filters, couplers, and antennas have also been developed in ESIW. For multilevel configurations, where different ESIW devices are implemented in different stacked substrates, a transition is needed that connects ESIW lines in different substrate levels. A low reflection wideband transition is presented for connecting two stacked ESIW lines. This work was supported by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad, Spanish Goverment, under Research Projects TEC2013-47037-C05-3-R and TEC2013-47037-C05-1-R.Morro, JV.; Rodríguez Pérez, AM.; Belenguer Martínez, Á.; Esteban González, H.; Boria Esbert, VE. We present 7 cases of supracondylar fracture of the femur in patients with total knee arthroplaty. The purpose of this study was to asses the different options of treatment and their results at mid-term. Fractures were treated with an intramedular nail or with a Neufeld traction system followed by a Q.T.B. cast. The method of treatment depends on the grade of fracture displacement, period of time since the fracture and patient health. All o them reached similar level of activity like before the fracture

Hybrid mode matching and method of moments method for the full-wave analysis of arbitrarily shaped structures fed through canonical waveguides using only electric currents

    Get PDF
A new hybrid mode matching and method of moments formulation based only on electric currents is presented in this paper. The use of only one equivalent current allows the introduction of a new set of unknowns. The chosen new unknowns are the weights related to the scattered modes that emerge from the ports to the waveguides that feed the problem. Applying this new formulation, the matrices that must be inverted are smaller and the generalized scattering matrix can be obtained directly from the solution of the resulting system of equations, so that no additional projection is needed to obtain the scattering parameters, as happens with traditional approaches with two equivalent currents. As a result, certain efficiency improvement is obtained, as can be seen when this technique is applied to the solution of H plane problems in rectangular waveguid

In the last years a great number of substrate integrated circuits has been developed. These new circuits are a compromise between the advantages of classical waveguide technologies, such as high quality factor and low losses, and the advantages of planar circuits, such as low cost and easy compact integration. Although their quality factor and losses are better than for planar circuits, these characteristics are worse than in the case of waveguides, mainly due to the presence of the dielectric substrate. In order to improve the performance of the integrated circuits, a new methodology for manufacturing empty waveguides, without dielectric substrate, but at the same time completely integrated in a planar substrate has been recently proposed. A wide band transition with return losses greater than 20 dB in the whole bandwith of the waveguide allows the integration of the empty waveguide into the planar substrate, so that the waveguide can be directly accessed with a microstrip line. Therefore a microwave circuit integrated in a planar substrate, but at the same time with a very high quality factor (measured quality factor is 4.5 times higher than for the same filter in SIW) and very low losses was successfully achieved. In this work the performance of this new technology is tested through the simulation and measurement of high order filters (8 and 9 cavities filters).Belenguer Martínez, Á.; Esteban González, H.; Boria Esbert, VE.; Morro, JV.
