AbstractEssential thrombocythaemia is a rare pathology in adults and extremely rare in children, making it a diagnostic challenge for paediatricians. The challenge is greater when patients are asymptomatic, despite an incidental discovery of thrombocytosis. We report the case of extreme thrombocytosis found in an asymptomatic child of 3 years with no personal history or familial history. Study protocol started by ruling out laboratory errors, infectious disease, haemolytic anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia and autoimmune diseases. Bone marrow sample confirmed elevated megakaryocyte production, with other cell lines within normal ranges. Genetic analysis (including JAK2 mutation) was also negative, leading to a differential diagnosis of essential thrombocythaemia. Hydroxyurea (10mg/kg) and aspirin (5mg/kg) were prescribed. A moderate reduction in platelet count was achieved after 4 weeks of treatment

Pòster presentat al congrés "Understanding Human Diseases Through Metabolomics: Interactions Among the Genome, Proteome, Gut Microbiome and Nutrition", Metabolomics and Human Health, Gordon Research Conference (February 3 - 8, 2019 Ventura, CA, United States)Although metabolomics aims at the measurement of small molecules (metabolites) in a biological sample, this knowledge requires additional information on the related genetic variants, epigenetic regulators and environmental factors (diet, smoking, physical activity, etc.) in order to translate the knowledge into actionable therapeutic or preventive evidence for complex disease outcomes. We focused on serum bilirubin, a metabolite generated when heme oxygenase catalyzes the degradation of heme (Figure 1). This produces biliverdin, which is converted into bilirubin by biliverdinreductase. Bilirubin is further processed in hepatocytes, where unconjugated bilirubin is conjugated by uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase (UDP-GT) to a water-soluble form for excretion. For decades, increased serum bilirubin concentrations were considered a threatening sign of underlying liver disease and had been associated with neonatal jaundice. However, data from recent years show that bilirubin is a powerful antioxidant and suggest that slightly increased serum bilirubin concentrations are protective against oxidative stress-related diseases

Gas data of the Los Azufres geothermal field were analyzed using a method based on equilibrium of the Fischer- Tropsch (FT) reaction: CH4 + 2H2O = 4H2 +CO2 and on the combined pyrite-hematite-magnetite (HSH2) reactions: 5/4 H2 +3/2 FeS2 +3/4 Fe2O3 + 7/4 H2O = 3 H2S +Fe3O4 in order to estimate reservoir temperature and excess steam. The solution of equilibrium equations produces a grid (FT-HSH2). This method is suitable for reservoirs with relatively high H2S but low H2 and NH3 concentrations in the fluid as is the case of the Los Azufres well discharges. Reservoir temperature and reservoir excess steam values were estimated for initial and present conditions in representative wells of the field to study the evolution of fluids, because of exploitation and waste fluids reinjection. This method was very useful in estimating reservoir temperatures in vapor wells, while in two-phase wells it was found that as the well produces a smaller fraction of water, the reservoir temperature estimation agrees qualitatively with results from cationic or silica geothermometers. For liquid-dominated wells the reservoir temperature estimations agree with temperatures obtained from the well simulator WELFLO. This indicates that FT-HSH2 results provide the temperature of the fluid entering the well where the last equilibrium occurs. Results show a decrease in reservoir temperatures in the southern zone of the field where intensive reinjection takes place. With exploitation, it was also noted that the deep liquid phase in the reservoir is changing to two-phase increasing the reservoir steam fraction and the non-condensable gases in well discharges

An electrospun Polymer Composite with Fullerene-Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Exohedral Complexes can act as Memory Device

In this work, a novel electrospun conductive polymer nanocomposite made of polycaprolactone with an exohedral complex made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and fullerene C60 was prepared and characterized. The preparation was straightforward and the complexes self-assembled within the nanocomposite fibers. The nanocomposite showed electrical switching behavior due to charge accumulation of fullerene C60 upon electrical stimulation. Write-once read-many memory devices were fabricated by electrospinning a nanocomposite with 0.8%wt. fullerene C60 onto interdigitated coplanar electrodes. The device retained the ON state for more than 60 days and could be thermally reset, reprogrammed and erased with subsequent electrical and thermal cycling. Moreover, the electrical resistance of the device could be modulated by applying different programming voltage amplitudes and programming times, which revealed its adaptive behavior and potential application to neuromorphic systems.Comment: 41 pages, 16 figures, 4 table

Experimental results of developed tests in solid clay brick masonry specimens are reported. This masonry type is largely used to build the confined masonry walls in Chilpancingo City (Guerrero State, Mexico). Sixty eight tests of masonry specimens, prisms and walls, were developed. Mean values of compressive and shear strength design, elasticity and shear modulus and joint mortar adherence were measured. Additionally, stress-strain relationship of compressive prisms and walls were recorded. Comparison among experimental results and standardized values of Mexico City Code, normally used to the design process, shows a large difference for some of them.

Pòster presentat a EMBO - EMBL Symposia Multiomics to Mechanisms - Challenges in Data Integration. September (11th – 13th 2019 European Molecular Biology Laboratory. Heidelberg, Germany)Tobacco smoking (Figure 1) is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and appears to have a multiplicative interaction with the other major CVD risk factors (lipids, hypertension, diabetes and others present in the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Several omics have analyzed the separate effects of tobacco smoking on the genome, epigenome, transcriptome, metabolome, etc. However an integrated omics approach can help to better understand the crosstalk between tobacco smoking and the genome

Background and Objectives: Circadian rhythms have an important implication in numerous physiological and metabolic processes, including the sleep/wake cycle. Inter-individual differences in factors associated with circadian system may be due to gene differences in gene expression. Although several studies have analyzed the association between DNA polymorphisms and circadian variables, the influence on gene expression has been poorly analyzed. Our goal was to analyze the association of genetic variations in the clock genes and the gene expression level. Materials and Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study of 102 adults (50.9% women). RNA and DNA were isolated from blood and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and the main circadian clock genes were determined. Gene expression of CLOCK, PER1, and VRK2 genes was measured by Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The association between the DNA-SNPs and gene expression was analyzed at the gene level. In addition, a polygenic risk score (PRS), including all the significant SNPs related to gene expression, was created for each gene. Multivariable model analysis was performed. Results: Sex-specific differences were detected in PER1 expression, with these being higher in women (p = 0.034). No significant differences were detected in clock genes expression and lifestyle variables. We observed a significant association between the ARNTL-rs7924734, ARNTL-rs10832027, VRK2- rs2678902 SNPs, and CLOCK gene expression; the PER3-rs228642 and PER3-rs10127838 were related to PER1 expression, and the ARNTL-rs10832027, ARNTL-rs11022778, and MNTR1B-rs10830963 were associated with VRK2 gene expression (p < 0.05). The specific PRS created was significantly associated with each of the gene expressions analyzed (p < 0.001). Finally, sleep duration was associated with PER3-rs238666 (p = 0.008) and CLOCK-rs4580704 (p = 0.023). Conclusion: We detected significant associations between DNA-SNPs in the clock genes and their gene expression level in leukocytes and observed some differences in gene expression per sex. Moreover, we reported for the first time an association between clock gene polymorphisms and CLOCK, PER1, and VRK2 gene expression. These findings need further investigation
