Super star clusters and Supernovae in interacting LIRGs unmasked by NIR adaptive optics
We report on an on-going near-IR adaptive optics survey targeting interacting
luminous IR galaxies. High-spatial resolution NIR data are crucial to enable
interpretation of kinematic, dynamical and star formation (SF) properties of
these very dusty objects. Whole progenitor nuclei in the interactions can be
missed if only optical HST imaging is used. Here we specifically present the
latest results regarding core-collapse supernovae found within the highly
extincted nuclear regions of these galaxies. Direct detection and study of such
highly obscured CCSNe is crucial for revising the optically-derived SN rates
used for providing an independent measurement of the SF history of the
Universe. We also present thus-far the first NIR luminosity functions of super
star cluster (SSC) candidates. The LFs can then be used to constrain the
formation and evolution of SSCs via constraints based on initial mass functions
and cluster disruption models.Comment: 6 pages. To appear in proceedings of 'Galaxies and their Masks'

Peruskouluikäisen kitaransoiton motivaatioon vaikuttavat tekijät
Tiivistelmä. Tämä kandidaatintutkielma käsittelee peruskouluikäisen kitaransoiton motivaatioon liittyviä tekijöitä. Valitsin tämän aiheen, koska toimin kitaransoiton opettajana, ja iso osa oppilaistani on peruskoulussa. Toteutin tämän tutkielman kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena ja rajasin tutkimuksen kohteen peruskouluikäisiin kitaraa soittaviin lapsiin.
Tutkimuskysymykseni on: ”Mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat peruskouluikäisen lapsen kitaransoiton motivaatioon?”
Onnistuin vastaamaan tutkimuskysymykseen erityisesti kitaransoiton haasteita tutkimalla. Pystyin myös yhdistämään itsemääräämisteorian kolme perustarvetta kitaransoittoon. Haluan tutkia aihetta myös jatkossa, koska kitaransoiton motivaatioon liittyviä tarkkoja faktoja oli hankala löytää. Kitaransoitto on tuonut itselleni paljon iloa ja haluan, että mahdollisimman monet nuoret pääsevät kokemaan saman soittamisen tuoman ilon
Terminating ley with mid-summer bare fallow controls Elymus repens
The results of this study suggest that mid-summer bare fallow is a relative effective way to reduce the amount of Elymus repens when terminating ley. Early started stubble cultivation is also less sensitive to moist weather, leaving more time for exhausting the rhizome reserves of E. repens. Stubble cultivation and catch crop do increase the costs but not as much as bare fallowing for the whole summer would do. Additionally, mid summer bare fallow allows harvesting one forage yield prior to bare fallowing
Adaptive Optics Discovery of Supernova 2004ip in the Nuclear Regions of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 18293-3413
We report a supernova discovery in Ks-band images from the NAOS CONICA
adaptive optics (AO) system on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The images
were obtained as part of a near-infrared search for highly-obscured supernovae
in the nuclear regions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. SN
2004ip is located within a circumnuclear starburst at 1.4 arcsec (or 500 pc)
projected distance from the K-band nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS
18293-3413. The supernova luminosity and light curve are consistent with a
core-collapse event suffering from a host galaxy extinction of up to about 40
magnitudes in V-band which is as expected for a circumnuclear starburst
environment. This is the first supernova to be discovered making use of AO
correction and demonstrates the potential of the current 8-meter class
telescopes equipped with AO in discovering supernovae from the innermost
nuclear regions of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, ApJ Letters (accepted
Paleoproterotsooisten arclogiittien jäljillä - Muutos 1.88 Ga kalkkialkalisesta magmatismista 1.86 Ga korkean Nb:n ja adakiitti-tyyppiseen magmatismiin Fennoskandian kilven keskiosissa
Arclogites, i.e., lower crustal gamet-pyroxenite cumulates, are suggested to play an important role in controlling magma differentiation in modem continental arcs. Until now, arclogite-related magmatism has only been described from the Phanerozoic Era. The Svecofennian orogen in the central Fennoscandian Shield hosts a rare association of 1.86 Ga igneous rocks geochemically distinct from the surrounding and much more abundant 1.90-1.87 Ga subduction-related talc-alkaline magmatism. The 1.86 Ga magmatic rocks are divided into three groups: 1) high-Nb gabbros (HNB) which are enriched in Fe2O3T, TiO2, P2O5, F. LILE, and HFSE (especially Nb: 18.9-44 ppm), show positive initial epsilon(Nd) value, and near-chondritic but variable initial zircon epsilon(Hf) values; 2) high-Mg gabbros (HMG) which are characterised by high MgO, CaO, Cr and Ni contents, slight enrichment in LILE, positive epsilon(Hf), and positive but variable zircon epsilon(Hf) values; 3) adakite-like rocks showing high Al2O3 and Na2O contents, slight enrichment in LILE, relative depletion in some HFSE, positive CNd value, and chondritic to negative zircon epsilon(Nd) values. The three groups yield zircon U-Pb ages of similar to 1.86 Ga and exhibit undeformed textures in contrast to the surrounding supracrustal rocks metamorphosed at similar to 1.88 Ga. The ages and compositions are dearly different from the adjacent 1.90-1.87 Ga arc-related igneous rocks suggesting a distinct origin. Despite similar ages and close spatial relationship, separate sources are required for each of the different 1.86 Ga rock groups. Trace element modelling of partial melting suggests that arclogites, with compositions similar to pyroxenite xenoliths found in the kimberlite pipes of eastern Finland, are the source for the HNB rocks. In contrast, subduction-modified mantle peridotite is the source for the HMG rocks, and a mafic lower crustal source is suggested for the adakite-like rocks. The following geodynamic model is suggested: (rutile-bearing) arclogite formation at 1.90-1.87 Ga followed by arclogite delamination and partial melting during extension of the thickened Svecofennian crust at 1.86 Ga. Patients hospitalized abroad as importers of multiresistant bacteria - a cross-sectional study
Objectives: The pandemic spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria poses a threat to healthcare worldwide, with highest prevalence in indigent regions of the (sub) tropics. As hospitalization constitutes a major risk factor for colonization, infection control management in low-prevalence countries urgently needs background data on patients hospitalized abroad. Methods: We collected data on 1122 patients who, after hospitalization abroad, were treated at the Helsinki University Hospital between 2010 and 2013. They were screened for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE), vancomycin-resistant enterococci, carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and multiresistant Acinetobacter baumannii. Risk factors for colonization were explored by multivariate analysis. Results: MDR colonization rates were higher for those hospitalized in the (sub) tropics (55%; 208/377) compared with temperate zones (17%; 125/745). For ESBL-PE the percentages were 50% (190/377) versus 12% (92/745), CPE 3.2% (12/377) versus 0.4% (3/745) and MRSA 6.6% (25/377) versus 2.4% (18/745). Colonization rates proved highest in those returning from South Asia (77.6%; 38/49), followed by those having visited Latin America (60%; 9/16), Africa (60%; 15/25) and East and Southeast Asia (52.5%; 94/179). Destination, interhospital transfer, short time interval to hospitalization, young age, surgical intervention, residence abroad, visiting friends and relatives, and antimicrobial use proved independent risk factors for colonization. Conclusions: Post-hospitalization colonization rates proved higher in the (sub) tropics than elsewhere; 11% (38/333) of carriers developed an MDR infection. We identified several independent risk factors for contracting MDR bacteria. The data provide a basis for infection control guidelines in low-prevalence countries (C) 2017 The Author(s). ”Kitara — ryhmässä kivempaa vai yksin hyödyllisempää?”:konservatoriosta valmistuneiden muusikoiden ja konservatorio-opettajien kokemuksiasähkökitaran yksilö-ja ryhmäopetuksen hyödyntämisestä
Tiivistelmä. Pro gradu -tutkielmamme käsittelee konservatoriosta valmistuneiden muusikoiden ja konservatorio-opettajien kokemuksia sähkökitaran yksilö- ja ryhmäopetuksen hyödyntämisestä. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää tutkittavien kokemuksia molempien opetusmuotojen hyödyistä ja haasteista, sekä miten niitä on konservatorioissa hyödynnetty.
Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys koostuu kuudesta luvusta.
Tutkielma on fenomenografinen tutkimus, jonka aineisto on kerätty harkinnanvaraisella otannalla. Aineisto koostuu viidestä (N=5) tutkittavasta, joista kolme on konservatoriosta sähkökitara pääinstrumenttinaan valmistuneita muusikoita ja kaksi on konservatorio-opettajia. Kaikilla haastateltavilla on kokemusta yksilö- ja ryhmäopetuksen hyödyntämisestä konservatorio-opinnoissa. Aineisto on analysoitu fenomenografisella analyysillä.
This paper presents new J and Ks data obtained from observations conducted at
the ESO 3.5m New Technology Telescope using the SOFI camera. These data were
taken as part of the ESO Imaging Survey Deep Public Survey (DPS) and
significantly extend the earlier optical/infrared EIS-DEEP survey presented in
a previous paper. The DPS-IR survey comprises two observing strategies: shallow
Ks observations providing nearly full coverage of pointings with complementary
multi-band optical data and deeper J and Ks observations of the central parts
of these fields. The DPS-IR survey provides a coverage of roughly 2.1 square
degrees in Ks with 0.63 square degrees to fainter magnitudes and also covered
in J, over three independent regions of the sky. The goal of the present paper
is to describe the observations, the data reduction procedures, and to present
the final survey products. The astrometric solution with an estimated accuracy
of <0.15" is based on the USNO catalog. The final stacked images presented here
number 89 and 272, in J and Ks, respectively, the latter reflecting the larger
surveyed area. The J and Ks images were taken with a median seeing of 0.77" and
0.8". The images reach a median 5sigma limiting magnitude of J_AB~23.06 in an
aperture of 2", while the corresponding limiting magnitude in Ks_AB is ~21.41
and ~22.16 mag for the shallow and deep strategies. Overall, the observed
limiting magnitudes are consistent with those originally proposed. The quality
of the data has been assessed by comparing the measured magnitude of sources at
the bright end directly with those reported by the 2MASS survey and at the
faint end by comparing the counts of galaxies and stars with those of other
surveys to comparable depth and to model predictions. The final science-grade
catalogs and images are available at CDS.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 14 pages, 8 figures, a full
