AbstractData visualization is the studies that visually present abstracted information in certain schematic forms, which also include their own attributes and variables. Basic aim of the data visualization is to convey the information with graphical methods in a more clear and effective way. As presenting the data graphically, data visualization also provides a new and different point of view about incidents and correlations of the incidents. Human mind can perceive visual information transfer in a short period, much more effective and permanent way in comparison to written or verbal information transfer. Data visualization, frequently used in daily newspapers, informs much better in long and complicated articles, which are accumulated with ratios, numbers and miscellaneous data. Recently adding with data visualization units in their structure, world leading newspapers are aiming to make complicated and boring data more understandable, memorable and remarkable with an effective visualization

As an emerging technology, Virtual Reality (VR) is perceived as a platform with the potential to changethe artwork generation methods and consumption paradigms The immersion, presence and interactionfeatures of VR provides for art unique opportunities to find new forms of expression. The potential ofVR in the artistic context will be revealed more clearly as researches in this area increase. The way artuses VR, how it interprets it, and the change VR will cause in art will expand the perspective for both.It is seen that in most of the researches on the relationship between VR and art, this relationship isconsidered in a general context. Very few researches has been done on the use of writing for artisticpurposes in VR and a limited number of practical studies have been produced. From this point of view,in this article, the relationship between experimental typography and VR art is examined with examples. The most effective use of writing in both a linguistic context and as a visual expression has been withinthe scope of conceptual art and this has brought new discourses and perspectives to the art. In thisregards, the inclusion of VR in the combination of writing and art may provide completely differentresults in conceptual and intellectual contexts. The intersection of writing, art and VR has a rich potentialfor different perspectives and new patterns. In this paper, the use of writing as the main narrative elementin VR Artworks has been discussed as an experimental typography study. Experimental typography isa practice based on exploration and interpretation, seeking new forms of visual expression apart fromtraditional patterns. VR Artworks based on experimental typography may reveal various contents thatexplore the role of language for art as structured images in virtual environment. Within this article, threeVR Artworks based on the experimental typography are examined and it has seen that they all presenteddifferent visual solutions than the clean, meticulous 3D visualization approach used in most VRapplications. In this context, it has been suggested that the use of experimental typography in VR Artcan expand the narrative language of VR.Gelişmekte olan bir teknoloji olarak Sanal Gerçeklik (SG), sanat üretimi ve tüketimi paradigmalarınıdeğiştirme potansiyeline sahip bir platform olarak görülmektedir. Publisher's Versio

This study was performed to investigate the effects of different oils in the diets of laying quail on their performance, egg quality, serum lipids and fatty acid composition of egg yolk. One hundred and ninety two 12-wk old Japanese quail were allocated to eight groups with two replicates containing 12 quail each. They were fed for 10 weeks on diets containing 4% oil from different sources, viz. either sunflower, sesame, cottonseed, olive, hazelnut, maize, soyabean or fish oil. The dietary oils affected egg weight and its specific gravity, the egg yolk index and the Haugh unit but had no effect on live weight of the birds, eggshell thickness and albumen index. The highest egg weights were recorded in the groups fed olive and sunflower oil. Eggs from the soyabean oil group had the highest specific gravity. Serum triglyceride concentrations were lower in the birds receiving diets containing sunflower and hazelnut oil than in the other treatments. Serum total cholesterol levels were higher in the groups fed hazelnut and cottonseed oil than in those receiving the other oils. Serum low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were lower in the groups fed soyabean and olive oil than the other oil sources. The results of this study demonstrated that olive oil improved egg weight and egg shell quality compared to the other oils tested; fish and soyabean oil increased the omega-3 fatty acid level of egg yolk, and soyabean oil had positive effects on serum lipid concentrations. Incorporation of these oils into the diets of Japanese quail may have practical value in manipulating egg yolk quality. Keywords: Blood lipids, egg, fatty acid, oils, performance, Japanese quail South African Journal of Animal Science Vol. 38 (2) 2008: pp. 91-10

A holistic framework for improved energy performance in marine manufacturing plants

    Get PDF
PhD ThesisWhile the marine industry provides one the most energy-efficient modes of transportation (OECD, 2010), activities of manufacturing plants in this industry, including shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers, are highly energy intensive and environmentally polluting. For instance, a ship is a giant structure consisting of various systems of which construction require very diverse shipyard manufacturing processes such as cutting, bending, blasting, and welding, and so on. Similarly, manufacturing of various machinery and equipment such as marine engines and marine propellers and other onboard equipment and components involve energy-intensive processes such as melting and machining. All the systems and processes are required to be powered using large amounts of energy. Improved energy performance is of great importance for marine manufacturing plants in terms of their business competitiveness because the marine industry represents one of the world`s most open and competitive markets (Stopford, 2009). In such a fiercely competitive market, business factors such as cost-cutting, and good corporate image are imperative to be successful. Also, increased awareness of the effective energy management practices in their production systems will undoubtedly strengthen the ability of marine manufacturers to compete effectively in the open marine market through increased greener corporate image and reduced energy costs. As well as for their benefits, an overall effort from marine manufacturing industries will also contribute to global and national efforts in fighting climate change. Bearing the above motivational reasons, the present study aims to develop a holistic framework for improved energy performance in marine manufacturing plants and to demonstrate the applicability to a typical marine equipment&component manufacturing plant in Turkey. The developed framework consists of the critical energy management themes of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy Use, and Demand Response Participation, which together form a holistic energy management framework incorporating all critical aspects of improved energy performance in a manufacturing plant. The application of the proposed framework requires performing a detailed energy audit and a techno-economic feasibility analysis for renewables-based microgrid application with demand response. In this research, a real application case study of a Turkish marine component&equipment manufacturing plant is chosen and exemplified to demonstrate the applicability of the developed energy management approach. A detailed energy audit was conducted in the manufacturing plant iii selected to identify energy saving potentials, of which implementation would reduce the energy consumption of the plant and increase energy efficiency. At the same time, a dedicated power measurement campaign on energy consuming systems of the plant was performed to collect appropriate data to use in the microgrid feasibility analysis, which explored the techno-economic potential of integrating renewable energy use and demand response participation. The main findings of the proposed framework in the research has demonstrated that there exists a considerable energy efficiency improvement potential within a marine manufacturing plant through the application of various technical and organisational energy saving potentials that can be identified conducting a detailed energy audit. In addition, it has been found that a noteworthy level of power self-sufficiency can be achieved for the plant by exploiting the onsite renewable energy sources through the application of a microgrid. The contribution of demand response participation, with measures such as such peak shaving and grid arbitrage through energy storage to the economic feasibility of the microgrid investment, is found to be remarkable. This research can be seen as one of the first attempts in the area of energy management in marine manufacturing, which makes the current research novel. A significant contribution has been made in addressing the importance of improved energy performance and energy management issues among marine manufacturing plants such as shipyards and marine component/equipment manufacturers. Creating an increased awareness towards the importance of effective energy management and culture, it is envisaged that this study can be utilized by manufacturing plants of the marine industry to improve their energy performance. The developed methodology was successfully applied to a real case, this success can be translated into another case in similar nature by tailoring the developed methodology to the particular needs of other cases.Ministry of National Education of Turke
