Theoretical investigaion of the performance of alternative aviation fuels in an aero-enginve combustion chamber
When considering alternative fuels for aviation, factors such as the overall efficiency of the combustion process and the levels of emissions emitted to the atmosphere, need to be critically evaluated. The physical and chemical properties of a fuel influence the combustion efficiency and emissions and therefore need to be considered. The energy content of a biofuel, which is influenced negatively by the presence of oxygen in the molecular structure (i.e. oxygenated chemical compounds), is relatively low when compared with that of conventional jet fuel. This means that the overall efficiency of the process will be different. In this paper two possible scenarios have been investigated in order to assess the potential to directly replace conventional jet fuel with Methyl Buthanoate - MB (a short chain FAME representing biofuel) and a synthetic jet fuel (FT fuel) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling in a typical Modern Air-Spray Combustor (MAC). In addition the impact of fuel blending on the combustion performance has been investigated. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been verified and validated over past decades to be a powerful design tool in industries where experimental work can be costly, hazardous and time consuming, to support the design and development process. With recent developments in processor speeds and solver improvements, CFD has been successfully validated and used as a tool for optimizing combustor technology. Combustion of each fuel is calculated using a mixture fraction/pdf approach and the turbulence-chemistry interaction has been modelled using the Laminar Flamelet approach. Detailed chemical reaction mechanisms, developed and validated recently by the authors for aviation fuel including kerosene, synthetic fuel and bio-aviation fuel have been employed in the CFD modelling. A detailed comparison of kerosene with alternative fuel performance has been made.
Assessment of the performance of alternative aviation fuel in a modern air-spray combustor (MAC)
Recent concerns over energy security and environmental considerations have highlighted the importance of finding alternative aviation fuels. It is expected that coal and biomass derived fuels will fulfil a substantial part of these energy requirements. However, because of the physical and chemical difference in the composition of these fuels, there are potential problems associated with the efficiency and the emissions of the combustion process. Over the past 25 years Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become increasingly popular with the gas turbine industry as a design tool for establishing and optimising key parameters of systems prior to starting expensive trials. In this paper the performance of a typical aviation fuel, kerosene, an alternative aviation fuel, biofuel and a blend have been examined using CFD modelling. A good knowledge of the kinetics of the reaction of bio aviation fuels at both high and low temperature is necessary to perform reliable simulations of ignition, combustion and emissions in aero-engine. A novel detailed reaction mechanism was used to represent aviation fuel oxidation mechanism. The fuel combustion is calculated using a 3D commercial solver using a mixture fraction/pdf approach. Firstly, the study demonstrates that CFD predictions compare favourably with experimental data obtained by QinetiQ for a Modern Airspray Combustor (MAC) when used with traditional jet fuel (kerosene). Furthermore, the 3D CFD model has been refined to use the laminar flamelet model (LFM) approach that incorporates recently developed chemical reaction mechanisms for the bio-aviation fuel. This has enabled predictions for the bio-aviation fuel to be made. The impact of using the blended fuel has been shown to be very similar in performance to that of the 100% kerosene, confirming that aircraft running on 20% blended fuel should have no significant reduction in performance. It was also found that for the given operating conditions there is a significant reduction in performance when 100% biofuel if used. Additionally, interesting predictions were obtained, related to NOx emissions for the blend and 100% biofuel

School literature textbooks, marked by the risk of impermanence by educational reforms, are noteworthy documents of teaching creativity. In the research approach, the historical and cultural perspective of assessing their role in the transformation of horizons and methods of Polish language education is not enough. One should also take into account the praxeological dimension: devote attention to the creative role of the didactic imagination of the authors in building the textbook as a project for specific educational activities. In this respect, significant changes can now be seen in the understanding of the handbook’s relationship to “live teaching” acts. Textbooks by professional literature researchers are in line with the tradition of complementary lesson outlines of historical and literary knowledge of the subject, li miting didactic obligations to comply with the principles of clarity and accessibility of the message, and (sometimes) student-oriented narrative style. In contrast, innovative textbook constructions, which are created by the initiative of teaching teams in the vicinity of the school workshop, focus attention on the design of a tool to support the work of teachers and students, reaching for the experience of Polish speakers and appealing in different ways to their didactic imagination. The value of a textbook constructions created in this way is in many cases balanced with the achievements of scientific works. One should reach for them in educating Polish students. Należy do nich sięgać w kształceniu polonistów

Critical Closing Pressure During Controlled Increase in Intracranial Pressure - Comparison of Three Methods
Critical closing pressure (CrCP) is the arterial blood pressure (ABP) threshold, below which small arterial vessels collapse and cerebral blood flow ceases. Here we aim to compare three methods for CrCPestimation in scenario of a controlled increase in intracranial pressure (ICP), induced by infusion tests performed in patients with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). METHODS: Computer recordings of directly-measured ICP, ABP and transcranial Doppler cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV), from 37 NPH patients undergoing infusion tests, were retrospectively analyzed. The CrCP was calculated with three methods: one with the first harmonics ratio of the pulse waveforms of ABP and CBFV (CrCPA) and two methods based on a model of cerebrovascular impedance, as functions of both cerebral perfusion pressure (CrCPinv), and of ABP (CrCPninv). CONCLUSION: All methods give similar results in response to ICP changes. In the case of individual CrCP measurements for each patient, CrCPA may provide negative, non-physiological values. Invasive critical closing pressure is most sensitive to variations in ICP and CPP and can be used as an indicator of the cerebrospinal and the cerebrovascular system status during infusion tests. This study was partially supported by the statutory fund of the Mossakowski Medical Research Centre Polish Academy of Sciences and Institute of Electronic Systems, Warsaw University of Technology.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono przegląd literatury obejmujący chorych z urazowym uszkodzeniem mózgu, a dotyczący związku między rozległością urazu, zmianami w czułości baroreceptorów i odległymi wynikami leczenia.

Baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability are predictors of mortality in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage.
OBJECT: We aimed to investigate the link between the autonomic nervous system (ANS) impairment, assessed using baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate variability (HRV) indices, and mortality after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: A total of 57 patients (56 ± 18 years) diagnosed with aSAH were retrospectively enrolled in the study, where 25% of patients died in the hospital. BRS was calculated using a modified cross-correlation method. Time- and frequency-domain HRV indices were calculated from a time-series of systolic peak intervals of arterial blood pressure signals. Additionally, cerebral autoregulation (CA) was assessed using the mean velocity index (Mxa), where Mxa > 0 indicates impaired CA. RESULTS: Both BRS and HRV indices were lower in non-survivors than in survivors. The patients with disturbed BRS and HRV had more extensive haemorrhage in the H-H scale (p = .040) and were more likely to die (p = .013) when compared to patients with the intact ANS. The logistic regression model for mortality included: the APACHE II score (p = .002; OR 0.794) and the normalised high frequency power of the HRV (p < <.001; OR 0.636). A positive relationship was found between the Mxa and BRS (R = 0.48, p = .003), which suggests that increasing BRS is moderately strongly associated with worsening CA. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that lower values of HRV indices and BRS correlate with mortality and that there is a link between cerebral dysautoregulation and the analysed estimates of the ANS in aSAH patients
Metoda spektroskopii w bliskiej podczerwieni (NIRS, near infrared spectroscopy) umożliwia nieinwazyjny pomiar regionalnego utlenowania mózgu (rSO2), dzięki wykorzystaniu selektywnej absorpcji promieniowania fal elektromagnetycznych z zakresu 660–940 nm, przez obecne w organizmie człowieka chromofory.
