Triple unification of inflation, dark matter, and dark energy using a single field
We construct an explicit scenario whereby the same material driving inflation
in the early Universe can comprise dark matter in the present Universe, using a
simple quadratic potential. Following inflation and preheating, the density of
inflaton/dark matter particles is reduced to the observed level by a period of
thermal inflation, of a duration already invoked in the literature for other
reasons. Within the context of the string landscape, one can further argue for
a non-zero vacuum energy of this field, thus unifying inflation, dark matter

We consider the conditions needed to unify the description of dark matter,
dark energy and inflation in the context of the string landscape. We find that
incomplete decay of the inflaton field gives the possibility that a single
field is responsible for all three phenomena. By contrast, unifying dark matter
and dark energy into a single field, separate from the inflaton, appears rather

Beyond Justice, Beyond Peace? Colombia, the Interests of Justice, and the Limits of International Criminal Law
This paper explores the role of Article 53 of the Rome Statute and its ‘interest of justice’ standard in Colombia. After first providing some background to the ICC’s involvement in Colombia in the context of the so-called Justice and Peace Law and the more recent Legal Framework for Peace, we critically explore the reasons why the principle of complementarity is the focus of contemporary debates on the ICC in that country. We suggest that this discussion often ends in stalemate, with little space to move forward. In light of this, in this article we propose an alternative way to advance the discussion; namely, Article 53. We then consider whether, in order to protect transitional justice mechanisms adopted by states in order to end conflicts and move towards national reconciliation, the OTP has the power under Article 53(1)(c) to stop a prosecution on the basis that it is not in the interests of justice. Much here depends upon whether justice is interpreted broadly or narrowly. Two questions are central: First, should transitional justice arrangements be permissible under the legal framework established by the Rome Statute? Second, should the OTP concern itself with matters pertaining to domestic politics or should it understand its role as being completely independent from national processes? We advocate a narrow reading of the concept of justice, meaning that the OTP cannot use Article 53(1)(c) to prevent ICC intervention on the basis that it risks disrupting a transitional justice mechanism
SVMs for Automatic Speech Recognition: a Survey
Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are, undoubtedly, the most employed core technique for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). Nevertheless, we are still far from achieving high-performance ASR systems. Some alternative approaches, most of them based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), were proposed during the late eighties and early nineties. Some of them tackled the ASR problem using predictive ANNs, while others proposed hybrid HMM/ANN systems. However, despite some achievements, nowadays, the preponderance of Markov Models is a fact.
During the last decade, however, a new tool appeared in the field of machine learning that has proved to be able to cope with hard classification problems in several fields of application: the Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The SVMs are effective discriminative classifiers with several outstanding characteristics, namely: their solution is that with maximum margin; they are capable to deal with samples of a very higher dimensionality; and their convergence to the minimum of the associated cost function is guaranteed.
These characteristics have made SVMs very popular and successful. In this chapter we discuss their strengths and weakness in the ASR context and make a review of the current state-of-the-art techniques. We organize the contributions in two parts: isolated-word recognition and continuous speech recognition. Within the first part we review several techniques to produce the fixed-dimension vectors needed for original SVMs. Afterwards we explore more sophisticated techniques based on the use of kernels capable to deal with sequences of different length. Among them is the DTAK kernel, simple and effective, which rescues an old technique of speech recognition: Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). Within the second part, we describe some recent approaches to tackle more complex tasks like connected digit recognition or continuous speech recognition using SVMs. Finally we draw some conclusions and outline several ongoing lines of research
Newtonian Collapse of Scalar Field Dark Matter
In this letter, we develop a Newtonian approach to the collapse of galaxy
fluctuations of scalar field dark matter under initial conditions inferred from
simple assumptions. The full relativistic system, the so called
Einstein-Klein-Gordon, is reduced to the Schr\"odinger-Newton one in the weak
field limit. The scaling symmetries of the SN equations are exploited to track
the non-linear collapse of single scalar matter fluctuations. The results can

Wormhole Cosmic Censorship
We analyze the properties of a Kerr-like wormhole supported by phantom
matter, which is an exact solution of the Einstein-phantom field equations. It
is shown that the solution has a naked ring singularity which is unreachable to
null geodesics falling freely from the outside. Similarly to Roger Penrose's
cosmic censorship, that states that all naked singularities in the Universe
must be protected by event horizons, here we conjecture from our results that a
naked singularity can also be fully protected by the intrinsic properties of a
wormhole's throat
