Sensitivity of DEA models to measurement errors
One of the weak points of DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) models indicated in literature[1,2] is their sensitivity to variable measurement errors. The occurrence of data interference, whichis the basis of the productivity analysis, may distort the classification of the units and may causemisjudgement of their effectiveness. In the article the results of simulation concerning the DEA models sensitivity to occurrence andfeatures of random element in the monitored variables describing the model are presented. The set of thirty DMU (Decision Making Units) described by the means of three inputvariables, two output variables and one environmental variable was analysed. On the basis of thedetermined initial value of all the kinds of variables for each DMU, their relative effectiveness andtheir ranking were determined. Then, the value of each variable was interfered randomly with thenoise with normal distribution N(m,σ) and once again relative effectiveness and ranking of DMUwere determined. The calculation was done repeatedly, taking into account different levels ofvariance. The simulation carried out in the described manner was the basis for the assessment ofthe stability of the classification with the occurrence of measurement errors. On the basis of the research, the limits of DEA models resistance to the occurrence of errors inthe data that are used for productivity analysis were determined. In the authors’ opinion, the proposals in the article may be recognised as a vital input for thedevelopment of the methodology of comparative productivity analysis by the means of DEAmodels
Podejście holarchiczne w realizacji projektów typu foresight
The article discusses one of the contemporary approaches to thinking about the future, i.e. foresight. The authors present the concept of mapping predictive foresight studies onto the holone-holarchy structure. Against this background they identify a programme (project) as the key structural element in the holistic approach to foresight. They also argue that the holarchic approach can be useful when applied to foresight.
asocjacyjnego. Dane literaturowe wskazują, źe po zakończeniu treningu,
w obszarach stanowiących reprezentacje stymulowanych wibrys dochodzi do
warunkowania klasycznego. Badania prowadzone były metodami rejestracji
elektrofizjologicznej ex vivo z pojedynczych neuronów whole-cell patch-clamp
w skrawkach kory somatosensorycznej myszy, poddanych wcześniej
warunkowaniu awersyjnemu. W pierwszym etapie badań przeprowadzono
charakterystykę elektrofizjologiczną glutaminianergicznych neuronów
pobudzających i GABAergicznych neuronów hamujących. Następnie
rejestrowano postsynaptyczne prądy hamujące i pobudzające, powstające
spontanicznie. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały, że warunkowanie awersyjne nie
spowodowało zmian podstawowych parametrów elektrofizjologicznych komórek
GABAergicznych i glutaminianergicznych. w skrawkach kory pochodzących
z mózgów zwierząt poddanych uprzednio procedurze warunkowania
klasycznego.
rejestrowanych w komórkach GABA i glutaminianergicznych. Wyniki te
potwierdzają hipotezę o nasileniu przekaźnictwa synaptycznego w połączeniach
pomiędzy interneuronami GABAergicznymi a neuronami pobudzającymi,
powstającym w efekcie treningu.
Zaobserwowane nasilenie przekaźnictwa GABAergicznego stanowi,
prawdopodobnie, wyraz adaptacyjnej modyfikacji sieci neuronalnej połączeń
pomiędzy neuronami baryłki, której sens polega na zapewnieniu niezbędnej
równowagi pomiędzy przekaźnictwem pobudzającym a hamującym
w zmienionych warunkach, związanych z awersyjnym warunkowaniem
klasycznym.
Zadanie pt. „Digitalizacja i udostępnienie w Cyfrowym Repozytorium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego kolekcji czasopism naukowych wydawanych przez Uniwersytet Łódzki” nr 885/P-DUN/2014 dofinansowane zostało ze środków MNiSW w ramach działalności upowszechniającej naukę
Benchmarking szansą poprawy pozycji konkurencyjnej polskich uczelni
The position of Polish schools of higher education in international rankings, the number of significant publications or patents show that Polish schools are not capable of withstanding global competition. The authors believe that benchmarking, if used properly, would offer an opportunity to improve the schools’ competitive position. The paper describes the key ideas of benchmarking and aspects associated with its application in HE institutions. Examples indicate that systematic comparisons with other entities as well as creative adaptation of best practices is an effective way to improve HE institutions as it makes them aware of weaknesses, of challenges faced and development directions. The authors recommend that comparative benchmarking should be used in collaboration between Polish schools.
Gene Expression in Dwarf Mistletoe Related to Explosive Seed Dispersal with special Attention to Aquaporins
Worldwide, mistletoe plants are important forest pests, found in all continents aside from Antarctica. In North America, control of conifer parasitism by dwarf mistletoes, specifically Arceuthobium americanum, is challenging. Dwarf mistletoes are dioecious parasitic flowering plants with a unique and effective explosive seed dispersal mechanism. Due to the large accumulation of water within the fruit, which increases both the fruit size and its internal hydrostatic pressure, the transport of water into the fruit and the possible involvement of plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs), particularly aquaporins (AQPs), were the focus of the investigation. Notably, previous research also demonstrated that cuticle thickening, declining stomata number, and thermogenesis are potential “players” in forcible discharge. As such, molecular work was performed here to reveal genes involved in physiological processes potentially associated with explosive seed dispersal and to examine the expression of these genes. Therefore, the overarching goal of this project was to obtain gene sequencing and expression data for Arceuthobium spp. to gain insights into the involvement of AQPs and other proteins likely responsible for generating high hydrostatic pressure and discharge. Many methods were employed to extract the RNA from the fruit, including both traditional and commercially available methods, and following successful extraction, a cDNA library was constructed. A non-standard heterologous microarray hybridization, unconventionally used for transcription analysis of non-model species, employing both the MicroCASTer handheld system and an Affymetrix Arabidopsis Gene
1.0 ST microarray was used to determine gene sequence and expression. Five genes sequences were obtained from the handheld system: AQP2, ABC transporter, Ribulose Bisphosphate Carboxylase-Oxygenase, Alkaline/neutral invertase, and Sterol-14 demethylase. To confirm that AQP2 codes for plasma membrane intrinsic protein 2 (PIP2), gateway cloning followed by a physiological study with stopped-flow spectroscopy was undertaken. Despite sequence divergence between the two species, 24.2% of Arabidopsis Gene 1.0 ST array was hybridized to dwarf mistletoe RNA; this hybridization identified approximately 1,000 genes that are highly differentially expressed in dwarf mistletoe during fruit development. Further investigation of the Affymetrix results revealed several additional mistletoe genes, Stomatal cytokinesis defective2, Movement protein binding protein, Eceriferum1, and SHINE2, that are seasonally up and down regulated (May vs. September) and are likely involved in the explosive seed dispersal process. With these results in hand, research can advance towards molecular insights into not only explosive seed dispersal in dwarf mistletoe, but also into other processes such as development, reproduction, photosynthesis light response, and parasitism-associated gene expression within dwarf mistletoe and
related plants. Ideally, this work will provide new opportunities for investigating novel avenues of plant-plant pest control
Guz chromochłonny nadnerczy wybiórczo wydzielający dopaminę - opis przypadku
Pheochromocytoma of the adrenal gland secreting catecholamines is a relatively rare endocrinological cause of secondary arterial hypertension,
usually developing in people aged between 40 and 50, more often in women than in men. Each accidentally diagnosed lesion in
adrenal glands is an incidentalom0a. Incidentalomas are most commonly benign tumours: adenomas, adipomas and angiomas; less often
they are of a malignant or metastatic character. Establishing the character of the lesion and its hormonal activity is of crucial diagnostic
significance. Diagnostics of pheochromocytoma covers marking the urine output of catecholamines and their metabolites, as well as marking
serum amine concentration. Possible treatment of hormonally active lesions includes their surgical removal.
This thesis presents the case of a young female suffering from arterial hypertension for several years, including organ complications, who
was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma selectively secreting dopamine. (Endokrynol Pol 2012; 63 (5): 391-395)Guz chromochłonny nadnerczy (pheochromocytoma) wydzielający aminy katecholowe jest stosunkowo rzadką endokrynologiczną
przyczyną wtórnego nadciśnienia tętniczego, rozwijającą się zwykle między 40. a 50. rokiem życia, częściej u kobiet niż u mężczyzn.
Każda przypadkowo rozpoznana zmiana w nadnerczach to incydentaloma. Incydentaloma to najczęściej nowotwory łagodne - gruczolaki,
ustalenie charakteru zmiany i jej aktywności hormonalnej.
(Endokrynol Pol 2012; 63 (5): 391-395
Nonlinear terahertz control of the lead halide perovskite lattice
Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have emerged as an excellent class of semiconductors for next-generation solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Tailoring physical properties by fine-tuning the lattice structures has been explored in these materials by chemical composition or morphology. Nevertheless, its dynamic counterpart, phonon-driven ultrafast material control, as contemporarily harnessed for oxide perovskites, has not yet been established. Here, we use intense THz electric fields to obtain direct lattice control via nonlinear excitation of coherent octahedral twist modes in hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites. These Raman-active phonons at 0.9 to 1.3 THz are found to govern the ultrafast THz-induced Kerr effect in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase and thus dominate the phonon-modulated polarizability with potential implications for dynamic charge carrier screening beyond the Fröhlich polaron. Our work opens the door to selective control of LHP’s vibrational degrees of freedom governing phase transitions and dynamic disorder

Inhibiting heat-shock protein 90 reverses sensory hypoalgesia in diabetic mice
Increasing the expression of Hsp70 (heat-shock protein 70) can inhibit sensory neuron degeneration after axotomy. Since the onset of DPN (diabetic peripheral neuropathy) is associated with the gradual decline of sensory neuron function, we evaluated whether increasing Hsp70 was sufficient to improve several indices of neuronal function. Hsp90 is the master regulator of the heat-shock response and its inhibition can up-regulate Hsp70. KU-32 (N-{7-[(2R,3R,4S,5R)-3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-6,6-dimethyl-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yloxy]-8-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl}acetamide) was developed as a novel, novobiocin-based, C-terminal inhibitor of Hsp90 whose ability to increase Hsp70 expression is linked to the presence of an acetamide substitution of the prenylated benzamide moiety of novobiocin. KU-32 protected against glucose-induced death of embryonic DRG (dorsal root ganglia) neurons cultured for 3 days in vitro. Similarly, KU-32 significantly decreased neuregulin 1-induced degeneration of myelinated Schwann cell DRG neuron co-cultures prepared from WT (wild-type) mice. This protection was lost if the co-cultures were prepared from Hsp70.1 and Hsp70.3 KO (knockout) mice. KU-32 is readily bioavailable and was administered once a week for 6 weeks at a dose of 20 mg/kg to WT and Hsp70 KO mice that had been rendered diabetic with streptozotocin for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of diabetes, both WT and Hsp70 KO mice developed deficits in NCV (nerve conduction velocity) and a sensory hypoalgesia. Although KU-32 did not improve glucose levels, HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) or insulin levels, it reversed the NCV and sensory deficits in WT but not Hsp70 KO mice. These studies provide the first evidence that targeting molecular chaperones reverses the sensory hypoalgesia associated with DPN.This work was supported by grants from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the National Institutes of Health [NS054847 and DK073594] (to R.T.D.) and [CA120458 and CA109265] (to B.S.J.B.)
