Binary and nonbinary description of hypointensity for search and retrieval of brain MR images

Diagnosis accuracy in the medical field, is mainly affected by either lack of sufficient understanding of some diseases or the inter/intra-observer variability of the diagnoses. We believe that mining of large medical databases can help improve the current status of disease understanding and decision making. In a previous study based on binary description of hypointensity in the brain, it was shown that brain iron accumulation shape provides additional information to the shape-insensitive features, such as the total brain iron load, that are commonly used in clinics. This paper proposes a novel, nonbinary description of hypointensity in the brain based on principal component analysis. We compare the complementary and redundant information provided by the two descriptions using Kendall's rank correlation coefficient in order to better understand the individual descriptions of iron accumulation in the brain and obtain a more robust and accurate search and retrieval system

Challenges associated with formal education in rural areas, Policy brief Rural NEET Youth Network

    Get PDF
The youth demographic in rural areas continues to experience a global decline despite significant efforts from both national and international organisations to downturn this ne gative trend. Such efforts aim to create conditions for learning as well as opportunities that can enable young people to develop knowledge, skills, and competencies. Despite the economic recovery trends of recent years (before the COVID-19 pandemic), young people continue to be particularly vulnerable and especially during times of crisis. Youth disengagement from the labour market can lead to economic loss, demotivation, margina lisation, and be reflected in challenges such as a lack of qualifications, health issues, poverty, and other forms of social exclusion. To address such challenges, it is vital that a detailed understan ding of youth needs is developed. This work should be based on heterogeneous characteristics (personal vs institutional) that include (although not limited to) socio-economic, demographic, financial, technical, and institutional perspectives. This information should subsequently inform both future policy-making and decision-making processes

Multispectral images of peach related to firmness and maturity at harvest

wo multispectral maturity classifications for red soft-flesh peaches (‘Kingcrest’, ‘Rubyrich’ and ‘Richlady’ n = 260) are proposed and compared based on R (red) and R/IR (red divided by infrared) images obtained with a three CCD camera (800 nm, 675 nm and 450 nm). R/IR histograms were able to correct the effect of 3D shape on light reflectance and thus more Gaussian histograms were produced than R images. As fruits ripened, the R/IR histograms showed increasing levels of intensity. Reference measurements such as firmness and visible spectra also varied significantly as the fruit ripens, firmness decreased while reflectance at 680 nm increased (chlorophyll absorption peak)

Classification d'expressions vocales passives versus actives

Biomedical image time series registration with particle filtering (Parçacık süzgeci ile biyomedikal görüntü zaman serisi çakıştırma)

We propose a family of methods for biomedical image time series registration based on Particle filtering. The first method applies an intensity-based information-theoretic approach to calculate importance weights. An effective second group of methods use landmark-based approaches for the same purpose by automatically detecting intensity maxima or SIFT interest points from image time series. A brute-force search for the best alignment usually produces good results with proper cost functions, but becomes computationally expensive if the whole search space is explored. Hill climbing optimizations seek local optima. Particle filtering avoids local solutions by introducing randomness and sequentially updating the posterior distribution representing probable solutions. Thus, it can be more robust for the registration of image time series. We show promising preliminary results on dendrite image time series

The subchondral bone in articular cartilage repair: current problems in the surgical management

    Get PDF
As the understanding of interactions between articular cartilage and subchondral bone continues to evolve, increased attention is being directed at treatment options for the entire osteochondral unit, rather than focusing on the articular surface only. It is becoming apparent that without support from an intact subchondral bed, any treatment of the surface chondral lesion is likely to fail. This article reviews issues affecting the entire osteochondral unit, such as subchondral changes after marrow-stimulation techniques and meniscectomy or large osteochondral defects created by prosthetic resurfacing techniques. Also discussed are surgical techniques designed to address these issues, including the use of osteochondral allografts, autologous bone grafting, next generation cell-based implants, as well as strategies after failed subchondral repair and problems specific to the ankle joint. Lastly, since this area remains in constant evolution, the requirements for prospective studies needed to evaluate these emerging technologies will be reviewed

The major problem with the simultaneous improvement of yield with higher fiber quality is the negative association due to the linkage and pleiotropic effects between lint yield components and fiber quality parameters. The objectives of this research were to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) of parents and specific combining abilities (SCA) of hybrids for fiber quality parameters and within-boll yield components, and to determine the association of fiber quality parameters with basic within-boll lint yield components. In this study, eight cotton cultivars and 15 F1 hybrids obtained by crossing five lines and three testers in the line x tester mating system during 2006 were planted in a randomized block design with four replications in 2007. The predominance of non-additive gene action was estimated for all traits except for the upper half mean fiber length (UHM), fiber strength, and seeds per boll, which were controlled by an additive type gene action due to the high GCA variance. Among the parents, 'Askabat-100' and 'Carmen' were the best general combiners for fiber length, strength, and uniformity index (UI). Additionally, 'GW Teks' and 'Sahin-2000' were determined to be good combiners for lint weight per seed (L/S) and spinnable fibers per seed (F/S). The SCA effects showed that the best specific combination was 'Sealand-542' x 'Sahin-2000' and 'TAM 94L-25' x 'SG-125' for lint percentage, L/S, and lint weight unit per seed surface area.
