    The Acceleration Mechanism of Resistive MHD Jets Launched from Accretion Disks

    We analyzed the results of non-linear resistive magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of jet formation to study the acceleration mechanism of axisymmetric, resistive MHD jets. The initial state is a constant angular momentum, polytropic torus threaded by weak uniform vertical magnetic fields. The time evolution of the torus is simulated by applying the CIP-MOCCT scheme extended for resistive MHD equations. We carried out simulations up to 50 rotation period at the innermost radius of the disk created by accretion from the torus. The acceleration forces and the characteristics of resistive jets were studied by computing forces acting on Lagrangian test particles. Since the angle between the rotation axis of the disk and magnetic field lines is smaller in resistive models than in ideal MHD models, magnetocentrifugal acceleration is smaller. The effective potential along a magnetic field line has maximum around z∼0.5r0z \sim 0.5r_0 in resistive models, where r0r_0 is the radius where the density of the initial torus is maximum. Jets are launched after the disk material is lifted to this height by pressure gradient force. Even in this case, the main acceleration force around the slow magnetosonic point is the magnetocentrifugal force. The power of the resistive MHD jet is comparable to the mechanical energy liberated in the disk by mass accretion.     Special Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulation of Two-Component Outflow Powered by Magnetic Explosion on Compact Stars

    The nonlinear dynamics of outflows driven by magnetic explosion on the surface of a compact star is investigated through special relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We adopt, as the initial equilibrium state, a spherical stellar object embedded in hydrostatic plasma which has a density ρ(r)∝rβˆ’Ξ±\rho(r) \propto r^{- \alpha} and is threaded by a dipole magnetic field. The injection of magnetic energy at the surface of compact star breaks the equilibrium and triggers a two-component outflow. At the early evolutionary stage, the magnetic pressure increases rapidly around the stellar surface, initiating a magnetically driven outflow. A strong forward shock driven outflow is then excited. The expansion velocity of the magnetically driven outflow is characterized by the Alfv\'en velocity on the stellar surface, and follows a simple scaling relation vmag∝vA1/2v_{\rm mag} \propto {v_{\rm A}}^{1/2}. When the initial density profile declines steeply with radius, the strong shock is accelerated self-similarly to relativistic velocity ahead of the magnetically driven component. We find that it evolves according to a self-similar relation Ξ“sh∝rsh\Gamma_{\rm sh} \propto r_{\rm sh}, where Ξ“sh\Gamma_{\rm sh} is the Lorentz factor of the plasma measured at the shock surface rshr_{\rm sh}. Purely hydrodynamic process would be responsible for the acceleration mechanism of the shock driven outflow. Our two-component outflow model, which is the natural outcome of the magnetic explosion, can provide a better understanding of the magnetic active phenomena on various magnetized compact stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 15 pages, 2 tables, 17 figure

    Tardive Dyskinesia in Relation to Estimated Dopamine D2 Receptor Occupancy in Patients with Schizophrenia: Analysis of the CATIE data

    Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between antipsychotic-induced tardive dyskinesia (TD) and estimated dopamine D2 receptor occupancy levels in patients with schizophrenia, using the dataset from the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials in Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE). Methods The dataset from 218 subjects (risperidone, N=78; olanzapine, N=100; ziprasidone, N=40) who presented with a score of zero on the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) at baseline in Phase 1 of the CATIE study, and remained for β‰₯6 months, was used. Peak and trough dopamine D2 receptor occupancy levels on the day of the AIMS assessment at the endpoint were estimated from plasma antipsychotic concentrations, using population pharmacokinetic analysis and our D2 prediction model. The estimated dopamine D2 receptor occupancy levels were compared between patients who presented an AIMS score of β‰₯2 at endpoint and those with a score of zero, using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results Estimated dopamine D2 receptor occupancy levels at trough were significantly higher in subjects who developed involuntary movements (N=23) than those who did not (N=195) (71.7Β±14.4% vs. 64.3Β±19.3%, p<0.05) while no significant difference was found in the estimated peak D2 receptor occupancy between them (75.4Β±8.7% vs. 72.1Β±9.9%, p=0.07). When the analyses were separately conducted for the three drugs, there were no significant differences in estimated peak or trough D2 occupancy although the values were consistently numerically higher among those developing involuntary movements. Conclusion Greater dopamine D2 receptor blockade with antipsychotics at trough might increase the risk of tardive involuntary movements although this finding needs to be replicated in larger trials

    Three-dimensional MHD Simulations of Jets from Accretion Disks

    We report the results of 3-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of a jet formation by the interaction between an accretion disk and a large scale magnetic field. The disk is not treated as a boundary condition but is solved self-consistently. To investigate the stability of MHD jet, the accretion disk is perturbed with a non-axisymmetric sinusoidal or random fluctuation of the rotational velocity. The dependences of the jet velocity (vz)(v_z), mass outflow rate (MΛ™w)(\dot{M}_w), and mass accretion rate (MΛ™a)(\dot{M}_a) on the initial magnetic field strength in both non-axisymmetric cases are similar to those in the axisymmetric case. That is, vz∝B01/3v_z \propto B_0^{1/3}, MΛ™w∝B0\dot{M}_w \propto B_0 and MΛ™a∝B01.4\dot{M}_a \propto B_0^{1.4} where B0B_0 is the initial magnetic field strength. The former two relations are consistent with the Michel's steady solution, vz∝(B02/MΛ™w)1/3v_z \propto (B_0^2/\dot{M}_w)^{1/3}, although the jet and accretion do not reach the steady state. In both perturbation cases, a non-axisymmetric structure with m=2m=2 appears in the jet, where mm means the azimuthal wave number. This structure can not be explained by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and seems to originate in the accretion disk. Non-axisymmetric modes in the jet reach almost constant levels after about 1.5 orbital periods of the accretion disk, while all modes in the accretion disk grow with oscillation. As for the angular momentum transport by Maxwell stress, the vertical component, ,iscomparabletotheradialcomponent,, is comparable to the radial component, , in the wide range of initial magnetic field strength.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ.     Effect of Interacting Rarefaction Waves on Relativistically Hot Jets

    The effect of rarefaction acceleration on the propagation dynamics and structure of relativistically hot jets is studied through relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. We emphasize the nonlinear interaction of rarefaction waves excited at the interface between a cylindrical jet and the surrounding medium. From simplified one-dimensional models with radial jet structure, we find that a decrease in the relativistic pressure due to the interacting rarefaction waves in the central zone of the jet transiently yields a more powerful boost of the bulk jet than that expected from single rarefaction acceleration. This leads to a cyclic in-situ energy conversion between thermal and bulk kinetic energies which induces radial oscillating motion of the jet. The oscillation timescale is characterized by the initial pressure ratio of the jet to the ambient medium, and follows a simple scaling relation Ο„oscillation∝(Pjet,0/Pamb,0)1/2\tau_{\rm oscillation} \propto (P_{\rm jet,0}/P_{\rm amb,0})^{1/2}. It is confirmed from extended two-dimensional simulations that this radial oscillating motion in the one-dimensional system manifests as modulation of the structure of the jet in a more realistic situation where a relativistically hot jet propagates through an ambient medium. It is found that when the ambient medium has a power law pressure distribution, the size of the reconfinement region along the propagation direction of the jet in the modulation structure Ξ»\lambda evolves according to a self-similar relation λ∝tΞ±/2\lambda \propto t^{\alpha/2} where Ξ±\alpha is the power-law index of the pressure distribution.Comment: 38 pages, 21 figures.     Analysis of virulence factors of Helicobacter pylori isolated from a Vietnamese population

    BACKGROUND: The incidence of gastric cancer differs among countries in Asia, and it has been suggested that virulence factors associated with Helicobacter pylori are partly responsible. The aim of this study was to investigate several genetic factors regarded as virulence or molecular epidemiologic markers in H. pylori isolates from Vietnamese subjects. RESULTS: The cagA, vacA and cag right-end junction genotypes of 103 H. pylori strains from Vietnam (54 from Hanoi and 49 from Ho Chi Minh) were determined by PCR and sequencing. Three types of deletion in the region located upstream of the cagA Glu-Pro-Ile-Tyr-Ala (EPIYA) repeat region were identified: the 39-bp deletion type, the 18-bp deletion type, and the no-deletion type. The majority of strains studied (77%; 80/103) had the 18-bp deletion irrespective of geographical location in the country or clinical outcome. All of the 39-bp and 18-bp deletion-type strains possessed the East Asian type cagA repeat region. The type II cag right-end junction genotype was predominant (84%). The vacA m1 genotype was significantly more common in strains isolated in Hanoi, where the incidence of gastric cancer is higher, than in strains from Ho Chi Minh. CONCLUSION: Pre-EPIYA-region typing of the cagA gene could provide a new genetic marker of H. pylori genomic diversity. Our data support the hypothesis that vacA m1 is closely associated with gastric carcinogenesis

    Seismicity controlled by resistivity structure : the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, Kyushu Island, Japan

    The M JMA 7.3 Kumamoto earthquake that occurred at 1:25 JST on April 16, 2016, not only triggered aftershocks in the vicinity of the epicenter, but also triggered earthquakes that were 50–100 km away from the epicenter of the main shock. The active seismicity can be divided into three regions: (1) the vicinity of the main faults, (2) the northern region of Aso volcano (50 km northeast of the mainshock epicenter), and (3) the regions around three volcanoes, Yufu, Tsurumi, and Garan (100 km northeast of the mainshock epicenter). Notably, the zones between these regions are distinctively seismically inactive. The electric resistivity structure estimated from one-dimensional analysis of the 247 broadband (0.005–3000 s) magnetotelluric and telluric observation sites clearly shows that the earthquakes occurred in resistive regions adjacent to conductive zones or resistive-conductive transition zones. In contrast, seismicity is quite low in electrically conductive zones, which are interpreted as regions of connected fluids. We suggest that the series of the earthquakes was induced by a local accumulated stress and/or fluid supply from conductive zones. Because the relationship between the earthquakes and the resistivity structure is consistent with previous studies, seismic hazard assessment generally can be improved by taking into account the resistivity structure. Following on from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake series, we suggest that there are two zones that have a relatively high potential of earthquake generation along the western extension of the MTL

    Genomic Profiling of Submucosal-Invasive Gastric Cancer by Array-Based Comparative Genomic Hybridization

    Genomic copy number aberrations (CNAs) in gastric cancer have already been extensively characterized by array comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) analysis. However, involvement of genomic CNAs in the process of submucosal invasion and lymph node metastasis in early gastric cancer is still poorly understood. In this study, to address this issue, we collected a total of 59 tumor samples from 27 patients with submucosal-invasive gastric cancers (SMGC), analyzed their genomic profiles by array CGH, and compared them between paired samples of mucosal (MU) and submucosal (SM) invasion (23 pairs), and SM invasion and lymph node (LN) metastasis (9 pairs). Initially, we hypothesized that acquisition of specific CNA(s) is important for these processes. However, we observed no significant difference in the number of genomic CNAs between paired MU and SM, and between paired SM and LN. Furthermore, we were unable to find any CNAs specifically associated with SM invasion or LN metastasis. Among the 23 cases analyzed, 15 had some similar pattern of genomic profiling between SM and MU. Interestingly, 13 of the 15 cases also showed some differences in genomic profiles. These results suggest that the majority of SMGCs are composed of heterogeneous subpopulations derived from the same clonal origin. Comparison of genomic CNAs between SMGCs with and without LN metastasis revealed that gain of 11q13, 11q14, 11q22, 14q32 and amplification of 17q21 were more frequent in metastatic SMGCs, suggesting that these CNAs are related to LN metastasis of early gastric cancer. In conclusion, our data suggest that generation of genetically distinct subclones, rather than acquisition of specific CNA at MU, is integral to the process of submucosal invasion, and that subclones that acquire gain of 11q13, 11q14, 11q22, 14q32 or amplification of 17q21 are likely to become metastatic

    Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroduodenal diseases in Vietnam: a cross-sectional, hospital-based study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The rate of <it>H. pylori </it>infection in Vietnam is reportedly high, but the spectrum of <it>H. pylori</it>-associated gastroduodenal diseases has not been systematically investigated. Moreover, despite the similarities of ethnicity and diet, the age-standardized incidence rate of gastric cancer in the northern city of Hanoi is higher than that in the southern city of Ho Chi Minh, but the reason for this phenomenon is unknown. The virulence of Vietnamese <it>H. pylori </it>has also not been investigated in detail.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Individuals undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy were randomly recruited. <it>H. pylori </it>infection status was determined based on the combined results of culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, rapid urine test and serum ELISA. Peptic ulcer (PU) and gastroesophageal reflux disease was diagnosed by endoscopy, and chronic gastritis was determined histologically. <it>H. pylori </it>virulence factors were investigated by PCR and sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the examined patients, 65.6% were infected with <it>H. pylori</it>. The prevalence of infection was significantly higher in those over 40 years of age than in those aged ≀40. Chronic gastritis was present in all <it>H. pylori</it>-infected individuals, 83.1% of whom had active gastritis, and 85.3% and 14.7% had atrophy and intestinal metaplasia, respectively. PU was present in 21% of infected patients, whereas its incidence was very low in non-infected individuals. The prevalence of PU was significantly higher in Hanoi than in Ho Chi Minh. The prevalence of <it>vacA m1</it>, which has been identified as an independent risk factor for PU in Vietnam, was significantly higher among <it>H. pylori </it>isolates from Hanoi than among those from Ho Chi Minh.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>H. pylori </it>infection is common in Vietnam and is strongly associated with PU, active gastritis, atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. <it>vacA m1 </it>is associated with an increased risk for PU and might contribute to the difference in the prevalence of PU and gastric cancer between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.</p
