Syriac Apocalyptic and the Body Politic: from Individual Salvation to the Fate of the State. Notes on Seventh Century Texts

One of the main goals of this paper is to comment on the eschatological notion of “end” as found in a Syriac apocalyptic text of the seventh century, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel (or Pseudo-Daniel), recently edited by Matthias Henze and the possible links with the canonical tradition related to the Book of Daniel in the Syriac Bible and to present its own specificity due to the eschatological tone that relates the text with the classical authors of the fourth century like Aphraat. La idea de Bizancio en la tradición intelectual rusa y soviética, 1840-1970

This article deals with the image of Byzantium in russian scholarship (both history, philosophy and theology) from the early XIXth century to mid-XXth century. A certain knowledge about Byzantium and the image of that empire built on that knowledge was important not only for professional historians dealing with early Russian history but also for theologians and philosophers working on the place of orthodox tradition within Russian heritage and on the ways of linking that tradition to the modern world.Este artículo trata de la imagen de Bizancio en el pensamiento ruso de los siglos XIX y XX (tanto en historia como en filosofía y teología). Un cierto conocimiento sobre Bizancio y la imagen de ese imperio que se construye a partir de ese conocimiento fue fundamental no sólo para los historiadores profesionales que trabajaban sobre historia rusa primitiva sino también para aquellos filósofos y teólogos que estudiaban el lugar de la tradición ortodoxa en la herencia cultural rusa y la forma de relacionarla con el mundo moderno

Biblical exegesis in Byzantium in the 10th century: fragments of a discussion on the theological orthodoxy

Este artículo se refiere a un inédito trabajo exegético de Basil de Neopatras, un obispo bizantino del siglo X. El texto se centra en el Commentary of Daniel donde Basilio hace hincapié en los lazos entre el emperador y Cristo, ambos actuando como co gobernantes del Imperio Cristiano. El artículo también apunta a los posibles vínculos con trabajos de ambos, Aretas de Cesárea y Leo Choirosphaktes, quienes se oponen sobre asuntos de teología ortodoxa.This article deals with a hitherto unedited exegetical Work of Basil of Neopatras, a 10th Century byzantine Bishop. The Text focuses on the Commentary of Daniel where Basil stresses the ties between the Emperor and Christ, both acting as Co-Rulers of the Christian Empire. The article also points to the possible links with the Works of both Aretas of Caesarea and Leo Choirosphaktes who opposed each other on matters of theological Orthodoxy

The apocalyptic christian in the VII Century and the controversy adversus judaeos in Syria-Palestine and Mesopotamia

Se estudiarán sucesos políticos y militares de principios del siglo VII, la ocupación persa de la Tierra de Israel y de Egipto que dieron lugar a la redacción, por parte tanto de judíos como de cristianos, a una serie de textos apocalípticos cuya circulación propició el desarrollo de una nueva instancia de la polémica Adversus Judaeos. Este componente –de respuesta cristiana a una apocalíptica judía- puede permitirnos, creemos, establecer un nuevo contexto para la dicha polémica. We will study political and military events of the early seventh century, the persian occupation of the land of Israel and Egypt that led to the writing, by jews and christians, to a series of apocalyptic texts whose circulation led to the development of a new instance of the controversy Adversus Judaeos.
