Role of Electrochemically Active Bacteria in the Treatment of Piggery and Poultry Wastewaters from Umuagwo in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria

In this study, piggery and poultry wastewaters were used as agro-based industrial wastewaters to evaluate the role of electrochemically active bacteria in an anodic chamber of microbial fuel cell (MFC) with 0.1M potassium permanganate cathodic cell using salt bridge preparation. The BOD5, COD, TDS, TSS, nitrogen, phosphates, pH and conductivity served as indicative parameters for determining the wastewater treatment efficiencies (WWTE) of the MFCs. Results obtained from the WWTE reveal that the MFCs were able to reduce the piggery wastewater parameters, BOD, COD, TDS, TSS, nitrogen, phosphate, pH, conductivity by 89.66, 69.57, 52.20, 69.04, 70.27, 59.57, - 4.41 and 0.99 %, respectively while the same parameters for the poultry wastewater were reduced by 82.61, 78.59, 58.03, 67.13, 70.49, 64.52, 2.70 and 28.04 %, respectively. Statistically, there were significant differences before and after treatments and between wastewater samples revealing that that the effect of treatment before and after on physicochemical parameters were different for piggery wastewater than they were for poultry wastewater. Microbes in the biofilms on the electrodes (potential exoelectrogens) include Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, Corynebacterium sp., Enterococcus sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Salmonella sp. and Shigella sp. while the fungal isolates include Mucor sp., Saccharomyces sp. and Aspergillus sp. in both piggery and poultry wastewaters. Thus, microbial fuel cell bacteria oxidize the organic matter leading to decontamination of the wastewater – a significant approach in addressing the public health threats of these wastes in our country

Magnetic properties of X-Pt (X=Fe,Co,Ni) alloy systems

We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloy systems in ordered and disordered phases. The influence of various exchange-correlation functionals on values of equilibrium lattice parameters and magnetic moments in ordered Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloys have been studied using linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The electronic structure calculations for the disordered alloys have been carried out using augmented space recursion technique in the framework of tight binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The effect of short range order has also been studied in the disordered phase of these systems. The results show good agreements with available experimental values.Comment: 21 pages, 4 eps figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Physics Condensed Matte

Isolation, Growth and Identification of Chlorpyrifos Degrading Bacteria from Agricultural Soil in Anambra State, Nigeria

Abstract The extensive use of pesticides is one of the major causes of pollution of soil and water environments. The current method for removing such contaminants from the environment through biodegradation has been shown to be more effective than any other method. Three pesticide degrading bacteria were isolated and identified through cultural and biochemical tests as strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serretia marcescens and Klebsiella oxytoca. Their growth in mineral salt medium supplemented with 20mg/l of Chlorpyrifos was monitored at optical density of 600nm. The result showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa had maximum growth in ten days, while Serretia marcescens and Klebsiella oxytoca recorded highest growth after six days of incubation. HPLC analysis of the residual Chlorpyrifos after 14 days incubation showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was able to degrade 60% of the pesticide; Klebsiella oxytoca degraded 54%, while Serretia marcescens had 53% reduction of the pesticide concentration in the mineral salt medium. The results of this research indicated that the isolated bacteria can be used for bioremediation of Chlorpyrifos contaminated soil and water ecosystems

    Healthcare Barriers of Refugees Post-resettlement

The majority of refugees spend the greater part of their lives in refugee camps before repatriation or resettlement to a host country. Limited resources and stress during residence in refugee camps can lead to a variety of acute and chronic diseases which often persist upon resettlement. However, for most resettled refugees little is known about their health needs beyond a health assessment completed upon entry. We conducted a qualitative pilot-study in San Diego County, the third largest area in California, USA for resettling refugees, to explore health care access issues of refugees after governmental assistance has ended. A total of 40 guided in-depth interviews were conducted with a targeted sample of informants (health care practitioners, employees of refugee serving organizations, and recent refugee arrivals) familiar with the health needs of refugees. Interviews revealed that the majority of refugees do not regularly access health services. Beyond individual issues, emerging themes indicated that language and communication affect all stages of health care access—from making an appointment to filling out a prescription. Acculturation presented increased stress, isolation, and new responsibilities. Additionally, cultural beliefs about health care directly affected refugees’ expectation of care. These barriers contribute to delayed care and may directly influence refugee short- and long-term health. Our findings suggest the need for additional research into contextual factors surrounding health care access barriers, and the best avenues to reduce such barriers and facilitate access to existing services

CASE REPORT - Spontaneous scrotal faecal fistula in a neonate: report of a case

    No full text
A 21 day old boy with spontaneous scrotal faecal fistula following a neglected strangulated right inguinal hernia is reported. He had necrotizing fasciitis of the right scrotum with sparing of the testis. He successfully had debridement, herniotomy and bowel resection with end-to-end anastomosis. This is a rare occurrence in infants and seems to result from late presentation. Health education coupled with early referral and prompt repair of inguinal hernia in neonates and infants would reduce this complication
