    Continuous Flow AFM Imaging Reveals Fluidity and Time Dependent Interactions of Antimicrobial Dendrimer with Model Lipid Membranes

    In this paper, an amphiphilic peptide dendrimer with potential applications against multi-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus was synthesized and studied on model cell membranes. The combination of quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy imaging during continuous flow allowed for in situ monitoring of the very initial interaction processes and membrane transformations on longer time scales. We used three different membrane compositions of low and high melting temperature phospholipids to vary the membrane properties from a single fluid phase to a pure gel phase, while crossing the phase coexistence boundaries at room temperature. The interaction mechanism of the dendrimer was found to be time-dependent and to vary remarkably with the fluidity and coexistence of liquid-solid phases in the membrane. Spherical micelle-like dendrimer-lipid aggregates were formed in the fluid-phase bilayer and led to partial solubilization of the membrane, while in gel-phase membranes, the dendrimers caused areas of local depressions followed by redeposition of flexible lipid patches. Domain coexistence led to a sequence of events initiated by the formation of a ribbon-like network and followed by membrane solubilization via spherical aggregates from the edges of bilayer patches. Our results show that the dendrimer molecules were able to destroy the membrane integrity through different mechanisms depending on the lipid phase and morphology and shed light on their antimicrobial activity. These findings could have an impact on the efficacy of the dendrimers since lipid membranes in certain bacteria have transition temperatures very close to the host body temperature

    We experimentally characterized a birefringent microstructured polymer fiber of specific construction, which allows for single mode propagation in two cores separated by a pair of large holes. The fiber exhibits high birefringence in each of the cores as well as relatively weak coupling between the cores. Spectral dependence of the group and the phase modal birefringence was measured using an interferometric method. We have also measured the sensing characteristics of the fiber such as the polarimetric sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure and temperature

    We have systematically measured the differential stress-optic coefficient, ?C, in a number of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers drawn with different stress, ranging from 2 up to 27 MPa. ?C was determined in transverse illumination by measuring the dependence of birefringence on additional axial stress applied to the fiber. Our results show that ?C in PMMA fibers has a negative sign and ranges from -4.5 to -4.5×10-12 Pa-1, depending on the drawing stress. Increase of the drawing stress results in greater initial fiber birefringence and lower ?C

    Multichannel dispersed emission spectra recorded upon a selective excitation of Rydberg electronic energy states in the ZnAr and CdAr van der Waals (vdW) complexes are analysed as a proof-of-concept of the future experimental approach. Simulations of the emission spectra are based on ab-initio calculated interatomic potentials and transition dipole moments (TDMs).     We have systematically measured the differential stress-optic coefficient, ΔC, and Young's modulus, E, in a number of PMMA fibers drawn with different stress, ranging from 2 up to 27 MPa. Effect of temperature annealing on those parameters was also investigated. ΔC was determined in transverse illumination by measuring the dependence of birefringence on additional axial stress applied to the fiber. Our results show that ΔC in PMMA fibers has a negative sign and ranges from -4.5 to -1.5×10-12 Pa -1 depending on the drawing stress. Increase of the drawing stress results in greater initial fiber birefringence and lower ΔC. The dependence of ΔC and initial birefringence upon drawing stress is nonlinear and gradually saturates for higher drawing stress. Moreover, we find that ΔC is linearly proportional to initial fiber birefringence and that annealing the fiber has no impact on the slope of this dependence. On the other hand, no clear dependence was observed between the fiber drawing stress and the Young's modulus of the fibers as measured using microscopic digital image correlation with the fibers tensioned using an Instron tension tester

    Effect of dielectric medium anisotropy on the polarization degree of emission from a single quantum dash

The experiments have partially been performed within the laboratory infrastructure financed by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education Grant No. 6167/IA/119/2012.Excitonic emission from single InAs/InGaAlAs/InP quantum dashes has been investigated in the context of degree of linear polarization by post-growth modification of its surrounding dielectric medium. We present optical spectroscopy measurements on a symmetric squared pedestal structures (mesas), and asymmetric rectangular ones oriented parallel or perpendicular to the main in-plane axis of the dashes [1-10]. Polarization resolved microphotoluminescence shows a significant quantitative modification of the degree of linear polarization value from -20% up to 70%. These results have been confronted with calculations of the coupling between the exciton transition dipole moment and electromagnetic field distributed in the vicinity of a quantum dash inside a processed mesa.Postprin

    A gastrointestinal stromal tumor with mesenteric and retroperitoneal invasion

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are rare visceral sarcomas arising in the gastrointestinal tract wall. In this report we present a case of gastrointestinal stromal tumors with mesenteric and retroperitoneal invasion, describe and discuss its computed tomography findings.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 57-years-old male patient has been complaining of abdominal distention, weight lose, and hematuria. During physical examination, significant distention and multiple palpable tumor masses were identified on the abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography showed multiple, well-defined, soft tissue masses with homogenous and heterogeneous pattern, in the mesenteric and retroperitoneal areas. Unlike specific features of gastrointestinal stromal tumor, renal obstruction and atypical central calcification without chemotherapy that has not been yet described were seen in this case. Computed tomography did not reveal liver metastases and/or the lymph nodes with pathological size. Ultrasonography-guided true-cut<sup>® </sup>biopsy was made, histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses demonstrated stromal tumor which, C-KIT (+). The patient underwent left ureterectomy, left nephrectomy and total colectomy. Postoperative histopathological analyses revealed lower grade malignant GISTs. As of 17 months after the surgery, he is alive and free of recurrence.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>When intraabdominal, multiple, large (>5 cm), well-circumscribed, homogenous or heterogeneous mass lesions without ascites, omental caking and lymph nodes metasteses were seen, gastrointestinal stromal tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis.</p

    The LAGUNA design study- towards giant liquid based underground detectors for neutrino physics and astrophysics and proton decay searches

    The feasibility of a next generation neutrino observatory in Europe is being considered within the LAGUNA design study. To accommodate giant neutrino detectors and shield them from cosmic rays, a new very large underground infrastructure is required. Seven potential candidate sites in different parts of Europe and at several distances from CERN are being studied: Boulby (UK), Canfranc (Spain), Fr\'ejus (France/Italy), Pyh\"asalmi (Finland), Polkowice-Sieroszowice (Poland), Slanic (Romania) and Umbria (Italy).
