Chiral helix in AdS/CFT with flavor
The D3/D7 holographic model aims at a better approximation to QCD by adding
to N=4 SYM theory N_f of N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the fundamental
representation of SU(N_c) -- the "flavor fields" representing the quarks.
Motivated by a recent observation of the importance of the Wess-Zumino-like
(WZ) term for realizing the chiral magnetic effect within this model, we
revisit the phase diagram of the finite temperature, massless D3/D7 model in
the presence of external electric/magnetic fields and at finite chemical
potential. We point out that the A-V-V triangle anomaly represented by the WZ
term in the D7 brane probe action implies the existence of new phases that have
been overlooked in the previous studies. In the case of an external magnetic
field and at finite chemical potential, we find a "chiral helix" phase in which
the U(1)_A angle of D7 brane embedding increases monotonically along the
direction of the magnetic field -- this is a geometric realization of the
chiral spiral phase in QCD. We also show that in the case of parallel electric
and magnetic fields (E,B) there exists a phase in which the D7 brane
spontaneously begins to rotate, so that the U(1)_A angle changes as a function
of time -- this may be called the "spontaneous rotation" phase; it is a
geometrical realization of a phase with non-zero chiral chemical potential. Our
results call for a more thorough study of the (T,B,E,\mu) phase diagram of the
massless D3/D7 model taking a complete account of the WZ term.

Wandering as a sociomaterial practice : extending the theorization of GPS tracking in cognitive impairment
Electronic tracking through global positioning systems (GPSs) is used to monitor people with cognitive impairment who “wander” outside the home. This ethnographic study explored how GPS-monitored wandering was experienced by individuals, lay carers, and professional staff. Seven in-depth case studies revealed that wandering was often an enjoyable and worthwhile activity and helped deal with uncertainty and threats to identity. In what were typically very complex care contexts, GPS devices were useful to the extent that they aligned with a wider sociomaterial care network that included lay carers, call centers, and health and social care professionals.
In this context, “safe” wandering was a collaborative accomplishment that depended on the technology’s materiality, affordances, and aesthetic properties; a distributed knowledge of the individual and the places they wandered through, and a collective and dynamic interpretation of risk. Implications for design and delivery of GPS devices and services for cognitive impairment are discussed
Quantum chaotic scattering in time-dependent external fields: random matrix approach
We review the random matrix description of electron transport through open
quantum dots, subject to time-dependent perturbations. All characteristics of
the current linear in the bias can be expressed in terms of the scattering
matrix, calculated for a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Assuming that the
Hamiltonian belongs to a Gaussian ensemble of random matrices, we investigate
various statistical properties of the direct current in the ensemble.
Particularly, even at zero bias the time-dependent perturbation induces
current, called photovoltaic current. We discuss dependence of the photovoltaic
current and its noise on the frequency and the strength of the perturbation. We
also describe the effect of time-dependent perturbation on the weak

Holographic chiral magnetic spiral
We study the ground state of baryonic/axial matter at zero temperature
chiral-symmetry broken phase under a large magnetic field, in the framework of
holographic QCD by Sakai-Sugimoto. Our study is motivated by a recent proposal
of chiral magnetic spiral phase that has been argued to be favored against
previously studied phase of homogeneous distribution of axial/baryonic currents
in terms of meson super-currents dictated by triangle anomalies in QCD. Our
results provide an existence proof of chiral magnetic spiral in strong coupling
regime via holography, at least for large axial chemical potentials, whereas we
don't find the phenomenon in the case of purely baryonic chemical potential.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figure
Gross-Neveu Models, Nonlinear Dirac Equations, Surfaces and Strings
Recent studies of the thermodynamic phase diagrams of the Gross-Neveu model
(GN2), and its chiral cousin, the NJL2 model, have shown that there are phases
with inhomogeneous crystalline condensates. These (static) condensates can be
found analytically because the relevant Hartree-Fock and gap equations can be
reduced to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, whose deformations are
governed by the mKdV and AKNS integrable hierarchies, respectively. Recently,
Thies et al have shown that time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions describing
baryon scattering in the massless GN2 model satisfy the Sinh-Gordon equation,
and can be mapped directly to classical string solutions in AdS3. Here we
propose a geometric perspective for this result, based on the generalized
Weierstrass spinor representation for the embedding of 2d surfaces into 3d
spaces, which explains why these well-known integrable systems underlie these
various Gross-Neveu gap equations, and why there should be a connection to
classical string theory solutions. This geometric viewpoint may be useful for
higher dimensional models, where the relevant integrable hierarchies include
the Davey-Stewartson and Novikov-Veselov systems.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figur
Quantum Statistics and Entanglement of Two Electromagnetic Field Modes Coupled via a Mesoscopic SQUID Ring
In this paper we investigate the behaviour of a fully quantum mechanical
system consisting of a mesoscopic SQUID ring coupled to one or two
electromagnetic field modes. We show that we can use a static magnetic flux
threading the SQUID ring to control the transfer of energy, the entanglement
and the statistical properties of the fields coupled to the ring. We also
demonstrate that at, and around, certain values of static flux the effective
coupling between the components of the system is large. The position of these
regions in static flux is dependent on the energy level structure of the ring
and the relative field mode frequencies, In these regions we find that the
entanglement of states in the coupled system, and the energy transfer between

Resistance to First-Line Anti-TB Drugs Is Associated with Reduced Nitric Oxide Susceptibility in Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Background and objective: The relative contribution of nitric oxide (NO) to the killing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in human tuberculosis (TB) is controversial, although this has been firmly established in rodents. Studies have demonstrated that clinical strains of M. tuberculosis differ in susceptibility to NO, but how this correlates to drug resistance and clinical outcome is not known. Methods: In this study, 50 sputum smear- and culture-positive patients with pulmonary TB in Gondar, Ethiopia were included. Clinical parameters were recorded and drug susceptibility profile and spoligotyping patterns were investigated. NO susceptibility was studied by exposing the strains to the NO donor DETA/NO. Results: Clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis showed a dose- and time-dependent response when exposed to NO. The most frequent spoligotypes found were CAS1-Delhi and T3_ETH in a total of nine known spoligotypes and four orphan patterns. There was a significant association between reduced susceptibility to NO (>10% survival after exposure to 1mM DETA/NO) and resistance against first-line anti-TB drugs, in particular isoniazid (INH). Patients infected with strains of M. tuberculosis with reduced susceptibility to NO showed no difference in cure rate or other clinical parameters, but a tendency towards lower rate of weight gain after two months of treatment. Conclusion: There is a correlation between resistance to first-line anti-TB drugs and reduced NO susceptibility in clinical strains of M. tuberculosis. Further studies including the mechanisms of reduced NO susceptibility are warranted and could identify targets for new therapeutic interventions
What we talk about when we talk about "global mindset": managerial cognition in multinational corporations
Recent developments in the global economy and in multinational corporations have placed significant emphasis on the cognitive orientations of managers, giving rise to a number of concepts such as “global mindset” that are presumed to be associated with the effective management of multinational corporations (MNCs). This paper reviews the literature on global mindset and clarifies some of the conceptual confusion surrounding the construct. We identify common themes across writers, suggesting that the majority of studies fall into one of three research perspectives: cultural, strategic, and multidimensional. We also identify two constructs from the social sciences that underlie the perspectives found in the literature: cosmopolitanism and cognitive complexity and use these two constructs to develop an integrative theoretical framework of global mindset. We then provide a critical assessment of the field of global mindset and suggest directions for future theoretical and empirical research
Contrast-enhanced ultrasound of the spleen: an introduction and pictorial essay
A wide variety of pathologies can produce focal lesions within the spleen. These are being more frequently encountered as imaging technology improves. It is vital that radiologists are aware of these pathologies to enable accurate diagnosis. The role of ultrasound contrast in splenic disease will be discussed and illustrated with cases likely to be encountered by general and abdominal radiologists
NFATc1 supports imiquimod-induced skin inflammation by suppressing IL-10 synthesis in B cells
Epicutaneous application of Aldara cream containing the TLR7 agonist imiquimod (IMQ) to mice induces skin inflammation that exhibits many aspects of psoriasis, an inflammatory human skin disease. Here we show that mice depleted of B cells or bearing interleukin (IL)-10-deficient B cells show a fulminant inflammation upon IMQ exposure, whereas ablation of NFATc1 in B cells results in a suppression of Aldara-induced inflammation. In vitro, IMQ induces the proliferation and IL-10 expression by B cells that is blocked by BCR signals inducing NFATc1. By binding to HDAC1, a transcriptional repressor, and to an intronic site of the Il10 gene, NFATc1 suppresses IL-10 expression that dampens the production of tumour necrosis factor-α and IL-17 by T cells. These data indicate a close link between NFATc1 and IL-10 expression in B cells and suggest NFATc1 and, in particular, its inducible short isoform, NFATc1/αA, as a potential target to treat human psoriasis
