    Detailed behavioral modeling of bang-bang phase detectors

    In this paper, the metastability of current-mode logic (CML) latches and flip-flops is studied in detail. Based on the results of this analysis, a behavioral model of bang-bang phase detectors (BBPDs) is proposed, which is able to reliably capture the critical deadzone effect. The impact of jitter and of process, voltage and temperature variations on the BBPD behavior is also investigated. The proposed model can be used with advantage in the high-level design and verification of e.g. clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit

    Exposure to cold but not exercise increases carbon turnover rates in specific tissues of a passerine

    Carbon turnover differs between tissues within an animal, but the extent to which ecologically relevant increases in metabolism affect carbon turnover rates is largely unknown. We tested the energy expenditure and protein turnover hypotheses that predict increased carbon turnover, either in association with increased daily energy expenditure, or in concert with tissue-specific increased protein metabolism. We used stable-isotope-labeled diets to quantify the rate of carbon turnover in 12 different tissues for three groups of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata): cold-exposed birds kept at ambient temperatures below their thermoneutral zone, exercised birds that were flown for 2 h per day in a flight arena, and control birds that were kept at ambient temperatures within their thermoneutral zone and that were not exercised. We found that increases in metabolism associated with cold-exposure but not exercise produced measurable increases in carbon turnover rate of, on average, 2.4±0.3 days for pectoral muscle, gizzard, pancreas and heart, even though daily energy intake was similar for exercised and cold-exposed birds. This evidence does not support the energy expenditure hypothesis, and we invoke two physiological processes related to protein metabolism that can explain these treatment effects: organ mass increase and tissue-specific increase in activity. Such changes in carbon turnover rate associated with cold temperatures translate into substantial variation in the estimated time window for which resource use is estimated and this has important ecological relevance

    Real-Time-RG Analysis of the Dynamics of the Spin-Boson Model

    Using a real-time renormalization group method we determine the complete dynamics of the spin-boson model with ohmic dissipation for coupling strengths α≲0.1−0.2\alpha\lesssim 0.1-0.2. We calculate the relaxation and dephasing time, the static susceptibility and correlation functions. Our results are consistent with quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the Shiba relation. We present for the first time reliable results for finite cutoff and finite bias in a regime where perturbation theory in α\alpha or in tunneling breaks down. Furthermore, an unambigious comparism to results from the Kondo model is achieved.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    The Occurrence of the Hall--Instability in Crusts of Isolated Neutron Stars

    In former papers we showed that during the decay of a neutron star's magnetic field under the influence of the Hall--drift, an unstable rise of small--scale field structures at the expense of the large--scale background field may happen. This linear stability analysis was based on the assumption of a uniform density throughout the neutron star crust, whereas in reality the density and all transport coefficients vary by many orders of magnitude. Here, we extend the investigation of the Hall--drift induced instability by considering realistic profiles of density and chemical composition, as well as background fields with more justified radial profiles. Two neutron star models are considered differing primarily in the assumption on the core matter equation of state. For their cooling history and radial profiles of density and composition we use known results to infer the conductivity profiles. These were fed into linear calculations of a dipolar field decay starting from various initial configurations. At different stages of the decay, snapshots of the magnetic fields at the equator were taken to yield background field profiles for the stability analysis. The main result is that the Hall instability may really occur in neutron star crusts. Characteristic growth times are in the order of \lesssim 10^4 ... 10^6 yrs depending on cooling age and background field strength.     Tunneling broadening of vibrational sidebands in molecular transistors

    Transport through molecular quantum dots coupled to a single vibration mode is studied in the case with strong coupling to the leads. We use an expansion in the correlation between electrons on the molecule and electrons in the leads and show that the tunneling broadening is strongly suppressed by the combination of the Pauli principle and the quantization of the oscillator. As a consequence the first Frank-Condon step is sharper than the higher order ones, and its width, when compared to the bare tunneling strength, is reduced by the overlap between the groundstates of the displaced and the non-displaced oscillator.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures.     An Update Based on the SCORE-Deutschland Risk Charts

    Estimation of absolute risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), preferably with population-specific risk charts, has become a cornerstone of CVD primary prevention. Regular recalibration of risk charts may be necessary due to decreasing CVD rates and CVD risk factor levels. The SCORE risk charts for fatal CVD risk assessment were first calibrated for Germany with 1998 risk factor level data and 1999 mortality statistics. We present an update of these risk charts based on the SCORE methodology including estimates of relative risks from SCORE, risk factor levels from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults 2008–11 (DEGS1) and official mortality statistics from 2012. Competing risks methods were applied and estimates were independently validated. Updated risk charts were calculated based on cholesterol, smoking, systolic blood pressure risk factor levels, sex and 5-year age-groups. The absolute 10-year risk estimates of fatal CVD were lower according to the updated risk charts compared to the first calibration for Germany. In a nationwide sample of 3062 adults aged 40–65 years free of major CVD from DEGS1, the mean 10-year risk of fatal CVD estimated by the updated charts was lower by 29% and the estimated proportion of high risk people (10-year risk > = 5%) by 50% compared to the older risk charts. This recalibration shows a need for regular updates of risk charts according to changes in mortality and risk factor levels in order to sustain the identification of people with a high CVD risk

    Modeling of Personalized Treatments in Colon Cancer Based on Preclinical Genomic and Drug Sensitivity Data

    The current standard therapies for advanced, recurrent or metastatic colon cancer are the 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin or irinotecan schedules (FOxFI) +/− targeted drugs cetuximab or bevacizumab. Treatment with the FOxFI cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens causes significant toxicity and might induce secondary cancers. The overall low efficacy of the targeted drugs seen in colon cancer patients still is hindering the substitution of the chemotherapy. The ONCOTRACK project developed a strategy to identify predictive biomarkers based on a systems biology approach, using omics technologies to identify signatures for personalized treatment based on single drug response data. Here, we describe a follow-up project focusing on target-specific drug combinations. Back- ground for this experimental preclinical study was that, by analyzing the tumor growth inhibition in the PDX models by cetuximab treatment, a broad heterogenic response from complete regression to tumor growth stimulation was observed. To provide confirmation of the hypothesis that drug combinations blocking alternatively activated oncogenic pathways may improve therapy outcomes, 25 models out of the well-characterized ONCOTRACK PDX panel were subjected to treatment with a drug combination scheme using four approved, targeted cancer drugs
