    Communication is key : Extracellular vesicles as mediators of infection and defence during host-microbe interactions in animals and plants

In this review, we suggest that EVs have evolved into a highly regulated system of communication with complex functions including export of wastes, toxins and nutrients, targeted delivery of immune effectors, and vectors of RNA silencing. Eukaryotic EVs come in different shapes and sizes and have been classified according to their biogenesis and size distributions. Small EVs (sEVs or exosomes) are released through fusion of endosome-derived multivesicular bodies (MVBs) with the plasma membrane. Medium EVs (mEVs or microvesicles) bud off the plasma membrane as a form of exocytosis. Finally, large EVs (lEVs or apoptotic bodies) are produced as a result of the apoptotic process. This review considers EV secretion and uptake in four eukaryotic kingdoms, three of which produce cell walls. The impact cell walls have on EVs in plants and fungi are discussed, as are roles of fungal EVs in virulence. Contributions of plant EVs to development and innate immunity are presented. Compelling cases are sporophytic self-incompatibility and cellular invasion by haustorium-forming filamentous pathogens. The involvement of EVs in all of these eukaryotic processes is reconciled considering their evolutionary history.Peer reviewe

    Lyman continuum leaker candidates among highly ionised, low-redshift dwarf galaxies selected from HeII

    Contemporary research suggests that the reionisation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the early Universe was predominantly realised by star-forming (proto-)galaxies (SFGs). Due to observational constraints, our knowledge on the origins of sufficient amounts of ionising Lyman continuum (LyC) photons and the mechanisms facilitating their transport into the IGM remains sparse. Recent efforts have thus focussed on the study of local analogues to these high-redshift objects. We used archival spectroscopic SDSS DR12 data to select a sample of low-z He II 4686 emitters and restricted it to a set of SFGs with an emission line diagnostic sensitive to the presence of an AGN, which serves as our only selection criterion. Our final sample consists of eighteen low-mass, low-metallicity dwarf galaxies which appear to be predominantly ionised by stellar sources. We find large O32 ratios and [S II] deficiencies, which provide strong indications for these galaxies to be LyC Emitters (LCEs). At least 40% of these objects are candidates for featuring cosmologically significant LyC escape fractions >10%. Their SFHs exhibit strong similarities and almost all galaxies appear to contain an old (>1 Gyr) stellar component, while also harbouring a young, two-stage (~10 Myr and <1 Myr) starburst, which we speculate might be related to LyC escape. The properties of the compact emission line galaxies presented here align well with those observed in many local LCEs. In fact, our sample may prove as an extension to the rather small catalogue of local LCEs, as the extreme interstellar medium (ISM) conditions we find are assumed to facilitate LyC leakage. Notably, all of our eighteen candidates are significantly closer (z<0.1) than most established LCEs. If the inferred LyC photon loss is genuine, this demonstrates that selecting SFGs from He II 4686 is a powerful selection criterion in the search for LCEs.Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures.     The Effect of Thermal Processing and Chemical Composition on Secondary Carbide Precipitation and Hardness in High-Chromium Cast Irons

    The excellent abrasion resistance of high-chromium cast irons (HCCIs) is given by an optimal combination of hard eutectic and secondary carbides (SC) and a supporting matrix. The tailoring of the microstructure is performed by heat treatments (HTs), with the aim to adjust the final properties (such as hardness and abrasion resistance). In this work, the influence of chemical composition on the microstructure and hardness of HCCI_26%Cr is evaluated. An increase in the matrix hardness was detected after HTs resulting from combining precipitation of M23C6 SC during destabilization, and austenite/martensite transformation during quenching. Kinetic calculations of the destabilization process showed that M7C3 secondary carbides are the first to precipitate during heating, reaching a maximum at 850 °C. During subsequent heating up to 980 °C and holding at this temperature, they transformed completely to M23C6. According to the MatCalc simulations, further precipitation of M23C6 occurred during cooling, in the temperature range 980–750 °C. Both phenomena were related to experimental observations in samples quenched after 0-, 30-, 60- and 90-min destabilization, where M23C6 SC were detected together with very fine SC precipitated in areas close to eutectic carbides

    The Effect of Marine Protected Areas on Fishers\u27 Income in the Philippines

    The fisheries sector is vital to the Philippine economy, providing substantial employment and income, contributing export earnings, and meeting local food security and nutrition requirements. To protect coastal and marine habitat and to sustain fisheries, over 1000 marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established, in the Philippines. This paper provides empirical evidence on the variance of net revenues linked with MPA establishment and the possible range of relocation costs for fishing effort displaced by an MPA. A total of 424 households were randomly selected from 18 barangays (villages) adjacent to MPAs in three regions in the Philippines. Results show that incomes decrease significantly for both fulltime and seasonal types of fishers after 1-3 years of MPA establishment. The loss occurring through MPA is higher than expected and at least on the short run (up to 4 years) the spill-over effect does not compensate. This information helped to determine the necessary conditional cash transfers for coastal communities who are highly dependent on coastal and marine resources

    Dusty tails of evaporating exoplanets. II. Physical modelling of the KIC 12557548b light curve

    Evaporating rocky exoplanets, such as KIC 12557548b, eject large amounts of dust grains, which can trail the planet in a comet-like tail. When such objects occult their host star, the resulting transit signal contains information about the dust in the tail. We aim to use the detailed shape of the Kepler light curve of KIC 12557548b to constrain the size and composition of the dust grains that make up the tail, as well as the mass loss rate of the planet. Using a self-consistent numerical model of the dust dynamics and sublimation, we calculate the shape of the tail by following dust grains from their ejection from the planet to their destruction due to sublimation. From this dust cloud shape, we generate synthetic light curves (incorporating the effects of extinction and angle-dependent scattering), which are then compared with the phase-folded Kepler light curve. We explore the free-parameter space thoroughly using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Our physics-based model is capable of reproducing the observed light curve in detail. Good fits are found for initial grain sizes between 0.2 and 5.6 micron and dust mass loss rates of 0.6 to 15.6 M_earth/Gyr (2-sigma ranges). We find that only certain combinations of material parameters yield the correct tail length. These constraints are consistent with dust made of corundum (Al2O3), but do not agree with a range of carbonaceous, silicate, or iron compositions. Using a detailed, physically motivated model, it is possible to constrain the composition of the dust in the tails of evaporating rocky exoplanets.     Events with Isolated Charged Leptons and Large Missing Transverse Momentum at HERA

    Striking events with isolated charged leptons, large missing transverse momentum and large transverse momentum of the hadronic final state were observed at the electron proton collider HERA in a data sample corresponding to a luminosity of about 130 pb-1. The H1 collaboration observed 11 events with isolated electrons or muons and with transverse momentum above 25 GeV. Only 3.4+-0.6 events were expected from Standard Model (SM) processes. Six of these events have a transverse momentum of greater than 40 GeV, while 1.3+-0.3 events were expected. The ZEUS collaboration observed good agreement with the SM. However, ZEUS found two events with a similar event topology, but tau leptons instead of electrons or muons in the final state. Only 0.2+-0.05 events were expected from SM processes. For various hypotheses the compatibility of the experimental results was investigated with respect to the SM and with respect to possible explanations beyond the SM. Prospects for the high-luminosity HERA-II data taking period are given

    Effect of dipole-dipole charge interactions on dust coagulation

    This study examines the effect that dipole-dipole charge interactions between fractal aggregates have on the growth of dust grains. Aggregates in a plasma or radiative environment will have charge distributed over their extended surface, which leads to a net dipole moment for the charged grains. A self-consistent N-body code is used to model the dynamics of interacting charged aggregates. The aggregates are free to rotate due to collisions and dipole-dipole electrostatic interactions. These rotations are important in determining the growth rate and subsequent geometry (fractal dimension) of the grains. In contrast to previous studies which have only taken charge-dipole interactions into account, like-charged grains are found to coagulate more efficiently than neutral grains due to preferential incorporation of small aggregates into mid-sized aggregate structures. The charged aggregates tend to be more compact than neutral aggregates, characterized by slightly higher fractal dimensions

    The present paper examines whether there is a connection between the debt of a municipality and its tendency to implement infrastructure projects in the form of public-private partnerships. Similar to loans, public-private partnerships (PPPs) postpone public sector payment obligations into the future. It is therefore sometimes argued that local authorities misuse PPPs to disguise the true level of public debt. Municipalities that have already used the debt instrument intensively should then have a higher PPP tendency. The present paper does not find any reliable evidence for this. Employing data of the state of North Rhine-Westfalia the paper finds that municipalities with PPPs do in fact have higher levels of debt. In an econometric analysis, however, the effect of debt on the number of PPPs turns out to be insignificant and also quantitatively negligible

    Two-Fluid 2.5D MHD-Code for Simulations in the Solar Atmosphere

    We investigate magnetic reconnection due to the evolution of magnetic flux tubes in the solar chromosphere. We developed a new numerical two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code which will perform a 2.5D simulation of the dynamics from the upper convection zone up to the transition region. Our code is based on the Total Variation Diminishing Lax-Friedrichs scheme and makes use of an alternating-direction implicit method, in order to accommodate the two spatial dimensions. Since we apply a two-fluid model for our simulations, the effects of ion-neutral collisions, ionization/recombination, thermal/resistive diffusivity and collisional/resistive heating are included in the code. As initial conditions for the code we use analytically constructed vertically open magnetic flux tubes within a realistic stratified atmosphere. Initial MHD tests have already shown good agreement with known results of numerical MHD test problems like e.g. the Orszag-Tang vortex test

    Quantification of the Phase Transformation Kinetics in High Chromium Cast Irons Using Dilatometry and Metallographic Techniques

    Further development of high chromium cast irons (HCCI) is based on tailoring the microstructure, necessitating an accurate control over the phase transformation and carbide precipitation temperatures and can be achieved by thermal treatments (TT). To understand the underlying mechanisms controlling the transformation kinetics during the different stages of the TT, it is imperative to adjust the TT parameters to have information of the transformations occurring during non-thermal and isothermal heating cycles, since proper selection of the TT parameters ensures the optimum use of the alloying elements. In this work, the boundaries of the phase transformations for a HCCI containing 26 wt pct Cr for different cooling rates (continuous cooling transformation, CCT, diagram) were established by applying dilatometric measurements. Based on the CCT diagram, a temperature-time-transformation (TTT) diagram was constructed by isothermally holding the samples until complete phase transformation. For determining the initiation and finishing of the transformation, the lever rule assisted by derivatives was applied. The phases present after transformation were determined by combining X-ray diffraction (XRD) and metallographic characterization using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Finally, the data obtained from the dilatometer was experimentally verified by isothermally heat treating some samples using laboratory furnaces. The transformed phase fraction from OM and SEM images was then correlated to the fraction obtained from the TTT diagram
