Language resources to be used in teaching of LSP and specialised translation: Annual Reports in the banking sector as ad-hoc parallel and comparable corpora, in English, French and Greek

    Get PDF
This study investigates the use of corpora in teaching of LSP and specialised translation, summarising the findings of the analysis of Annual Reports in the banking sector in English, French and Greek. The objectives of this study are: i. to connect texts and translations from these three languages, whereas English, serving as an intermediate language will help us make the proper choices of terms in Greek and French financial choices, based on informed choices of professional translators, ii. to prepare teaching materials tailored to the communication needs of students of economics or participants of business English courses, as a result of a contrastive linguistic research on the basis of parallel and comparable corpora. For this purpose, we apply easy to use and appealing concordance programs, so that teachers and learners are not put off from working with corpora because the software is too complex or not user-friendly enough. Both teachers and learners would profit a lot more from getting their hands on corpora themselves.

Applications of corpus-based research on language pedagogy: Teaching personal opinion adverbials

    Get PDF
In this paper, we discuss the potential of a corpus-based approach in teaching. Moreover, we give an overview of the searchable online French-Greek parallel corpus (SOURCe), which aims to serve the needs of students of French as a foreign language and also to facilitate future linguistic research. This project is led by Fryni Kakoyianni-Doa and is fully funded by the University of Cyprus. The goal of the project is to provide online content on general education subjects to students and training in a cost-effective manner, as an Open Educational Resource. We demonstrate how these two corpora can be used for theoretical and pedagogical purposes by focusing on personal opinion adverbials

Overview of the SOURCe project as an open educational resource

In this paper, we present an overview of the functionalities of the SOURCe Project, as it has evolved in a span of eight years after its creation in 2012. The SOURCe Project currently includes the search engine for the Searchable Online French-Greek Parallel Corpus for the University of Cyprus (SOURCe), the Pencil (an alignment tool), the Exercises, the Synonyms and the Library. The collection of corpora and tools are designed to be freely available as language processing resources for language and translation teachers and learners, but also for translators. Furthermore, we discuss how its applications can form an important part of effective learning resources. This paper focuses on the development and construction of the SOURCe Project, which is mainly based on a set of parallel corpora. The design, the content, and the availability of these corpora aim to serve the needs of teachers and students of French as a foreign language (other languages may be also added in the future) and also to facilitate future linguistic research. Our approach is a corpus linguistics one, undertaken from the perspective of language acquisition and translation studies

A Free Online Parallel Corpus Construction Tool for Language Teachers and Learners

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this article we present a free online parallel corpus construction tool, the PENCIL tool (Pedagogy Enhancement through Corpora in Language learning), part of the SOURCe Project, a French-Greek parallel corpora collection developed for the University of Cyprus. The goal of this project is to provide an assistive and handy tool for teachers and learners, in order to be used as an Open Educational Resource. This tool enables users, who might not have the required programming skills, to create and customize web-based corpora, by uploading and aligning their own texts

Description of predicative nouns in a Modern Greek financial corpus

    Get PDF
This paper reports on a corpus-based description of predicative nouns in a register-diversified financial corpus. Structural linguistics (Chomsky 1981) and register analysis (Biber & Conrad 2009) are the theoretical backgrounds of this research. As predicative noun, we define a noun derived from a verb, an adjective or a noun that occurs in support verb constructions (Gross 1981).     In order to identify the predicative nouns occurring in a Modern Greek financial corpus we applied a. five Lexicon-Grammar tables containing predicative nouns, along with their distributional and transformational properties (Tziafa 2012); b. 122 finite state automata (Ioannidou 2013), representing noun phrases.

This article presents a comparative study of French and Greek administrative language, as it is used by public administration institutions in their internal communication as well as in their external communi- cation with the citizens. In the present study, we employ a corpus-based contrastive approach, by using bilingual comparable corpora in the subject field of “employment”. First, we present our method concerning the compilation of the comparable corpora and the digital tools used for their processing analysis; and then, we proceed with the analysis of the textual data from a contrastive perspective. We aim to highlight the morphosyntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects that characterize the terms studied across the two languages. This article presents a comparative study of French and Greek administrative language, as it is used by public administration institutions in their internal communication as well as in their external communi- cation with the citizens.
