Regularity of structured ring spectra and localization in K-theory
We identify a regularity property for structured ring spectra, and with it we
prove a natural analogue of Quillen's localization theorem for algebraic

“Fairy-Born and Human-Bred”: From Fantastical to Farcical in Charlotte Brontë’s Fiction
Charlotte Brontë’s writing has always been conscious of negotiating the truth and the idealistic. Brontë composed her mature novels in sharp distinction to the infernal worlds of the Glass Town saga, the fictional kingdoms she and her siblings created throughout their childhoods. Her juvenilia essentially function as high fantasy genre fiction, though over time, Brontë became more intent on exposing “the extreme of reality, closely depicting characters as they had shown themselves … in actual life” as opposed to these “exaggerated idealisms of her early girlhood” (304), or so writes Elizabeth Gaskell in the author’s posthumous biography. This definition of reality, however, was subject to change over the course of Brontë’s writing career. In the span of eight years, her novels became increasingly psychologically complex, leaving behind the fairytale pilgrimages of her juvenilia and Jane Eyre to make room for the eccentric and pessimistic narration found in Villette. Indeed, when we compare the motifs and genre style found in Brontë’s texts, an overarching lack of the fantastical emerges throughout her narrative arcs
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing for offence-related trauma in a mentally disordered sexual offender
Research demonstrates a high incidence of offence-related trauma in mentally disordered offenders convicted of violent and sexual offences. The adaptive information processing (AIP) model offers a theoretical framework for understanding the hypothesised relationship between offence-related trauma and reoffending. Evidence suggests that for a sub-population of offenders presenting with offence-related trauma: (1) therapy may retraumatise them, and (2) unresolved trauma severely blocks the positive benefits of talking therapies. Thus, it is postulated that traumatised violent and sexual offenders may be released into the community when they are still at risk of reoffending. A single case study is presented, which describes the application of eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) for a sexual offender presenting with offence-related trauma, whose offences occurred in the context of serious mental disorder. The identification of offence-related trauma and subsequent resolution of trauma symptomatology are discussed in regard to effective offender rehabilitation. Furthermore, the idiosyncratic nature of offence-related trauma and the application of the standard EMDR protocol for a single traumatic event are considered
Continued Radicals and Cantor Sets
We examine the formation of sets homeomorphic to the ternary Cantor set by continued radicals. We determine properties of bridges and gaps and calculate the thickness of the Cantor set. From this we apply information from continued fractions to continued radicals to obtain new results. We also consider the measure of several Cantor sets
Analyzing large scale trajectory data to identify users with similar behavior
In today\u27s society, social networks are a popular way to connect with friends and family and share what\u27s going on in your life. With the Internet connecting us all closer than ever before, it is increasingly common to use social networks to meet new friends online that share similar interests instead of only connecting with those you already know. For the problem of attempting to connect people with similar interests, this paper proposes the foundation for a Geo-social network that aims to extract the semantic meaning from users\u27 location history and use this information to find the similarity between users. Once the similarity scores are obtained, the results are examined to extract the groups of similar users for the Geo-social network. Computing similarity for a large number of users and then grouping based on the results is a computationally intensive task, but fortunately Apache Spark can be leveraged to execute the comparison and clustering of users in parallel across multiple computers, increasing the computation speed when compared to a centralized version and working quickly enough to suggest friends in real time for a given user --Abstract, page iii
Regression Analysis of Success in Major League Baseball
This thesis is designed to explore whether a team’s success in any given season can be predicted or explained by any number of statistics in that season. There are thirty teams in the MLB; of these thirty, ten make the postseason bracket-style playoffs. The MLB is divided up into two leagues, the American League and the National League; these two leagues are then divided up into three divisions each, the West Division, the Central Division, and the East Division. To make the playoffs a team must either have the most wins in its division after the last game of the season is played, or it can obtain a Wild Card slot by having either the best or second best record among the non-divisional champions
