    Conceptual Model Uncertainty in the Management of the Chi River Basin, Thailand

    With increasing demand and pressures on groundwater resources, accurate and reliable groundwater prediction models are essential for sustainable groundwater management. Groundwater models are merely approximations of reality, and we are unable to either fully characterize or mathematically describe the true complexity of the hydrologic system; therefore, inherent in all models are varying degree of uncertainty. A robust management policy should consider uncertainties in both the imprecise nature of conceptual/numerical models and their parameters. This study addresses the critical question of whether the use of multiple conceptual models to explicitly account for conceptual model uncertainty improves the ability of the models to assist in management decisions. Twelve unique conceptual models, characterized by three alternative geological interpretations, two recharge estimations, and two boundary condition implementations, were formulated to estimate sustainable extraction rates from Thailand’s Thaphra Area, where increasing groundwater withdrawals may result in water level declination and saline water upconing. The models were developed with MODFLOW and calibrated using PEST with the same set of observed hydraulic head data. All of the models were found to reasonably produce predictions of the available heads data. To select the best among the alternative models, multiple criteria have been defined and applied to evaluate the quality of individual models. It was found that models perform differently with respect to different evaluation criteria, and that it is unlikely that a single inter-model comparison criterion will ever be sufficient for general use. The chosen alternative models were applied both individually and jointly to quantify uncertainty in the groundwater management context. Different model-averaging methods were assessed in terms of their ability to assist in quantifying uncertainty in sustainable yield estimation. The twelve groundwater simulation models were additionally linked with optimization techniques to determine appropriate groundwater abstraction rates in the TPA Phu Thok aquifer. The management models aim to obtain maximal yields while protecting water level decline. Despite similar performances among the calibrated models, total sustainable yield estimates vary substantially depending on the conceptual model used and range widely, by a factor of 0.6 in total, and by as much as a factor of 4 in each management area. The comparison results demonstrate that simple averaging achieves a better performance than formal and sophisticated averaging methods such as Maximum Likelihood Bayesian Model Averaging, and produce a similar performance to GLUE and combined-multiple criteria averaging methods for both validation testing and management applications, but is much simpler to implement and use, and computationally much less demanding. The joint assessment of parameter and conceptual model uncertainty was performed by generating the multiple realizations of random parameters from the feasible space for each calibrated model using a simple Monte Carlo approach. The multi-model averaging methods produce a higher percentage of predictive coverage than do any individual models. Using model-averaging predictions, lower optimal rates were obtained to minimize head constraint violations, which do not ensue if a single best model is used with parameter uncertainty analysis. Although accounting for all sources of uncertainty is very important in predicting environmental and management problems, the available techniques used in the literature may be too computationally demanding and, in some cases, unnecessary complex, particularly in data-poor systems. The methods presented here to account for the main sources of uncertainty provide the required practical and comprehensive uncertainty analysis and can be applied to other case studies to provide reliable and accurate predictions for groundwater management applications

    The study has examined the impact of the innovative capability on the firm performance of Indonesian manufacturing firms  The current study aimed to examine the role of competitive advantage and SCH flexibility as a mediator on the financial performance and intellectual CAP nexus, in the Indonesia’s manufacturing  industry. the response rate for this survey is 59.6%. The results in this study suggest a number of issues which must be addressed by the researchers and managers. Therefore, assessing the third variable is vital to have a meaningful interpretation of the association among study variables. In a study, if a relationship does not take into account the mediating mechanism, then it fails to get complete understanding of the relationship. In addition, failing to consider the effect of a mediator may not have clear explanation of the relationship outcome. Contrarily, a model which considers the mediating mechanism is likely to estimate accurate relationship among variables under study. Therefore, in order to reach to the legitimate conclusions and decisions, the practitioners and scholars must consider the significance of competitive advantage on performance and intellectual  capital (CAP) nexus. Hence, results might facilitate the management for taking initiatives to develop acceptance and greater understanding of the intellectual CAP, thereby boosting organizations’ performance as well as their competitive position

    Safety of Induced Sputum Collection in Children Hospitalized With Severe or Very Severe Pneumonia.

    BACKGROUND.: Induced sputum (IS) may provide diagnostic information about the etiology of pneumonia. The safety of this procedure across a heterogeneous population with severe pneumonia in low- and middle-income countries has not been described. METHODS.: IS specimens were obtained as part a 7-country study of the etiology of severe and very severe pneumonia in hospitalized children <5 years of age. Rigorous clinical monitoring was done before, during, and after the procedure to record oxygen requirement, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, consciousness level, and other evidence of clinical deterioration. Criteria for IS contraindications were predefined and serious adverse events (SAEs) were reported to ethics committees and a central safety monitor. RESULTS.: A total of 4653 IS procedures were done among 3802 children. Thirteen SAEs were reported in relation to collection of IS, or 0.34% of children with at least 1 IS specimen collected (95% confidence interval, 0.15%-0.53%). A drop in oxygen saturation that required supplemental oxygen was the most common SAE. One child died after feeding was reinitiated 2 hours after undergoing sputum induction; this death was categorized as "possibly related" to the procedure. CONCLUSIONS.: The overall frequency of SAEs was very low, and the nature of most SAEs was manageable, demonstrating a low-risk safety profile for IS collection even among severely ill children in low-income-country settings. Healthcare providers should monitor oxygen saturation and requirements during and after IS collection, and assess patients prior to reinitiating feeding after the IS procedure, to ensure patient safety

    Pertussis-Associated Pneumonia in Infants and Children From Low- and Middle-Income Countries Participating in the PERCH Study.

    BACKGROUND:  Few data exist describing pertussis epidemiology among infants and children in low- and middle-income countries to guide preventive strategies. METHODS:  Children 1-59 months of age hospitalized with World Health Organization-defined severe or very severe pneumonia in 7 African and Asian countries and similarly aged community controls were enrolled in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health study. They underwent a standardized clinical evaluation and provided nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs and induced sputum (cases only) for Bordetella pertussis polymerase chain reaction. Risk factors and pertussis-associated clinical findings were identified. RESULTS:  Bordetella pertussis was detected in 53 of 4200 (1.3%) cases and 11 of 5196 (0.2%) controls. In the age stratum 1-5 months, 40 (2.3% of 1721) cases were positive, all from African sites, as were 8 (0.5% of 1617) controls. Pertussis-positive African cases 1-5 months old, compared to controls, were more often human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) uninfected-exposed (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.2), unvaccinated (aOR, 3.7), underweight (aOR, 6.3), and too young to be immunized (aOR, 16.1) (all P ≤ .05). Compared with pertussis-negative African cases in this age group, pertussis-positive cases were younger, more likely to vomit (aOR, 2.6), to cough ≥14 days (aOR, 6.3), to have leukocyte counts >20 000 cells/µL (aOR, 4.6), and to have lymphocyte counts >10 000 cells/µL (aOR, 7.2) (all P ≤ .05). The case fatality ratio of pertussis-infected pneumonia cases 1-5 months of age was 12.5% (95% confidence interval, 4.2%-26.8%; 5/40); pertussis was identified in 3.7% of 137 in-hospital deaths among African cases in this age group. CONCLUSIONS:  In the postneonatal period, pertussis causes a small fraction of hospitalized pneumonia cases and deaths; however, case fatality is substantial. The propensity to infect unvaccinated infants and those at risk for insufficient immunity (too young to be vaccinated, premature, HIV-infected/exposed) suggests that the role for maternal vaccination should be considered along with efforts to reduce exposure to risk factors and to optimize childhood pertussis vaccination coverage

    Digitally recorded and remotely classified lung auscultation compared with conventional stethoscope classifications among children aged 1-59 months enrolled in the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) case-control study.

    BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of pneumonia remains challenging. Digitally recorded and remote human classified lung sounds may offer benefits beyond conventional auscultation, but it is unclear whether classifications differ between the two approaches. We evaluated concordance between digital and conventional auscultation. METHODS: We collected digitally recorded lung sounds, conventional auscultation classifications and clinical measures and samples from children with pneumonia (cases) in low-income and middle-income countries. Physicians remotely classified recordings as crackles, wheeze or uninterpretable. Conventional and digital auscultation concordance was evaluated among 383 pneumonia cases with concurrently (within 2 hours) collected conventional and digital auscultation classifications using prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK). Using an expanded set of 737 cases that also incorporated the non-concurrently collected assessments, we evaluated whether associations between auscultation classifications and clinical or aetiological findings differed between conventional or digital auscultation using χ2 tests and logistic regression adjusted for age, sex and site. RESULTS: Conventional and digital auscultation concordance was moderate for classifying crackles and/or wheeze versus neither crackles nor wheeze (PABAK=0.50), and fair for crackles-only versus not crackles-only (PABAK=0.30) and any wheeze versus no wheeze (PABAK=0.27). Crackles were more common on conventional auscultation, whereas wheeze was more frequent on digital auscultation. Compared with neither crackles nor wheeze, crackles-only on both conventional and digital auscultation was associated with abnormal chest radiographs (adjusted OR (aOR)=1.53, 95% CI 0.99 to 2.36; aOR=2.09, 95% CI 1.19 to 3.68, respectively); any wheeze was inversely associated with C-reactive protein >40 mg/L using conventional auscultation (aOR=0.50, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.92) and with very severe pneumonia using digital auscultation (aOR=0.67, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.97). Crackles-only on digital auscultation was associated with mortality compared with any wheeze (aOR=2.70, 95% CI 1.12 to 6.25). CONCLUSIONS: Conventional auscultation and remotely-classified digital auscultation displayed moderate concordance for presence/absence of wheeze and crackles among cases.     Ethanol and Methane Production from Oil Palm Frond by Two Stage SSF

    AbstractA two step, included process producing ethanol from oil palm fronts (OPF) by two-stage simultaneous saccharification and Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation followed by anaerobic digestion of its effluent to produce methane was investigated. OPF was soaked in dilute sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide and water consequently pretreated by microwave for preparing of cellulose and followed by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. The result indicated OPF soaking in water gave a maximal ethanol yield was 0.32 g-ethanol/g-glucose which was 62.75% of the ethanol theoretical yield (0.51g-ethanol/g-glucose). The effluent from the ethanol production process was used to produce methane with the yield of 514 ml CH4/g VS added. Therefore, soaking in water and microwave co-pretreatment could helpful due to its low toxicity and low corrosion compare to sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide which improves the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. The maximum energy output of the process (745 kWh/ ton of OPF) was about 72% of the energy contributed by cellulose fraction, contained in the oil palm frond

    The prime objective of the present study is to examine the impact of green project, green construction and green training of the employees on the customer satisfaction. Moreover, the mediating role of green supply chain management is examined among the mentioned variables as well. In order to collect the data, 476 self-administered questionnaires were distributed among the customers of construction industry of Indonesia. The response rate was 84%. Moreover, in this research, the adoption of PLS path modelling for hypotheses testing was done because of multiple reasons. The findings of the study accepted all proposed hypothesis. It shows that construction firms should focus on their environmentally friendly activities to make the customer satisfied. The findings of the study are important for the practitioners and policy makers of the construction industry by which they can make the customer satisfied through meeting the expectations of the customers.
