A Case Study: Inclusion of Student-Athletes Who Identify as Sexual Minority at an NCAA Division I Institution
In comparison to heterosexual counterparts, sexual minority student-athletes are two times more likely to experience harassment, more negative climates, report feeling deliberately ignored or excluded from team actives and are subjected to orientation-based derogatory marks via electronic means (Rankin & Merson, 2012). This particular population is 2-3 times more likely to experience anxiety and depression, nearly 14% will attempt suicide or acts of self-harm, and are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol (Cunningham, 2015). Non-inclusive climates negatively affect academic and athletic performance (Wolf-Wendel, Bajaj, & Spriggs, 2008; Turk, & Stokowski, 2016; Cunningham, 2015). The Athletic Equality Index (AEI) measures LGBTQ inclusion policies and practices in Power 5 conference athletic spaces. University fails to adequately meet 80% of the AEI criteria: non-discrimination policies, out or allied staff, accessible resources, collaboration with campus group(s), LGBTQ student-athlete group or initiative, pro LGBTQ equality campaign/statement, LGBTQ inclusive fan code of conduct, and guidelines for transgender inclusion (Athlete Ally, 2017). The AEI provides a tangible source of inclusion but does not measure daily efforts, or lack thereof, to foster inclusive environment for student-athletes. The NCAA recommends athletic departments offer support by developing inclusive policies, implementing educational initiatives and providing recourses to support LGBTQ student-athletes but these recommendations are unregulated and athletic departments ultimately determine the resources provided. Informed by Brewer’s (1991) model for Optimal Distinctiveness Theory (ODT), the purpose of this case study is to understand and describe inclusion of student-athletes who identify as sexual minority within an NCAA Division I athletic department. This study strives to answer the following research questions concerning inclusion of student-athletes who identify as sexual minority at an NCAA Division I institution: (1) How does University athletic department address the issue of inclusion? (2) How do student-athletes experience inclusion within University? Data collection includes: document review, semi-structured interviews, and reflexive journaling. This study explores the climate of inclusion for sexual minorities and how the athletic departments may better serve this particular population. Exploring and understanding athletic departments’ role in inclusion is crucial in the development, construction, and preservation of inclusion within NCAA Division I member institutions
The forgotten kids: Experiences of potential student-athletes at a postsecondary football preparatory school
The first preparatory institution was founded in 1635 to prepare elite men for public service, a role in the church, or admission to Harvard (Boyer, 1983). Nearly 400 years later, the objective of such institutions is no longer Harvard, but often an avenue for potential student-athletes (PSAs) to participate in collegiate sport (Thamel, 2007). The NCAA does not define nor regulate postgraduate preparatory institutions; however, Curran (2014) describes a preparatory institution (commonly referred to as prep schools) as a postgraduate institute that provides PSAs another year at a secondary institution prior to making the transition to college. Framed by Mincer’s (1958) model of Basic Human Capital, the purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of those attending or associated with one specific preparatory institution (X Academy). The first research question which explores prospective student-athletes choices to attend a preparatory institution revealed three final themes: (1) eligibility concerns, (2) athletic exposure and development, and (3) academic improvement. The second research question explores the experiences of those attending a preparatory institution also revealed three final themes: (1) focus and preparation, (2) melting pot, and (3) survival.  
Burden, screening, and treatment of depressive and anxious symptoms among women referred to cardiac rehabilitation: a prospective study
Background
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women. Women with CVD experience a greater burden of psychosocial distress than men, and practice guidelines promote screening in cardiac patients, especially women. The objectives herein were to describe the burden of psychosocial distress, extent of screening, forms of treatment, and whether receipt of treatment was related to psychosocial distress symptom severity at follow-up, among women.
Methods
Within a multi-center trial of women randomized to cardiac rehabilitation models, consenting participants were asked to complete surveys upon consent and 6 months later. Clinical data were extracted from charts. This study presents a secondary analysis of the surveys, including investigator-generated items assessing screening and treatment, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-2.
Results
Of the 128 (67.0%) participants with valid baseline and follow-up survey results, 48 (40.3%) self-reported that they recalled being screened, and of these, 10 (21.3%) recalled discussing the results with a health care professional. Fifty-six (43.8%) retained participants had elevated symptoms of psychosocial distress at baseline, of which 25 (44.6%) were receiving treatment. Regression analyses showed that treatment of psychosocial distress was not significantly associated with follow-up depressive symptoms, but was significantly associated with greater follow-up anxiety.
Conclusions
Findings reiterate the great burden of psychosocial distress among women with CVD. Less than half of patients with elevated symptoms were treated, and the treatment approaches appeared to insufficiently achieve symptom relief.This research was funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO), Grant-in-Aid #NA 6682

Neurocognitive therapeutics: from concept to application in the treatment of negative attention bias
There is growing interest in the use of neuroimaging for the direct treatment of mental illness. Here, we present a new framework for such treatment, neurocognitive therapeutics. What distinguishes neurocognitive therapeutics from prior approaches is the use of precise brain-decoding techniques within a real-time feedback system, in order to adapt treatment online and tailor feedback to individuals’ needs. We report an initial feasibility study that uses this framework to alter negative attention bias in a small number of patients experiencing significant mood symptoms. The results are consistent with the promise of neurocognitive therapeutics to improve mood symptoms and alter brain networks mediating attentional control. Future work should focus on optimizing the approach, validating its effectiveness, and expanding the scope of targeted disorders

Athletic Identity and Career Maturity of Women’s Basketball Student-Athletes
/sites/default/files/journals/4/articles/188/submission/thumbnail.jpgThis study explored the relationship between the athletic identity and career maturity of women’s basketball student-athletes. It specifically looked at the differences in athletic identity and career maturity based on the student-athlete’s level of competition, race, year in school, socioeconomic status, and professional athletic career aspirations. A convenience sample of 209 women’s basketball student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, as well as NAIA institutions participated in the study. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire along with the Career Maturity Inventory-Revised Attitude Scale and the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale. The findings suggest that within this sample of women’s basketball student-athletes, stronger identification with the athletic role is associated with lower levels of career maturity. Results also indicated that NCAA Division I student-athletes had significantly higher levels of athletic identity and significantly lower levels of career maturity than Division II student-athletes. Likewise, women’s basketball student-athletes that planned to pursue a professional basketball career (n = 76) displayed significantly higher levels of athletic identity and significantly lower levels of career maturity than those that did not (n = 133). As research suggests, less than 1% of women’s basketball student-athletes will compete professionally (NCAA, 2017a). However, based on the findings of the current study, 36.4% (n = 76) of the women’s basketball student-athletes sampled planned to pursue a professional basketball career upon graduating. The results of this study can assist individuals working with these student-athletes (e.g., coaches, counselors, professors) to intervene and ultimately assist women’s basketball student-athletes with preparation for life after sports.</p

Forgetting from lapses of sustained attention
When performing any task for an extended period of time, attention fluctuates between good and bad states. These fluctuations affect performance in the moment, but may also have lasting consequences for what gets encoded into memory. Experiment 1 establishes this relationship between attentional states and memory, by showing that subsequent memory for an item was predicted by a response time index of sustained attention (average response time during the three trials prior to stimulus onset). Experiment 2 strengthens the causal interpretation of this predictive relationship by treating the sustained attention index as an independent variable to trigger the appearance of an encoding trial. Subsequent memory was better when items were triggered from good vs. bad attentional states. Together, these findings suggest that sustained attention can have downstream consequences for what we remember, and they highlight the inferential utility of adaptive experimental designs. By continuously monitoring attention, we can influence what will later be remembered
I Know I Can Learn: The Perceptions of NCAA Division I Football College Athletes with Learning Disabilities
While 11% of all college students are reported to have a learning disability (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016), that percentage may be considerably higher when looking at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college athletes. Farrey (2009) reported as many as 54% of athletes on three revenue-producing teams at one institution had documented learning disabilities. Many students with learning disabilities are academically underprepared for the rigors of higher education and may be considered a vulnerable population within a higher education setting (Eckes & Ochoa, 2005). The purpose of this study is to examine Division I Football Bowl Series (FBS) college athletes’ with learning disabilities attitudes toward learning. Nine football college athletes with learning disabilities at a single Division I FBS institution participated in semi-structured interviews. Throughout the data, one major theme appeared consistently; learning competence, referring to the participants’ belief that they were capable and willing to learn. While many participants were not aware of their particular disability, it was clear the participants wanted to learn, felt they could learn, and had developed strategies to assist them in being successful in the classroom. The results of this study will allow those working with this particular population of college athletes to develop a greater understanding of their academic experiences, perceptions, and needs
