The Ethnic 'Other' in Ukrainian History Textbooks: The Case of Russia and the Russians

This paper examines portrayals of Russia and the Russians in two generations of Ukrainian history textbooks. It observes that the textbooks are highly condemning of Ukraine's main ethnic other in the guise of foreign ruler: the tsarist authorities and the Soviet regime are always attributed dubious and malicious intentions even if there is appreciation for some of their policies. By contrast, the books, certainly those of the second generation, refrain from presenting highly biased accounts of the ethnic other as a national group (i.e. Russians). Instances where negative judgements do fall onto Russians are counterbalanced by excerpts criticizing ethnic Ukrainians or highlighting conflicting interests within the Ukrainian ethnic group. The negative appraisal of the ethnic other as foreign ruler is clearly instrumental for the nation-building project as it sustains a discourse legitimating the existence of Ukraine as independent state. However, recent trends in history education, the paper concludes, suggest that the importance of nurturing patriotism as a national policy objective is diminishing

Banda Ace

    Get PDF
In 2004, we tested all patients with newly diagnosed tuberculosis (TB) for HIV in Kiev City. The results were compared to information from medical records of 2002, when co-infection prevalence was 6.3%. Of 968 TB patients, 98 (10.1%) were HIV infected. TB-HIV co-infection is increasing, especially in injecting drug users

Temperature induced structural and polarization features in BaFe12O19

We report the observation of a peculiar polarization behavior of BaFe12O19 in electric field where the linear polarization is detected at temperatures below 150 K whereas at higher temperatures a hysteresis-like polarization response is observed. At the same time, the performed neutron diffraction analysis shows no variations in crystal or magnetic structures with temperature. Based on the results of ab initio calculations we suggest the mechanism able to explain the experimentally observed behavior. We show that specific Fe atoms do not occupy the positions formally assigned to them by the conventional centrosymmetric P63/mmc (#194) space group (z = 0.25; 0.75) as these positions correspond to local energy maxima. Instead, these Fe atoms are shifted along the z-axis to positions z = 0.259 (0.241) and z = 0.759 (0.741), which correspond to local energy minima. To an inversion center move between these minima Fe atoms need to overcome an energy barrier. This barrier is rather insignificant for smaller volumes but it becomes larger for expanded volumes due to coupling between the displacements of these Fe atoms. Additionally, our analysis suggests that the non-centrosymmetric and polar P63mc (#186) space group could be appropriate for the description of the BaFe12O19 structure

Bi-substituted M-type hexaferrites, BaFe12-xBixO19 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 1.2), or Bi-BaM, were produced by the solid-state reactions. The correlation between the phase content, chemical composition, crystal structure features, and peculiarities of the magnetic properties of Bi-BaM was established using XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and VSM (vibrational sample magnetometry). XRD phase analysis made it possible to establish the limit of substitution of Fe3+ ions by Bi3+ ions. It was shown that at a low substitution level (x ≤ 0.3), no impurity phases were detected, and the samples are characterized by a single-phase state with the space group (SG) P63/mmc. As the degree of substitution (x ≥ 0.6) increases, the formation of impurity phases was observed, which can be explained by the difficulties of ion diffusion in the process of solid-phase synthesis as well as the formation of defects in the magnetoplumbite structure due to the large ionic radius of Bi3+. As impurity phases in the studied compositions (x ≥ 0.6) the following were noted: BiFeO3 (SG: Pnma); BiO2 (SG: Fm-3m); BaBi2O6 (SG: R-3); and Ba0.5Bi1.5O2.16 (SG: Im-3m). The content of the main phase (SG: P63/mmc) decreases from 95.11 to 88.27 vol% with an increase in x from 0.6 to 1.2, respectively. Analysis of SEM images showed the growth of particles up to 10 μm, depending on the concentration of bismuth oxide during hexaferrite synthase. The Bi-BaM magnetic characteristics were examined using VSM in the range of 3 T at 300 K. Due to the magnetic structure's frustration, with increased x a decrease in saturation magnetization (Ms) was found. There were two concentration diapasons with different speeds of Ms decrease. In the first diapason, the main contribution belong to the magnetic structure frustration in the frame of the main phase (P63/mmc) due to the long-range Fe-O-Fe exchange interaction weakening (under Bi substitution). In the second diapason, the main contribution belong to the impurity phase formation and decrease of the main magnetic phase concentration in samples

Indium-substituted strontium hexaferrites were prepared by the conventional solid-phase reaction method. Neutron diffraction patterns were obtained at room temperature and analyzed using the Rietveld methods. A linear dependence of the unit cell parameters is found. In3+ cations are located mainly in octahedral positions of 4fVI and 12 k. The average crystallite size varies within 0.84–0.65 μm. With increasing substitution, the TC Curie temperature decreases monotonically down to ~ 520 K. ZFC and FC measurements showed a frustrated state. Upon substitution, the average and maximum sizes of ferrimagnetic clusters change in the opposite direction. The Mr remanent magnetization decreases down to ~ 20.2 emu/g at room temperature. The Ms spontaneous magnetization and the keff effective magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant are determined. With increasing substitution, the maximum of the ε/ real part of permittivity decreases in magnitude from ~ 3.3 to ~ 1.9 and shifts towards low frequencies from ~ 45.5 GHz to ~ 37.4 GHz. The maximum of the tg(α) dielectric loss tangent decreases from ~ 1.0 to ~ 0.7 and shifts towards low frequencies from ~ 40.6 GHz to ~ 37.3 GHz. The low-frequency maximum of the μ/ real part of permeability decreases from ~ 1.8 to ~ 0.9 and slightly shifts towards high frequencies up to ~ 34.7 GHz. The maximum of the tg(δ) magnetic loss tangent decreases from ~ 0.7 to ~ 0.5 and shifts slightly towards low frequencies from ~ 40.5 GHz to ~ 37.7 GHz. The discussion of microwave properties is based on the saturation magnetization, natural ferromagnetic resonance and dielectric polarization types. © 2021, The Author(s).Investigations were performed under financial support from the Russian Science Foundation (Agreement No. 19-19-00694 of 06 May 2019)

Single-phase Sr2FeMoO6-d powders with various degrees of superstructural ordering of Fe/Mo cations and oxygen index d were obtained by solid-phase synthesis. With the help of X-ray phase analysis and neutron diffraction studies it has been established that the Fe-O1 and Mo-O2 values decrease with increasing oxygen content and the superstructural ordering of Fe/Mo cations increases, whereas the Fe-O2 and Mo-O1 bond lengths decrease, which leads to a decrease in the crystal lattice parameters and in the unit cell volume accordingly. This indicates an increase in the covalence of the bond along the axis (c), which stimulates the redistribution of the electron density from the (Fe/Mo-O2) layers to the (Fe/Mo-O1) layers and to an increase in the concentration of spin-polarized electrons with spins¯, which are located in the conduction band on Mo(t2g)¯ electron orbitals. When studying the dynamics of the change in oxygen non-stoichiometry and the degree of superstructural ordering it was found that the rate of desorption of oxygen is several times larger than the rate of Fe/Mo cations ordering.
