Examining Media Literacy Levels of Prospective Teachers
As in many other countries, following the 2007-2008 education year when media literacy courses began to be included in the curricula, media literacy has become one of the discussion topics among educators and decision makers in Turkey. Discussion topics related to media literacy have included who is going to give the media literacy courses, what qualifications will be sought out in media literacy education teachers, what will be included in the media literacy curriculum in terms of its content, and at what level the media literacy course will be given. The current study which aims to examine media literacy levels of prospective teachers utilized thesurvey method. The sample of the study included prospective teachers (480) attending Elementary School Education, Social Studies Education and Turkish Language Education departments in the Education Faculty at the Dumlupinar University in the 2008-2009 education year. The results of the study showed that prospective teachers have a low level of reaction to media messages, do not educate people around enough about the effects of media, but make use of different sources of media to gain information, and are cognizant of media literacy
İlköğretim Birinci Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Kalem Tutma Biçimleri ve Kavrama-Sıkıştırma Kuvvetlerinin Yazma Hızı ve Hatalarına Etkisi
This is a survey model descriptive study which aims at testing the impact of the way the first grade students in primary school hold the pencil, grip the pencil and the compressive strength on the writing speeds and mistakes. The survey has been made with the first grade students (n=412) in the primary schools located in the city center of Kütahya. According to the data obtained, it can be said that the pencil gripping style of the students is a kind which is supported with thumb, index and middle finger; there is low negative level meaning correlation between writing mistake point and compressive strength and there is low positive level meaning correlation between writing speed and gripping strength.İlköğretim birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin kalem tutma biçimleri, kavrama ve sıkıştırma kuvvetlerinin yazma hızı ve hatalarına etkisini test etmeyi amaçlayan bu çalışma tarama modelinde betimsel bir çalışmadır. Araştırma Kütahya il merkezinde bulunan ilköğretim okullarının birinci sınıf öğrencileriyle (n=412) yapılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre öğrencilerin tercih ettikleri kalem tutma şeklinin baş, işaret ve orta parmakla desteklenen tutuş şekli olduğu, yazma hata puanı ile kavrama ve sıkıştırma kuvveti arasında düşük negatif düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişkinin olduğu bulunmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra yazma hızı ile kavrama kuvveti arasında düşük pozitif düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişkinin olduğu söylenebilir
Metacognition, study habits and attitudes
This study is conducted to investigate the relationship between fifth grade students' metacognition levels, and their study habits and attitudes. Participants of the study consist of 221 students, 125 female and 96 male, enrolling to six public primary schools in Turkey. The results revealed that there is a medium positive relationship between metacognitive knowledge and skills and study habits (r=0.351, p<.05), study attitudes (r=0.415, p<.05) and study orientation (r=0.434, p<.05). Additionally, the results of the study showed that there is no significant relationship between metacognition and study habits and attitudes for low and medium achievers but, there is a significant relationship for high achievers. © IEJEE
