    Montmorillonite-anchored magnetite nanocomposite for recovery of ammonium from stormwater and its reuse in adsorption of Sc3+

    The treatment of stormwater to remove and recover nutrients has received increasing interest. The objective of this study was to develop a novel adsorbent that is easy to handle, has good adsorption capacity, and is economical to use. A novel nanocomposite of montmorillonite (MT)-anchored magnetite (Fe3O4) was synthesised by co-precipitation as an adsorbent for ammonium. The MT/Fe3O4 nanocomposite had pore sizes (3–13 nm) in the range of narrow mesopores. The dispersion of the anchored Fe3O4 was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nanocomposite exhibited higher affinity towards ammonium than the original MT. The Langmuir isotherm model was found to be the most suitable model to explain the ammonium adsorption behaviour of the nanocomposite. The maximum adsorption capacity for ammonium was 10.48 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism was a combination of ion exchange and electrostatic interaction. In an authentic stormwater sample, the synthesised adsorbent removed 64.2% of ammonium and reduced the amount of heavy metal contaminants including Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn. Furthermore, the ammonium loading on MT/Fe3O4 during adsorption functionalised the adsorbent surface. Additionally, the spent nanocomposite showed potential for rare earth elements (REEs) adsorption as a secondary application, especially for the selective adsorption of Sc3+.     Polyacrylonitrile-encapsulated amorphous zirconium phosphate composite adsorbent for Co, Nd and Dy separations

    Recycled Nd and Dy from the end-of-life NdFeB permanent magnet is an important supplement for the increasing demand of rare-earth elements. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop an environmentally friendly recycling method. Amorphous zirconium phosphate exhibits selective separation properties towards the ternary Co-Nd-Dy system, however, its powdery form limits development of scaled-up applications. We present an efficient amorphous ZrP/Polyacrylonitrile (am-ZrP/PAN) composite ion exchanger for uptake and separation of Nd, Dy and Co. The am-ZrP/PAN composite was synthesized and its structural, morphologic and acidic properties were investigated by various methods. X-ray tomography revealed rather evenly distributed am-ZrP in the PAN polymer matrix. The selectivity and ion-exchange kinetics of the am-ZrP/PAN composite were determined in relation to the individual elements. Due to dimethylformide (DMF) intercalation into the interlayer of ZrP, the uptake of Co, Nd and Dy increased 50% compared with that of the pristine am-ZrP. Column separation of Co, Nd and Dy from the Co-Nd-Dy ternary system was assessed by varying the feed concentration, loading degree, temperature, running speed and elution agent (HNO3) concentration. Finally, gradient elution was employed for Co, Nd and Dy separation from a simulated ternary leachate.     Cognitive Performance among Cognitively Healthy Adults Aged 30–100 Years

    Background/Aims: To detect cognitive decline in older adults, measures of verbal fluency and verbal memory are widely used. Less is known about performance in these measures in younger persons or according to education level and gender. We investigated cognitive performance according to age, education and gender among cognitively healthy adults aged 30-100 years. Methods: The study population comprised 4,174 cognitively healthy persons participating in the nationally representative Finnish Health 2011 survey. Cognitive assessment included verbal fluency, word list memory, word list recall and word list savings from the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease neuropsychological battery. Results: Total variance in the cognitive test performance explained by age, education and gender varied from 12.3 to 31.2%. A decreasing trend in cognitive performance existed in all subtests by advancing age, with differences appearing between 50 and 55 years. Persons with the highest-education level performed best for all measures. For the participants <55 years, education explained part of the variance, while age and gender did not. Conclusions: When assessing cognition, age and education should be accounted for in more detail in research and clinical practice. Additionally, the cohort effect and its potential impact on the renewal cycle of future normative values for cognitive tests should be considered. (C) 2019 The Author(s) Published by S.     Effect of porogen solvent on the synthesis of nickel ion imprinted polymer materials prepared by inverse suspension polymerization

    Ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) for nickel were synthesized by inverse suspension copoly-merization of vinylbenzyl iminodiacetic acid (VbIDA) with ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) in the presence of nickel(II) ions with various porogen solvents to study their impact on the IIPs properties. They were prepared with mixtures of acetonitrile and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), 50/50%v/v, for IIP-A/D and 2-methoxyethanol and DMSO, 50/50%v/v, for IIP-M/D. The structure and properties of these polymers were compared with those of IIP-D previously prepared with pure DMSO as porogen solvent. Although IIP-A/D and IIP-M/D were less porous than IIP-D, they presented better nickel adsorption properties and selectivity towards Zn2+, Co2+ and Pb2+. This is assumed to be the result of the stabilization of the ligand-metal complex during the polymerization process. Moreover, the nickel binding capacities of the prepared IIPs in competitive conditions are remarkably high (184 mu mol/g for IIP-D, 170 mu mol/g for IIP-A/D and 174 mu mol/g for IIP-M/D). The impact of the VbIDA chelating monomer was highlighted by comparing the adsorption properties of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and EDMA with NIP-D.     Anthocyanin-rich extract from purple potatoes decreases postprandial glycemic response and affects inflammation markers in healthy men

    Our recent clinical study suggested that polyphenol-rich purple potatoes lowered postprandial glycemia and insulinemia compared to yellow potatoes. Here, 17 healthy male volunteers consumed yellow potatoes with or without purple potato extract (PPE, extracted with water/ethanol/acetic acid) rich in acylated anthocyanins (152 mg) and other phenolics (140 mg) in a randomized cross-over trial. Ethanol-free PPE decreased the incremental area under the curve for glucose (p = 0.019) and insulin (p = 0.015) until 120 min after the meal, glucose at 20 min (p = 0.015) and 40 min (p = 0.004), and insulin at 20 min (p = 0.003), 40 min (p = 0.004) and 60 min (p = 0.005) after the meal. PPE affected some of the studied 90 inflammation markers after meal; for example insulin-like hormone FGF-19 levels were elevated at 240 min (p = 0.001). These results indicate that PPE alleviates postprandial glycemia and insulinemia, and affects postprandial inflammation.</p

    Effects of Anthocyanin Extracts from Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and Purple Potato (Solanum tuberosum L. var. ‘Synkeä Sakari’)on the Plasma Metabolomic Profile of Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats

    This study compared the effects of the nonacylated and acylated anthocyanin-rich extracts on plasma metabolic profiles of Zucker diabetic fatty rats. The rats were fed with the nonacylated anthocyanin extract from bilberries (NAAB) or the acylated anthocyanin extract from purple potatoes (AAPP) at daily doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg body weight for 8 weeks. 1H NMR metabolomics was used to study the changes in plasma metabolites. A reduced fasting plasma glucose level was seen in all anthocyanin-fed groups, especially in the groups fed with NAAB. Both NAAB and AAPP decreased the levels of branched-chain amino acids and improved lipid profiles. AAPP increased the glutamine/glutamate ratio and decreased the levels of glycerol and metabolites involved in glycolysis, suggesting improved insulin sensitivity, gluconeogenesis, and glycolysis. AAPP decreased the hepatic TBC1D1 and G6PC messenger RNA level, suggesting regulation of gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis. This study indicated that AAPP and NAAB affected the plasma metabolic profile of diabetic rats differently. </p
