Neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of neoadjuvant therapy (NT) in women with stage I–III breast cancer in Italy and whether it is influenced by biological characteristics, screening history, and geographic area. Methods: Data from the High Resolution Study conducted in 7 Italian cancer registries were used; they are a representative sample of incident cancers in the study period (2009–2013). Included were 3546 women aged <85 years (groups <50, 50–69, 70–64, and 75+) with stage I–III breast cancer at diagnosis who underwent surgery. Women were classified as receiving NT if they received chemotherapy, target therapy, and/or hormone therapy before the first surgical treatment. Logistic models were built to test the association with biological and contextual variables. Results: Only 8.2% of women (290 cases) underwent NT; the treatment decreases with increasing age (14.5% in age <50 and 2.2% in age 75+), is more frequent in women with negative receptors (14.8%), HER2-positive (15.7%), and triple-negative (15.6%). The multivariable analysis showed the probability of receiving NT is higher in stage III (odds ratio [OR] 3.83; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.83–5.18), luminal B (OR 1.87; 95% CI 1.27–2.76), triple-negatives (OR 1.88; 95% CI 1.15–3.08), and in symptomatic cancers (OR 1.98; 95% CI 1.13–3.48). Use of NT varied among geographic areas: Reggio Emilia had the highest rates (OR 2.29; 95% CI 1.37–3.82) while Palermo had the lowest (OR 0.41; 95% CI 0.24–0.68). Conclusions: The use of NT in Italy is limited and variable. There are no signs of greater use in hospitals with more advanced care
Trojan Horse as an indirect technique in nuclear astrophysics. Resonance reactions
The Trojan Horse method is a powerful indirect technique that provides
information to determine astrophysical factors for binary rearrangement
processes at astrophysically relevant energies by measuring
the cross section for the Trojan Horse reaction in
quasi-free kinematics. We present the theory of the Trojan Horse method for
resonant binary subreactions based on the half-off-energy-shell R matrix
approach which takes into account the off-energy-shell effects and initial and
final state interactions.Comment: 6 pages and 1 figur
Interface coupling in Au-supported MoS2–WS2 heterobilayers grown by pulsed laser deposition
Van der Waals heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising systems for engineering functional layered 2D materials with tailored properties. In this work, we study the growth of WS2/MoS2 and MoS2/WS2 heterobilayers by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) under ultra-high vacuum conditions. Using Au(111) as growth substrate, we investigated the heterobilayer morphology and structure at the nanoscale by in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy. Our experiments show that the heterostructure growth can be controlled with high coverage and thickness sensitivity by tuning the number of laser pulses in the PLD process. Raman spectroscopy complemented our investigation, revealing the effect of the interaction with the metallic substrate on the TMD vibrational properties and a strong interlayer coupling between the MoS2 and WS2 layers. The transfer of the heterobilayers on a silica substrate via a wet etching process shows the possibility to
decouple them from the native metallic substrate and confirms that the interlayer coupling is not substrate-dependent. This work highlights the potential of the PLD technique as a method to grow TMD heterostructures, opening to new perspectives in the synthesis of complex 2D layered materials
Direct Reactions with Exotic Nuclei, Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics
Intermediate energy Coulomb excitation and dissociation is a useful tool for
nuclear structure and astrophysics studies. Low-lying strength in nuclei far
from stability was discovered by this method. The effective range theory for
low-lying strength in one-neutron halo nuclei is summarized and extended to
two-neutron halo nuclei. This is of special interest in view of recent rather
accurate experimental results on the low-lying electric dipole strength in
Li. Another indirect approach to nuclear astrophysics is the Trojan
horse method. It is pointed out that it is a suitable tool to investigate
subthreshold resonances.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the Erice School on 'Radioactive

Genome-wide population structure, homozygosity, and heterozygosity patterns of Nero Siciliano pig in the framework of Italian and cosmopolitan breeds
Analysis of genomic data is becoming more and more common for the effective management of livestock breeding programmes, even in the case of local populations. In this work, the genome-wide data of Nero Siciliano pig breed were compared to that of wild boar, Italian local and cosmopolitan breeds to investigate its genetic structure, and runs of homozygosity (ROH) and heterozygosity patterns. The Nero Siciliano has been reported to have the highest rate of genetic diversity among the Italian breeds, and a genetic variability comparable to that of the cosmopolitan breeds. Analyses of genomic structure and relationships underlined its proximity to wild boar, and an internal substructure probably linked to different family lines. The breed showed a low value of inbreeding estimated from ROH, and the highest diversity index among the Italian breeds, even if lower than that of the cosmopolitans. Four ROH islands in three chromosomes (SSC8, SSC11, and SSC14) and one heterozygosity-rich region (SSC1) were identified in Nero Siciliano, highlighting genomic regions related to productive QTL. Across breeds, SSC8 and SSC14 were the chromosomes with most ROH islands, with Mora Romagnola and wild boar showing the highest level of autozygosity. Chromosomes SSC2, SSC6, SSC8 and SSC13 showed the majority of runs of heterozygosity regions, mainly found in the cosmopolitan pig breeds, which reported several genes associated with health-related QTL. The outlined results can help to better identify the genomic profile of this local breed in order to plan matings, maintain adequate internal diversity and exploit the production system
Determination of the photodisintegration reaction rates involving charged particles: systematical calculations and proposed measurements based on Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP)
Photodisintegration reaction rates involving charged particles are of
relevance to the p-process nucleosynthesis that aims at explaining the
production of the stable neutron-deficient nuclides heavier than iron. In this
study, the cross sections and astrophysical rates of (g,p) and (g,a) reactions
for about 3000 target nuclei with 10<Z<100 ranging from stable to proton
dripline nuclei are computed. To study the sensitivity of the calculations to
the optical model potentials (OMPs), both the phenomenological Woods-Saxon and
the microscopic folding OMPs are taken into account. The systematic comparisons
show that the reaction rates, especially for the (g,a) reaction, are
dramatically influenced by the OMPs. Thus the better determination of the OMP
is crucial to reduce the uncertainties of the photodisintegration reaction
rates involving charged particles. Meanwhile, a gamma-beam facility at ELI-NP
is being developed, which will open new opportunities to experimentally study
the photodisintegration reactions of astrophysics interest. Considering both
the important reactions identified by the nucleosynthesis studies and the
purpose of complementing the experimental results for the reactions involving
p-nuclei, the measurements of six (g,p) and eight (g,a) reactions based on the
gamma-beam facility at ELI-NP and the ELISSA detector for the charged particles
detection are proposed, and the GEANT4 simulations are correspondingly
performed. The minimum required energies of the gamma-beam to measure these
reactions are estimated. It is shown that the direct measurements of these
photonuclear reactions within the Gamow windows at T_9=2.5 for p-process are
fairly feasible and promising at ELI-NP. The expected experimental results will
be used to constrain the OMPs of the charged particles, which can eventually
reduce the uncertainties of the reaction rates for the p-process
nucleosynthesis.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Phys. Rev. C accepte
The durability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites under hydrothermal ageing
Studies on fibre reinforced composites are now receiving greater attention. Industrial applications have been successful in areas like aerospace, automobile, marine, construction and sporting goods. The first generation of epoxy resins for use in carbon fibre composites are able to achieve optimized high stiffness modules and high heat resistance by a high crosslink density, reached through thermal curing. However, these formulations can be very toxic and brittle with low crack resistance, which was a major disadvantage for structural applications. In the last years the use of ionizing radiation as alternative to thermal curing has been proposed as an environmentally friendly process. Furthermore, in order to enhance toughness mechanical requirements for their applications, the formulation generally consists of blends of epoxy resins and engineering thermoplastics. In terms of durability (service life and reliability), in these materials it depends on different environmental conditions (temperature, moisture, etc.), and it is very important to know how their properties are modified after the exposure to different temperature and moisture absorption cycles. In this work carbon fibre composites produced by ionizing radiation induced curing of the epoxy based matrices have been subjected to thermal and moisture absorption ageing and the influence of these treatments on the thermal and mechanical properties has been investigated through dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and mechanical fracture toughness tests
Nuclear astrophysics and resonant reactions: Exploring the threshold region with the Trojan Horse Method
Resonant reactions play an important role in astrophysics as they might significantly enhance the cross section with respect to the direct reaction contribution and alter the nucleosynthetic flow. Moreover, resonances bear information about states in the intermediate compound nucleus formed in the reaction. However, nuclear reactions in stars take place at energies well below [Formula: see text] MeV and the Coulomb barrier, exponentially suppressing the cross section, and the electron screening effect, due to the shielding of nuclear charges by atomic electrons, make it very difficult to provide accurate input data for astrophysics. Therefore, indirect methods have been introduced; in particular, we will focus on the Trojan Horse Method. We will briefly discuss the theory behind the method, to make clear its domain of applicability, the advantages and the drawbacks, and two recent cases will be shortly reviewed: the [Formula: see text] reaction, which is an important fluorine destruction channel in the proton-rich outer layers of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and the [Formula: see text] reactions, which play a critical role in astrophysics to understand stellar burning scenarios in carbon-rich environments
