Carcass Production and Meat Tenderness Characteristics of Culled Quail Fed with Azolla microphylla Flour Supplemented Basal Feed
The aim of this research was to understand the effect of Azolla microphylla flour supplementation in the basal feed on carcass production and meat tenderness characteristics of culled quail. The materials used in this research were 100 culled quails at 48-week-old age and commercial quail feed. The research was conducted as an experimental research and used Completely Randomized Design. Four treatments were done in this research, which was basal feed without Azolla microphylla flour supplementation; basal feed supplemented with 1% Azolla microphylla flour; basal feed supplemented with 2% Azolla microphylla flour, and basal feed supplemented with 3% Azolla microphylla flour. Each treatment was done 4 times with each fed into 5 quails. The observed variables include carcass production (carcass percentage, breast meat percentage, thigh meat percentage, back meat percentage, and wing meat percentage) and meat tenderness characteristics (meat fat content, collagen content, pH and meat tenderness). The obtained data were then analyzed by analysis of variance and if the result showed a significant effect, further analysis will be done by honestly significant difference test. The analysis of variance showed that Azolla microphylla flour supplementation showed significant effect (P0.05) on the thigh meat percentage, back meat percentage, wings meat percentage and meat pH. The research concluded that Azolla microphylla flour supplementation in the basal feed will increase carcass production and meat tenderness of culled quail meat at maximum 2% of supplementation level.  Â
Study on Heat Stress Behavior and Blood H/L Ratio of Ducks Fed Diets Containing Mix Strains of Probiotics in Commercial Farms
An experiment has been conducted with the purpose of examining the effect of two kinds of probiotic on the behavior and blood H/L ratio of local ducks kept in commercial farms. The study was conducted in collaboration with the âBerkah Abadiâ duck farmer group which keeps the bird under an intensive dry system. The intensive system refers to the ordinary way done by the farmers in which ducks were confined around the farmerâs village with a closed fence so the birds had no access to the outside area, and the amount of feed provided could be controlled and measured. The location was in the coastal area of Tegal City as one of the most famous duck centers in Indonesia. The materials used were 13.4+1.3 months old local laying ducks which were reared by the farmer group. The study used a Completely Randomized Design with treatments consisting of 3 doses of P and P+ probiotics respectively. P contained Lactobacillus sp. combined with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, whereas P+ comprised Lactobacillus sp., Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. There were 6 treatment units which were replicated 4 times, so in total there were 24 flocks. Each flock had 50 female ducks; therefore this study involved 1,200 ducks. The treatments were applied each morning, and mixed thoroughly in duck ration. Data collected were heat stress-related behavior, body temperature, and H/L ratio. It was concluded that P and P+ had similar effects on the behaviour and H/L ratio of local ducks kept under commercial management.
Blood Profile and Carcass Production of Broiler Chickens Given Nucleotides and Turmeric Extract in Feed
Broiler chickens are birds that grow very fast, but have low body resistance and are easily stressed. This study aimed to examine the effect of nucleotide and turmeric extract (Curcuma longa Linn) on blood profile (erythrocytes, hemoglobin and leukocytes) and carcass production (weight of carcass, weight of breast, thighs and wings) in broiler chickens. Data was collected using a completely randomized design with 7 treatments consisting of Control: basal feed + antibiotic Bacitracin Zinc 0.1 g/day; N 0 : basal feed; N 1 : basal feed + turmeric extract 600 mg/kg feed; N 2 : basal feed + nucleotide 250 mg/kg feed; N 3 : basal feed + nucleotide 250 mg/kg feed + turmeric extract 600 mg/kg feed; N 4 : basal feed + nucleotide 500 mg/kg feed; N 5 : basal feed + nucleotide 500 mg/kg feed + turmeric extract 600 mg/kg feed. The results showed that nucleotide supplementation and turmeric extract had no significant effect on weight of carcass, weight of breast, thighs and wings, hemoglobin, erythrocytes and leukocytes of broiler. The use of nucleotide and turmeric extract could not improve the blood profile of broiler
