    Measuring The Perceived Effectiveness Of Five Selected Professional Courses Taken By Alumni Theology Majors And How They Are Related To Selective Demographics: A Mixed Methods Study

    Problem The study was prompted by the need for the evaluation of current theological educational programs for preparing students to meet the many challenges of pastoral ministry in a rapidly changing world. However, to date there has been little published research addressing the effectiveness of undergraduate theological education. Furthermore, changes implemented in the theological education program at Southern Adventist University (Southern) have not been evaluated for their effectiveness for ministerial job preparedness. Method This descriptive study measured the perceived effectiveness of five professional courses taught in the undergraduate theological educational program at Southern for ministerial job preparedness. A parallel mixed methods design, same sample, involved collecting a multiple-question survey with both Likert-style and open-ended questions from a convenience sample of Southern theology alumni. In addition, data from exit interviews conducted by the Dean of the School of Religion were reviewed for predictors of perceived effectiveness for ministerial job preparedness. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, posteriori word coding, and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. Results Eighty-one percent of theology alumni surveyed indicated that the education they received at Southern equipped them for ministry. The alumni responses identified several positive aspects of the current theological educational program at Southern, including hands-on, practical components, and courses taught by professors experienced in pastoral ministry. Suggestions for improvement included condensing the Personal Evangelism course to one semester, and the addition of lectures or courses on conflict resolution and basic counseling skills. Conclusion The findings suggest that Southern is effectively preparing its theology majors for pastoral ministry through the five professional courses studied in this research. It is recommended that regular alumni surveys be conducted as part of curricula development and evaluation

    For the atomic clocks used in the National Bureau of Standards Time Scales, an adequate model is the superposition of white FM, random walk FM, and linear frequency drift for times longer than about one minute. The model was tested on several clocks using maximum likelihood techniques for parameter estimation and the residuals were acceptably random. Conventional diagnostics indicate that additional model elements contribute no significant improvement to the model even at the expense of the added model complexity

    Soil parent material was found to affect the specific gravity of northern red oak wood (Quercus rubra L.). The unextracted specific gravity of wood grown on limestone soils was 0.597 and that of wood grown on sandstone soils was 0.581. Site quality within a soil type had no significant effect. The relationship was independent of both rate of growth and latewood percentage

    Three methods were devised to measure the hardness of small wood samples: a sanding test, a diamond point indentation test, and a saw blade tooth deformity test. Based on step-wise multiple regression analysis with 19 and with five important independent variables, the sanding test was best, followed by the indentation test. The saw blade test gave poor results and was discarded. The order of important independent variables among the four plots analyzed individually showed a nearly perfect relationship with the sanding test, but no consistent order of the variables among plots for the indentation test. Again this indicated that the sanding test was best

    Multi-layered Ruthenium-modified Bond Coats for Thermal Barrier Coatings

    Diffusional approaches for fabrication of multi-layered Ru-modified bond coats for thermal barrier coatings have been developed via low activity chemical vapor deposition and high activity pack aluminization. Both processes yield bond coats comprising two distinct B2 layers, based on NiAl and RuAl, however, the position of these layers relative to the bond coat surface is reversed when switching processes. The structural evolution of each coating at various stages of the fabrication process has been and subsequent cyclic oxidation is presented, and the relevant interdiffusion and phase equilibria issues in are discussed. Evaluation of the oxidation behavior of these Ru-modified bond coat structures reveals that each B2 interlayer arrangement leads to the formation of α-Al 2 O 3 TGO at 1100°C, but the durability of the TGO is somewhat different and in need of further improvement in both cases

    Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides Large Colony (LC) type is a pathogen of goats causing contagious agalactia and respiratory disease, found on all continents where small ruminants are kept. It shares close genetic characteristics with M. mycoides subsp. capri. Substrate oxidation by 22 strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides LC from nine countries was compared with that of eight strains of M. mycoides subsp. capri from five countries. There was considerable similarity in the substrates used, but substrate saturation coefficients (Ks) varied for different substrates. Substrate utilization patterns and Ks values did not (1) significantly differentiate the LC strains from each other, (2) show any correlation with geographical origin, or (3) distinguish the LC strains from the capri strains. These results support previous studies justifying the reclassification of these subspecies as a single species
