Under the conditions of mediatization as the most important factor shaping modernity along with globalization, individualization and commercialization, an individual receives the nomination of a ”media man” on and acquires new functions in the development of media civilization. The ”media man” acts as a new kind of not only “the product” and “the consumer”, but also “the producer” and “the translator” of works of screen culture, including screen documentaries. General scientific and special scientific methods of research are used for writing the article. The article presents the results of systematization, understanding and analysis of the theoretical and historical scientific literature on mediatization and documentary films, as well as empirical observations of the practice of the Russian documentary. Prospects of the development of the documentary technologies in the changing conditions, including – within a new type of screen documentary – interactive and collaborative documentary cinema – idoc are outlined. Keywords: media, “media man”, media culture, screen culture, traditional, interactive and collaborative documentary

Specific Features of Sex Determination in Birds on the Example of Gallus gallus domesticus

The chapter is devoted to the consideration of sex determination in birds. The appearance of heteromorphic sex chromosomes (birds) has led to the emergence of some specific W chromosomal signal, which provides estrogen control of the development of a heterogametic sex. At present, two hypotheses about sex determination in birds compete. One of these hypotheses considers the number of Z chromosomes as a key sex-determining factor, while the other hypothesis supposes the presence in W chromosome of the key gene controlling ovarian development or suppressing the appearance of testes. Into the modern scheme of the genetic control of sex determination in birds (practically within the hypothesis of dose compensation), an epigenetic mechanism was added. The appearance of gonads in birds is most likely determined by sex hormones and to the greatest extent by estrogen under the control of W chromosome. It is desirable to pay attention to noncoding RNAs, their connection with the W chromosome and their role in bird sex determination

Comparison of Sex Determination in Vertebrates (Nonmammals)

The chapter is devoted to the consideration of sex determination in vertebrate groups of nonmammalians: fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Attention is drawn to the fact that all these groups of animals, unlike mammals, are implemented hormonal control options for primary sex determination, and there is a possibility of sex reversion. Determination of gonadal development in vertebrates like testis or ovary was initially controlled mainly by sex hormones (fish and amphibians). Later, various sex determining genes were involved in this process. The system was quite plastic and was able to respond to changes in external conditions (reptiles). The appearance of heteromorphic sex chromosomes (birds) has led to the emergence of some specific W chromosomal signal, which provides estrogen control of the development of a heterogametic sex. In mammals, the control of the primary determination of sex (the appearance of the gonad) becomes purely genetic, and the role of sex hormones is reduced to the differentiation of testis or ovaries

Osmotic compression of droplets of hard rods: A computer simulation study

Get PDF
By means of computer simulations we study how droplets of hard, rod-like particles optimize their shape and internal structure under the influence of the osmotic compression caused by the presence of spherical particles that act as depletion agents. At sufficiently high osmotic pressures the rods that make up the drops spontaneously align to turn them into uniaxial nematic liquid crystalline droplets. The nematic droplets or "tactoids" that are formed this way are not spherical but elongated, resulting from the competition between the anisotropic surface tension and the elastic deformation of the director field. In agreement with recent theoretical predictions we find that sufficiently small tactoids have a uniform director field, whilst large ones are characterized by a bipolar director field. From the shape and director-field transformation of the droplets we are able to estimate the surface anchoring strength and an average of the elastic constants of the hard-rod nematic

Supramolecular electron transfer-based switching involving pyrrolic macrocycles. A new approach to sensor development?

This Feature focuses on pyrrolic macrocycles that can serve as switches via energy- or electron transfer (ET) mechanisms. Macrocycles operating by both ground state (thermodynamic) and photoinduced ET pathways are reviewed and their ability to serve as the readout motif for molecular sensors is discussed. The aim of this article is to highlight the potential utility of ET in the design of systems that perform molecular switching or logic functions and their applicability in chemical sensor development. The conceptual benefits of this paradigm are illustrated with examples drawn mostly from the authors' laboratoriesThe work in Austin was supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (grant CHE-1402004 to J.L.S.) and the Robert A. Coronary heart disease (CHD) and its complications occupy the leading place in the pattern of the causes of untimely death in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Objective: to study the incidence, pattern, and specific features of CHD in patients with RA. Patients and methods. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 257 patients with RA (ARA, 1987). The patients’ mean age was 55.4±11.6 years; RA duration was 14.7years (range 2—20 years). Results. The incidence of CHD in RA was as much as 45.9% (n = 118), including 52.5% (n = 62) for typical angina pectoris on exertion; 25.4% (n = 30) and 22.1% (n = 26) for silent ischemia and arrhythmias, respectively. A high proportion of vertebrogenic cardialgias (48.8%; n = 100) were noted in those who complained of heart pain. The authors identified traditional risk factors, such as hypertension (OR = 12.1), smoking (OR = 10.2), early menopause (OR = 3.6), decreased glomerular filtration rate (OR = 3.5), cardiovascular heredity (OR = 3.1), overweight (OR = 2.5), a heart rate of more than 70 beats/min (OR = 2.3), atherogenic dyslipidemia (OR = 2.3), hyperglycemia (OR = 2.1), and age (OR = 1.7). Along with those, the authors also ascertained CHD predictors associating with chronic inflammation consequences: use of glucocorticoids (OR = 5.0), concomitant anemia as a common complication of RA (OR = 4.7), high DAS 28 scores (OR = 3.7), visual analog scale pain scores of > 50 mm (OR = 2.6), and RA duration of >10 years (OR = 2.2). Conclusion. The specific features of CHD in RA include the frequent detection of arrhythmias and silent ischemia. The importance of the degree of inflammatory activity along with the traditional risk factors of CHD is apparent

The article is devoted to the documentary films about creative people, demonstrated on television, on festival screens and on the Internet. Famous personalities are favorite TV characters. However, TV documentaries look like programs rather than films. And the festival films, demonstrating individual paths to the on-screen disclosure of unique heroes, are inaccessible to the general public. Under these conditions, the Internet helps to draw attention to high-quality documentary films

Taming C60 fullerene: Tuning intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer process with subphthalocyanines

Two subphthalocyanine-C60 conjugates have been prepared by means of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of (perfluoro) or hexa(pentylsulfonyl) electron deficient subphthalocyanines to C60. Comprehensive assays regarding the electronic features-in the ground and excited state-of the resulting conjugates revealed energy and electron transfer processes upon photoexcitation. Most important is the unambiguous evidence-in terms of time-resolved spectroscopy-of an ultrafast oxidative electron transfer evolving from C60 to the photoexcited subphthalocyanines. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of an intramolecular oxidation of C60 within electron donor-acceptor conjugates by means of only photoexcitationFinancial support from the MICINN and MEC, Spain (CTQ- 2011-24187/BQU and PRI-PIBUS-2011-1128) is acknowledged.
