    Depolarizing collisions with hydrogen: neutral and singly ionized alkaline earths

    Depolarizing collisions are elastic or quasielastic collisions that equalize the populations and destroy the coherence between the magnetic sublevels of atomic levels. In astrophysical plasmas, the main depolarizing collider is neutral hydrogen. We consider depolarizing rates on the lowest levels of neutral and singly ionized alkaly-earths Mg I, Sr I, Ba I, Mg II, Ca II, and Ba II, due to collisions with H. We compute ab initio potential curves of the atom-H system and solve the quantum mechanical dynamics. From the scattering amplitudes we calculate the depolarizing rates for Maxwellian distributions of colliders at temperatures T <10000 K. A comparative analysis of our results and previous calculations in the literature is done. We discuss the effect of these rates on the formation of scattering polarization patterns of resonant lines of alkali-earths in the solar atmosphere, and their effect on Hanle effect diagnostics of solar magnetic fields.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures.     Portable system for capturing images of the sclera

    For many years in México and the world there is the tendency to improve the health of people, with emphasis on prevention and early detection, one of the most common examples is detection of breast cancer, if it is detected early it is curable. This paper proposes a system for digital image capturing, principally for the detection of the sclera (the white part of the eye), because not are databases available for sclera analysis, only for iris or pupil. The device must be of moderate cost and small size to perform a self-examination in a habitual place for people, can be their home, and were used recycled and low cost materials. It should be noted that the main purpose it is to capture images as uniform as possible, and thereby in the subsequent works, the detection of the sclera is less complicated

    Production of recombinant proteins in E. coli by the heat inducible expression system based on the phage lambda pL and/or pR promoters

    The temperature inducible expression system, based on the pL and/or pR phage lambda promoters regulated by the thermolabile cI857 repressor has been widely use to produce recombinant proteins in prokariotic cells. In this expression system, induction of heterologous protein is achieved by increasing the culture temperature, generally above 37°C. Concomitant to the overexpression of heterologous protein, the increase in temperature also causes a variety of complex stress responses. Many studies have reported the use of such temperature inducible expression system, however only few discuss the simultaneous stress effects caused by recombinant protein production and the up-shift in temperature. Understanding the integral effect of such responses should be useful to develop improved strategies for high yield protein production and recovery. Here, we describe the current status of the heat inducible expression system based on the pL and/or pR λ phage promoters, focusing on recent developments on expression vehicles, the stress responses at the molecular and physiological level that occur after heat induction, and bioprocessing factors that affect protein overexpression, including culture operation variables and induction strategies

    Seguimiento y caracterización del ambiente térmico de edificaciones especiales: caso de estudio en porquerizas ubicadas en Palmira, Colombia

    One branch of civil engineering is construction engineering, geared primarily towards humans. However, this branch also includes buildings designed for animals called animal housing (dwellings or shelters or corrals). Like physical spaces for humans, animal housing requires sufficient conditions for an occupation that guarantees the performance of indoor activities pleasantly and comfortably. One of the parameters for characterizing and classifying the penned livestock farm environment is the thermal comfort range that reflects the indoor temperature behavior for animal welfare, together with other climatic elements such as relative humidity. This research carried out fieldwork to evaluate the thermal environment of pigpens located in Palmira, Colombia, in the time&nbsp;range between 07:00 and 21:00 hours. Using thermometers and hygrometers, we recorded and analyzed the indoor temperature behavior within the thermal comfort range associated with relative humidity for the well-being of pigs. The records made it possible to calculate humidity and temperature&nbsp;index and humidity and black globe temperature index. According to the results, the pig rearing environment was classified as critical for breeding pigs and newborn piglets, suggesting the use of controlled environment systems in pig facilities. In conclusion, monitoring the climatic environment by criteria that combine air temperature and relative humidity is a useful tool for planning pig facilities.Una rama de la ingeniería civil es la ingeniería de la construcción, orientada en principio a los seres humanos. Sin embargo, también esta rama abarca otras edificaciones especiales para animales, denominadas alojamientos pecuarios. Estos alojamientos requieren de condiciones adecuadas que garanticen el desarrollo de actividades internas de manera agradable y cómoda. Uno de los parámetros para caracterizar y clasificar el ambiente de explotación pecuaria estabulada es la franja de comodidad térmica que refleja el comportamiento de la temperatura interna dentro del rango de bienestar animal y permite asociar otros elementos como la humedad relativa. Esta investigación desarrolló un trabajo de campo cuya finalidad fue evaluar el ambiente térmico en el rango horario comprendido entre las 07:00 y 21:00 horas, en una porqueriza ubicada en Palmira. En estos términos se registró y se analizó el comportamiento de la temperatura interna dentro de la franja de comodidad térmica asociada a la humedad relativa para las condiciones de bienestar de los cerdos usando termómetros e higrómetros. Los registros permitieron calcular los índices de temperatura y humedad, y de temperatura de globo negro. De acuerdo con los resultados, el ambiente de crianza de los cerdos se clasificó como crítico para las edades de lechones al nacimiento y reproductores, para lo cual se sugiere el uso de sistemas de ambiente controlado en las instalaciones porcinas. En conclusión, el seguimiento del ambiente climático con criterios que combinen la temperatura del aire y la humedad relativa es una herramienta útil en la planificación de las instalaciones porcinas

    Nuevas direcciones empíricas en la investigación e innovación de tecnología educativa para la evaluación del aprendizaje en línea: una aproximación conexionista

    RESUMEN De una muestra de 758 participantes se obtuvieron redes conceptuales sobre diferentes dominios del conocimiento. Modelamiento matemático y computacional permitió determinar comportamiento de un esquema mental en cada dominio. Con palabras centrales a los esquemas de los participantes, se implementaron estudios de facilitación semántica que demuestran la existencia de un nuevo fenómeno cognitivo: facilitación esquemática. Éste permite ver el efecto del comportamiento de un esquema sobre la organización conceptual del lexicón humano. Esto, además, permite identificar la existencia de un esquema dado un aprendizaje sólo cuando está integrado en la memoria. Veinte índices de cambio de organización conceptual no disponibles por métodos tradicionales de evaluación del aprendizaje pueden obtenerse una vez que se ha adquirido un esquema de conocimiento. Finalmente, se propone la innovación en tecnología educativa, implementando una red neural simulada que identifica si un estudiante integró o no en su memoria a largo plazo un nuevo conocimiento al usar el efecto de facilitación esquemática. ABSTRACT Semantic knowledge maps of different knowledge domains were obtained from a sample of 758 participants. Mathematical and computational modelling of conceptual organization domains allowed the identification of schemata behavior for each domain. By using schema related words from this cognitive modelling, semantic priming studies were performed to compare associative, categorical and nonrelated word latencies to schema related word pair latencies. Results identified a new cognitive phenomenon: Schemata priming. This allows the identification of schemata behavior effects over conceptual organization in the human lexicon after learning a schema. Moreover, this empowers identification of a learned schema when it has been integrated in long term memory. At least 20 conceptual organization indexes, not reachable by traditional methods to asses learning in a classroom, can be obtained after acquiring a learning schema. Finally, a connectionist neural network was implemented capable of identifying if a student has learned a topic by using only the Schemata priming effect. Implications to innovation inside educational technology are presented

    Formative E-Assessment of Schema Acquisition in the Human Lexicon as a Tool in Adaptive Online Instruction

    This chapter presents a comprehensive method of implementing e-assessment in adaptive e-instruction systems. Specifically, a neural net classifier capable of discerning whether a student has integrated new schema-related concepts from course content into her/his lexicon is used by an expert system with a database containing natural mental representations from course content obtained from students and teachers for adapting e-instruction. Mental representation modeling is used to improve student modeling. Implications for adaptive hypermedia systems and hypertext-based instructions are discussed.     Iniciando la segunda década del siglo XXI, la situación que guarda la salud-enfermedad-atención en la población del estado de Chiapas observa atributos de mayor complejidad respecto a la de dos décadas anteriores. Resulta indudable que los actuales cambios sociales matizan con acentuada intensidad los componentes del bienestar humano que pretenden describirse, sin embargo, conviene recordar que la salud humana no es más que el resultado de la interacción de sus determinantes1 tanto distales como proximales, en el actual modelo dominante de explicación del fenómeno. Es por ello que cobra particular relevancia la asociación con su contraparte, la enfermedad y se conceda énfasis a la atención médica, por consecuencia. Como parte de la descripción debe reconocerse que subyace en cada componente la idea de contradicción, que no es más que la disonancia entre la realidad percibida y los discursos oficiales; entre las políticas económicas que pretenden lograr el desarrollo y la mayor carga de enfermedad, bajo el supuesto de que a mayor desarrollo habría mayor bienestar y calidad de vida en los grupos sociales. Por lo anterior, este material se organiza en los tres grandes ejes que otorgan título al trabajo, iniciando con la salud y sus determinantes, continúa con la enfermedad y por último, la atención médica, dentro del modelo oficial; esta lógica obedece al propósito de conferir la fundamentación para el rediseño curricular de una licenciatura en Medicina. Este apartado describe las principales características de Chiapas con relación a los problemas de salud, por su complejidad se consideraron en particular dos grandes rubros: la marginación y la multietnicidad.
