The present work deals with the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of the blanket layer of the old railway trackbed. The main aim is to check the operation of the trackbed without drainage and to optimize the works of modernization of old railway in cutting. Firstly, identification tests were carried out on materials taken from the site of Sénissiat. The results showed that the blanket layer soil of this site is well graded from 0 to 63 mm and has a very high density (d = 2.39 Mg/m3). Secondly, an infiltration column of 300 mm in diameter were developed to study the hydraulic behaviour of the blanket layer. A low hydraulic conductivity (ks 2.2x10-7 m/s) of this layer was estimated according to the experimental results. Thirdly, an experimental study on the mechanical behaviour of the blanket layer was performed. This study shows a significant effect of the water content on the mechanical behaviour of the blanket layer. A permanent deformation model accounting for the influence of loading cycles, loading level and hydric state was elaborated based on the experimental results. Finally, the measurements of suction, temperature and weather parameters were carried out in a cutting without drainage at the site of Moulin Blanc to complete the study of the behaviour of the trackbed without drainage. A global analysis of the laboratory results with in-situ measurements shows that the decision regarding the setup of the drainage system required to establish justifications showing limited effects of the water content, based on a in-depth study on the water cycle for each site concernedLe présent travail étudie le comportement couplé hydromécanique de la couche intermédiaire des plates-formes ferroviaires anciennes.

International audienceIn order to better understand the heave observed on the railway roadbed of the French high-speed train (TGV) at Chabrillan in southern France, the swelling behaviour of the involved expansive clayey marl taken from the site by coring was investigated. The aim the study is to analyse the part of heave induced by the soil swelling. First, the swell potential was determined by flooding the soil specimen in an oedometer under its in-situ overburden stress. On the other hand, in order to assess the swell induced by the excavation undertaken during the construction of the railway, a second method was applied. The soil was first loaded to its in situ overburden stress existing before the excavation. It was then flooded and unloaded to its current overburden stress (after the excavation). The swell induced by this unloading was considered. Finally, the experimental results obtained were analyzed, together with the results from other laboratory tests performed previously and the data collected from the field monitoring. This study allowed estimating the heave induced by soil swelling. Subsequently, the part of heave due to landslide could be estimated which corresponds to the difference between the monitored heave and the swelling heave

30-37Homalomena is a genus of the Araceae family which contains several remedies used extensively in traditional Vietnamese medicine. H. pierreana is a rare plant species of Homalomena genus and found only in Phu Quoc National Park, Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam. Therefore, the number of studies about this species is limited and the bioactivity of this species is still unknown. In this study, the chemical composition of essential oils was investigated which was isolated from leaves and rhizomes of H. pierreana at the first time by GC-MS. Eight and twelve compounds were identified from the essential oils of rhizomes and leaves, respectively. The major component from both the rhizomes and the leaves was aromadendrene (44 and 48%, respectively). Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of essential oils collected from leaves and rhizomes of H. pierreana was investigated and it was observed that the essential oil of rhizomes could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while the essential oil of leaves exhibited an inhibitory effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.</em

This study investigated the chemical components and bioactivities of acetone leaf extracts of nine Annonaceae plants collected in the Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve, Vietnam. A total of 182 constituents were identified, with linolenic acid, diaeudesmin, germacrene D, 1-octadecenoic acid, 8-(3-octyl-2-oxiranyl)-1-octanol, oleic acid, and phenylmethyl ester being the major compounds. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was evaluated using a disc diffusion assay. Eight of the nine extracts, except for the Mitrephora thorelii extract, showed an inhibition effect against Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined using DPPH assay, and the cytotoxic activity was deter mined using SRB assay. The results showed that the acetone extracts of Artabotrys hexapetalus, Uvularia grandiflora, Polyalthia luensis, Xylopia pierrei, Sphaerocoryne affinis, Desmos cochinchinensis, Uvaria littoralis, Mitrephora thorelii, and Goniothalamus touranensis had significant activity with IC50 for the DPPH radical scavenging activity ranging from 18.56 to 702.33 μg/mL, and the IC50 for the cytotoxic effects ranged from 5.39 to 251.77 μg/mL. Overall, the results obtained provide experimental evidence for the potential use of these plants in medicine and other related fields

Abstract

Background

Surveys in Vietnam have indicated that wasting and stunting have been prevalent among children, but the country is undergoing rapid socio-economic changes and little has been known about the relative situation in the different areas of the country. In 2006, the WHO introduced new growth standards applicable to all infant and child populations, which facilitates for improved assessments of the prevalence of growth impairment, independent of time, place and ethnicity. The aim of our study was to assess the growth of singleton infants delivered at term in three main birth clinics in the Khanh Hoa province in Vietnam by using the new WHO standards as reference, and the association between growth and some maternal, birth and health factors.

Methods

A cohort of 237 singleton infants born in the period May-July 2005 in three main delivery clinics in the Khanh Hoa province were observed prospectively. Their anthropometrical measures a year later were compared to the WHO sex-specific growth standards for weight-for-age, length-for-age, weight-for-length, and BMI-for-age. These measures were analysed as dependent outcomes using multiple linear regression models including the following independent factors: urban vs. rural birth, 1-minute Apgar score, weight and length at birth, duration of lactation, ever had diarrhoea, dengue fever, pneumonia or dysentery, and maternal age, height, gestational duration and parity.

Results

Compared to the standard distributions, 79% were below the median for weight-for-length; 18.0% were within the 5th percentile for length-for-age, 9.6% for weight-for-age, 20.3% for weight-for-length, and 19.8% for BMI. A lower length- and weight-for-age were statistically associated with being born rurally.

Conclusions

In this delivery-clinic based sample of children in the Khanh Hoa province in Vietnam, the proportions within the WHO-standard 5th percentiles for length-for-age, weight-for-length and BMI in late infancy were 3-4 times higher than expected, which indicate that deficient growth is prevalent. The infants born in a rural area had a lower weight- and length-for-age than their urban counterparts, independent of diarrhoea.</p

International audienceTo study the hydraulic behavior of fouled ballast, an infiltration column 600 mm high and 300 mm in diameter was developed. Five time domain reflectometer (TDR) sensors and five tensiometers were installed at various levels, allowing the measurement of volumetric water content and matric suction, respectively. The material studied was fouled ballast that was formed in the railway track-bed by penetration of fine-grained soil into the ballast. This material is characterized by a high contrast of size between the largest and the smallest particles. During the test, three stages were followed: saturation, drainage, and evaporation. Based on the test results, the water-retention curve and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity were determined. The quality of the results shows the capacity of this large-scale infiltration column in studying the unsaturated hydraulic properties of such fouled ballast
