Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in a population of overweight patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 290 patients, regularly receiving care at the internal medicine ambulatory of the Division of Occupational Medicine at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, who had complaints of overweight. Inclusion criteria were age over 18 years, body mass index equal or higher than 25 kg/m2 and absence of diabetes mellitus. MS was defined according to criteria by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. Results: Prevalence of MS in this group of individuals was 20.0%. When only patients with obesity were assessed, prevalence was 24.6%. Conclusions: Prevalence of MS was similar to that of the general population, even in the group of obese patients, a group that theoretically has higher risk of developing MS.Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência da síndrome metabólica (SM) em uma população de pacientes com excesso de peso.

The aim of this study was to analyse the data obtained from a structured questionaire, and the mercury levels found in the urine of 5 1 dental-surgeons at the SESC headquarters in Porto Alegre in 1997. The analysis of data showed that dental-surgeons had occupational exposition to mercury, whereas most of them showed levels of mercury above the reference value of normality, which is 5ug/g creatinine, despite of this, it is still lower than the maximum allowable level which is 35ug/g creatinine

A single pectinase was found and purified in order to analyze its thermal stability, by salt precipitation and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The pectinase has an estimated Mw of approximately 43.5-47 kDa and optimum pH of 4.0 but is stable in pH ranging from 3.5 to 9.5 and has an optimum temperature of 61 degrees C. It presents thermal stability between 30 and 60 degrees C, has 70% activation in the presence of Ca2+, and was tested using citrus pectin with a degree of methyl esterification (DE) of 26% E-a(d) for irreversible denaturation was 125.5 kJ/mol with positive variations of entropy and enthalpy for that and Delta G((d)) values were around 50 kJ/mol. The hydrolysis of polygalacturonate was analyzed by capillary electrophoresis which displayed a pattern of sequential hydrolysis (exo). The partial identification of the primary sequence was done by MS MALDI-TOF and a comparison with data banks showed the highest identity of the sequenced fragments of exo-PG from R. pusillus with an exo-pectinase from Aspergillus fumigatus. Pectin hydrolysis showed a sigmoidal curve for the Michaelis-Menten plot. This work reports the production of an exo-polygalacturonase (exo-PG) by Rhizomucor pusillus A13.36 in submerged cultivation (SmC) in a shaker at 45 degrees C for 96 h. Heart failure secondary to myocarditis after SARS-CoV-2 reinfection : a case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Cardiac involvement in COVID-19 can range from mild damage to severe myocarditis. The precise mechanism by which COVID-19 causes myocardial injury is still unknown. Myocarditis following administration of COVID-19 vaccines, especially those based on mRNA, has also been described. How- ever, no reports of heart failure following reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 in patients immunized with an inactivated vaccine have been identified. Case description: The patient was a 47-year-old male construction worker of African descent, with type II diabetes and a history of infection by SARS-CoV-2 in December 2020 and May 2021, confirmed by RT-PCR. He received two doses of an inactivated vaccine against COVID-19. Between the two COVID-19 episodes with positive RT-PCR, he had two episodes of bacterial lung infection. After the second episode of SARS-CoV-2 infection, he was diagnosed with severe heart failure as a sequela of myocarditis. Conclusion: It is essential to perform a thorough follow-up after infection with SARS-CoV-2 since, even with proper immunization, it is possible that the patient was reinfected and suffered severe cardiac se- quelae as a consequence. The hypothesis of an etiology associated with the use of an inactivated vaccine against COVID-19, with a potential immune enhancement mechanism following reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, cannot be rejected
