Household dietary diversity and child stunting in East Java, Indonesia

Background and Objectives: More than one-quarter of under-five children in the developing world are stunted, and those with poor nutrient intake are at risk of irreversible cognitive impairment. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dietary diversity and child stunting in an Indonesian context. Methods and Study Design: Dietary diversity was assessed using a maternal-reported checklist of 12 food groups, summed as a Household Dietary Diversity Score. Stunting was defined as ≤-2.0 height-for-age z-score by WHO-Anthro 2005. Trained interviewers administered the household dietary diversity questionnaire to 768 households with children aged <5 years in East Java, Indonesia. Logistic regression models were constructed to test the association be-tween dietary diversity and child stunting. Results: The prevalence of child stunting was 39.4%, and the percent-age of households consuming food groups high in protein and calcium, like dairy products (41%), and meat/poultry, (65%) was lower compared with other food groups. The unadjusted model revealed that higher die-tary diversity scores were associated with lower likelihood of child stunting (OR=0.89; 95% CI=0.80–0.98). This relationship remained significant after adjustment for family size, maternal literacy, food expenditure, breastfeed-ing, energy, and protein intake (OR=0.89; 95% CI=0.80–0.99). Conclusions: The dietary diversity score was moderate, with consumption of dairy products and meat/poultry lowest among 12 food groups. Hence, population interventions should focus on promoting food groups currently lacking in maternal and child diet, including those rich in growth-promoting nutrients like dairy, meat/poultry. These results, from an Indonesian context, confirm the widely observed protective relationship between dietary diversity and child stuntin

Studying stellar binary systems with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna using Delayed Rejection Markov chain Monte Carlo methods

Bayesian analysis of LISA data sets based on Markov chain Monte Carlo methods has been shown to be a challenging problem, in part due to the complicated structure of the likelihood function consisting of several isolated local maxima that dramatically reduces the efficiency of the sampling techniques. Here we introduce a new fully Markovian algorithm, a Delayed Rejection Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo method, to efficiently explore these kind of structures and we demonstrate its performance on selected LISA data sets containing a known number of stellar-mass binary signals embedded in Gaussian stationary noise.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted in CQG (GWDAW-13 proceedings

This study aims to determine the effect of recruitment, motivation and competency analysis on employee performance at Pdam Bondowoso. This research method is quantitative. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews and questionnaires to 98 respondents with census techniques. The analytical tools used in this research are validity test, religious test, classical assumption test, linear regression analysis, t test, and r2 test. The results of the study show, a) recruitment has an effect on the performance of PDAM Bondowoso employees. With a significance level of 0.04 0.05 (value); b) there is a positive and significant effect between motivation on organizational performance with a significance level of 0.00. < 0.05 (a value); c) there is a positive and significant influence between competence and employee performance with a significance level of 0.04 0.05 (values of X2 and x3); d) jointly have a positive and significant effect on organizational performance on permanent employees of the Bondowoso Regency PDAM office. In conclusion, recruitment, motivation, and competence have a significant effect on the performance of PDAM Bondowoso employees. Keywords: Employee Performance, Competence, Motivation, Recruitmen

Spatial Analysis of Leptospirosis Disease in Bantul Regency YOGYAKARTA

Leptospirosis has still become a public health problem in the world, especially in developing countries which have tropical and subtropical climate such as in Indonesia. This research aims at investigating the spread and analyzing the cluster of Leptospirosis cases by using GIS. This research was conducted in 2015 using descriptive qualitative method. The total cases were 35 cased during May-Dec 2014 in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. The data consisted of secondary and primary data collected by using GPS. Univariate and spatial analysis were performed through SaTScan, QGIS desktop 2.4.0 and ArcGIS 1.1.0. The result shows that the distribution of Leptospirosis case in Bantul Regency is equally distributed in all districts with plain topography. The highest case occurs in May (12 cases). Clustering pattern is significant with p value= 0,001 with 11 cases in the cluster

Artificial mutation could be used in the formation of base population for selection. Local varieties which have a wide distance of relationship are expected to have a greater opportunity for obtaining more diverse offspring. The purpose of this study was to select five distinct local tidal swamp rice varieties of South Kalimantan that could be used for parental mutation. The study was conducted from March to December 2009. The distance of varietal relationship was estimated by cluster analysis using the SPSS Programme Version 11.5. Selection of the five best varieties was carried out by the Exponential Rank Method (ERM) applying 7 criteria, namely plant height, number of panicles, panicle length, grain weight/panicle, number of grains/panicle, weight of 1000 grains, and grain yield. Results of the cluster analysis based on a 82.5% similarity level showed that diversities of the 40 accessions of local tidal swamp rice in South Kalimantan were spread in four clusters, namely Cluster I (13 varieties), Cluster II (1 varieties), Cluster III (6 varieties) , and Cluster IV (20 varieties). Five varieties that were selected based on the cluster analysis and the ERM were Siam Harli, Siam Unus (Bumi Makmur), Siam Kuatek, Datu, dan Siam Unus (Barambai)
