Electromgnetic-gravitational cross-sections in external elctromagnetic fields

The classical processes: the conversion of photons into gravitons in the static electromagnetic fields are considered by using Feynman perturbation techniques. The differential cross sections are presented for the conversion in the electric field of the flat condesor and the magnetic field of the selenoid. A numerical evaluation shows that the cross sections may have the observable value in the present technical scenario.Comment: 11 pages, LATEX, no figure

Supergravity duals of gauge theories from F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions

We construct supergravity solutions dual to twisted field theories that are the worldvolume theories of D4-branes wrapped on 2, 3-cycles, and NS-fivebranes on 3-cycles. We first obtain the solutions for the Romans' six-dimensional gauged supergravity theories and then up-lift them to ten dimensions. In particular, we find solutions for field configurations with either non-Abelian fields or B-fields being excited. One of these solutions, in the massless case, is up-lifted to the massless type IIA string theory. This is the first example of such a kind. The cases studied provide new examples of the AdS/CFT duality involving twisted field theories.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, minor changes and references added to match the published versio

Supergravity duals of gauge field theories from SU(2) x U(1) gauged supergravity in five dimensions

We study the SO(4)-symmetric solution of the five-dimensional SU(2) x U(1) gauged N=4 supergravity theory obtained in [hep-th/0101202]. This solution contains purely magnetic non-Abelian and electric Abelian fields. It can be interpreted as a reduction of seven-dimensional gauged supergravity on a torus, which comes from type IIB supergravity on S^3. We also show how to obtain that solution from six-dimensional Romans' theory on a circle. We then up-lift the solution to massless type IIA supergravity. The dual gauge field theory is twisted and is defined on the worldvolume of a NS-fivebrane wrapped on S^3. Two other spatial directions of the NS-fivebrane are on a torus. In the IR limit it corresponds to a three-dimensional gauge field theory with two supercharges.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX file, no figures, typos corrected, references adde

Comorbidities only account for a small proportion of excess mortality after fracture: A record linkage study of individual fracture types

Background: Non-hip non-vertebral fractures (NHNV) constitute the majority of osteoporotic fractures but few studies have examined the association between these fractures, co-morbidity and mortality. Objective: To examine the relationship between individual non-hip non-vertebral fractures, co-morbidities and mortality. Methods: Prospective population-based cohort of 267,043 subjects (45 and Up Study, Australia) had baseline questionnaires linked to hospital administrative and all-cause mortality data from 2006 - 2013. Associations between fracture and mortality examined using multivariate, time dependent Cox models, adjusted for age, prior fracture, body mass index, smoking and co-morbidities (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, thrombosis and cancer) and survival function curves. Population attributable fraction calculated for each level of risk exposure. Results: During 1,490,651 person-years, women and men experienced 7,571 and 4,571 fractures and 7,064 deaths and 11,078 deaths, respectively. In addition to hip and vertebral fractures, pelvis, humerus, clavicle, rib, proximal tibia/fibula, elbow and distal forearm fractures in both sexes, and ankle fractures in men, were associated with increased multivariable adjusted mortality hazard ratios ranging from 1.3 to 3.4. Co-morbidity independently added to mortality such that a woman with a humeral fracture and one co-morbidity had a similarly reduced 5 year survival to that of a woman with a hip fracture and no co-morbidities. Population mortality attributable to any fracture without co-morbidity was 9.2% in women and 5.3% in men. Conclusion: All proximal non-hip, non-vertebral fractures in women and men were associated with increased mortality risk. Co-existent co-morbidities independently further increased mortality. Population attributable risk for mortality for fracture was similar to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, highlighting their importance and potential benefit for early intervention and treatment

    Plug-and-Play Environmental Monitoring Spacecraft Subsystem

A Space Environment Monitor (SEM) subsystem architecture has been developed and demonstrated that can benefit future spacecraft by providing (1) real-time knowledge of the spacecraft state in terms of exposure to the environment; (2) critical, instantaneous information for anomaly resolution; and (3) invaluable environmental data for designing future missions. The SEM architecture consists of a network of plug-and- play (PnP) Sensor Interface Units (SIUs), each servicing one or more environmental sensors. The SEM architecture is influenced by the IEEE Smart Transducer Interface Bus standard (IEEE Std 1451) for its PnP functionality. A network of PnP Spacecraft SIUs is enabling technology for gathering continuous real-time information critical to validating spacecraft health in harsh space environments. The demonstrated system that provided a proof-of-concept of the SEM architecture consisted of three SIUs for measurement of total ionizing dose (TID) and single event upset (SEU) radiation effects, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and deep dielectric charging through use of a prototype Internal Electro-Static Discharge Monitor (IESDM). Each SIU consists of two stacked 2X2 in. (approximately 5X5 cm) circuit boards: a Bus Interface Unit (BIU) board that provides data conversion, processing and connection to the SEM power-and-data bus, and a Sensor Interface Electronics (SIE) board that provides sensor interface needs and data path connection to the BIU
