    Parents Knowledge of Child Passenger Safety Laws and Use of Safety Restraints

    The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an association between the parent’s knowledge of child passenger safety laws and the use of child passenger safety restraints. A review of current literature demonstrates barriers to incorrect use of child passenger safety seats. The literature demonstrated that multiple factors that are involved in inappropriate use of child passenger safety seats. The research was guided by Nola Pender’s framework for Health Promotion Model. The study was comprised of a convenience sample of 34 parents and caregivers from a child development center. Data was collected using the Child Passenger Safety Survey. The data did not show a significant difference between the parents understanding of the law and the use of child passenger safety restraints (p = .2488, Fisher’s Exact test). In addition there was no association between the appropriate use of child passenger safety seats and the education parents received regarding child passenger safety seats (p = 0.1711, Fisher’s Exact test)

    COVID-19 Related Physical and Mental Health Stressors in Families Using A Social Determinants Lens.

    Racial and ethnic minorities, those of lower socioeconomic status (SES), and older adults have experienced higher rates of infection, severity of illness, and mortality from COVID-19 than other groups. These populations are also disproportionately affected by financial and social disruptions caused by the pandemic, including job loss, reduction in community services, and disconnection from supportive networks critically important for the health and well-being of families. Further, these same populations often live in multi- generational households and rely on a family-dependent caregiver model. The aim of this project is to beta test an online questionnaire to identify individual and household risk factors in a racial/ethnic and SES diverse sample in Upstate New York State (NY). The data collected for this project will help us identify strategies to reduce racial/ethnic and SES-based disparities in the physical and health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in upstate NY

Students are commonly tasked with producing a number of software artefacts, for example designs using the Unified Modelling Language (UML). We recently attempted to extend the software engineering experience for a group of second year students with them participating in groups that attempt to replicate industrial practice. This paper reports our investigation into the correlation between the personality of group members, their approach with respect to using design patterns and their learning achievements

    In Conversation Together: Student Ambassadors for Cultural Competence

    Amani and Tai: We’re academic developers interested in working in partnership with students. In 2014, we trialled partnership through working with six Student Ambassadors as part of the Sydney Teaching Colloquium. The Colloquium is the university’s annual teaching conference and usually draws around 300 participants, mainly academics, to discuss teaching and curriculum practices. The theme of the 2014 Colloquium was ‘Is our assessment up to standard?’ The Student Ambassadors: • developed a social media campaign to engage the Sydney student community in the Colloquium; • designed a session on assessment to present at the Colloquium; • devised and executed a Colloquium evaluation strategy; • curated and developed resources; and • contributed to the planning and writing of a co-authored journal publication (Peseta et al., 2016). The experiences and outcomes from the trial gave us courage to try again and so the following year, we engaged another six Student Ambassadors for the 2015 Colloquium. This time the theme was ‘Cultural competence is everyone’s business,’ which linked with the university’s new strategic focus on cultural competence (The University of Sydney Strategic Plan, 2016-2020). We followed the 2014 model described in Peseta et al. (2016), where students were selected via an expression of interest and interview process. We were mainly looking for undergraduate students interested in learning about cultural competence (CC), who could see the relevance of CC to students’ experiences of university more broadly and had creative ideas about how to do it, and who wanted to develop their knowledge of university CC initiatives. The students were paid for their time spent as an ambassador, which involved approximately 40 hours of face-to-face meetings, preparation, participation in the Colloquium, and a post-Colloquium focus group over 3-4 months

    Regulation of fluid reabsorption in rat or mouse proximal renal tubules by asymmetric dimethylarginine and dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase 1

    Nitric oxide prevents hypertension yet enhances proximal tubule Na+ reabsorption. Nitric oxide synthase is inhibited by asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) that is metabolized by dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) whose type 1 isoform is expressed abundantly in the proximal tubule (PT). We hypothesize that ADMA metabolized by DDAH-1 inhibits fluid reabsorbtion (Jv) by the proximal tubule. S2 segments of the PT were microperfused between blocks in vivo to assess Jv in anesthetized rats. Compared with vehicle, microperfusion of ADMA or Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) in the proximal tubule reduced Jv dose dependently. At 10−4 mol/l both reduced Jv by ~40% (vehicle: 3.2 ± 0.7 vs. ADMA: 2.1 ± 0.5, P < 0.01 vs. l-NAME: 1.9 ± 0.4 nl·min−1·mm−1, P < 0.01; n = 10). Selective inhibition of DDAH-1 in rats with intravenous L-257 (60 mg/kg) given 2 h before and L-257 (10−5 mol/l) perfused in the proximal tubule for 5 min reduced Jv by 32 ± 4% (vehicle: 3.2 ± 0.5 vs. L-257: 2.2 ± 0.5 nl·min−1·mm−1; P < 0.01) and increased plasma ADMA by ≈50% (vehicle: 0.46 ± 0.03 vs. L-257: 0.67 ± 0.03 µmol/l, P < 0.0001) without changing plasma symmetric dimethylarginine. Compared with nontargeted control small-interference RNA, knock down of DDAH-1 in mice by 60% with targeted small-interference RNAs (siRNA) reduced Jv by 29 ± 5% (nontargeted siRNA: 2.8 ± 0.20 vs. DDAH-1 knockdown: 1.9 ± 0.31 nl·min−1·mm−1, P < 0.05). In conclusion, fluid reabsorption in the proximal tubule is reduced by tubular ADMA or by blocking its metabolism by DDAH-1. L-257 is a novel regulator of proximal tubule fluid reabsorption

    NETMARK is a flexible, high-throughput software system for managing, storing, and rapid searching of unstructured and semi-structured documents. NETMARK transforms such documents from their original highly complex, constantly changing, heterogeneous data formats into well-structured, common data formats in using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and/or Extensible Markup Language (XML). The software implements an object-relational database system that combines the best practices of the relational model utilizing Structured Query Language (SQL) with those of the object-oriented, semantic database model for creating complex data. In particular, NETMARK takes advantage of the Oracle 8i object-relational database model using physical-address data types for very efficient keyword searches of records across both context and content. NETMARK also supports multiple international standards such as WEBDAV for drag-and-drop file management and SOAP for integrated information management using Web services. The document-organization and -searching capabilities afforded by NETMARK are likely to make this software attractive for use in disciplines as diverse as science, auditing, and law enforcement

    Mitochondrial Function in Oxidative and Glycolytic Bovine Skeletal Muscle Postmortem

    Meat quality is traditionally associated with anaerobic metabolism due to cessation of the oxygen supply post-mortem. However, mitochondrial (mt) function early postmortem may affect the development of meat quality characteristics, such as adenosine triphosphate levels and pH decline. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate mt function ex vivo during the first 24 h postmortem in muscles with differences in mt content. Samples from longissimus lumborum (LL) and diaphragm (Dia) were taken from steers (n = 6) at 1, 3, and 24 h postmortem and frozen to determine citrate synthase (CS) activity and mt protein expression (immunodetection) or were fresh-preserved for high-resolution respirometry. Integrative oxygen consumption rate (picomoles per second per milligram of tissue) was measured and normalized to CS activity as a proxy for mt content (intrinsic mt function, picomoles per second per unit CS). CS activity (P < 0.001) and mt protein expression (P < 0.001) were greater in Dia, which was reflected in mt respiration. Muscle type affected (P < 0.001) integrative leak respiration and was greater in mt from Dia; oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) was also greater in Dia and influenced by time postmortem (muscle × time: P = 0.01). Intrinsic leak and OXPHOS were affected by muscle and time (muscle × time: P = 0.05 and P = 0.01, respectively), with the most pronounced differences at 24 h postmortem. Stimulation of OXPHOS by cytochrome c as an indicator of outer mt membrane integrity was influenced by muscle and time postmortem (muscle × time: P = 0.03); it was greater in mt from LL. Despite intrinsic differences in respiratory function at 24 h, mt from both muscles were intact and coupled at 1 h postmortem. Reduced content and respiratory function in mt from LL are associated with early fragmentation, which could impact protease activation and subsequently meat quality

    Early Postmortem Metabolism and Protease Activation in Fast Glycolytic and Slow Oxidative Bovine Muscles

    Muscle properties and metabolism influence muscle to meat conversion. Fiber type profile impacts glycolytic capacity as well as protein turnover rate in vivo. Our objective was to investigate protease content and activation during the early postmortem period using muscles with known divergent metabolism. Samples from longissimus lumborum (LL) and diaphragm (Dia) were taken from predominantly Angus steer carcasses (n = 6) at 1, 3, and 24 h postmortem and frozen. Myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms, ATP, glycogen, glucose, glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), and lactate concentrations were determined. Procaspase-3, calpain-1, calpastatin, desmin, and troponin-T were assessed by immunodetection. Muscles showed contrasting MyHC profiles, with LL represented primarily by IIx and IIa isoforms (∼88%) whereas Dia contained mostly (80%) type I isoform. Glycogen degradation was more pronounced in LL and coincided with more rapid accumulation of glucose and lactate (P < 0.01). Procaspase-3 content was influenced by muscle (m: P < 0.01), being greater in Dia. Fragments indicating activation of procaspase-3 postmortem were not detected. Calpain-1 autolysis and intact calpastatin (135 kDa) content were influenced by muscle and time (m × t: P < 0.01 and P < 0.01, respectively). Calpastatin fragmentation postmortem was not associated with greater procaspase-3 content. In conclusion, fast glycolytic LL displayed faster protease activation and greater proteolysis during the first 24 h postmortem

    The effect of depression and side effects of antiepileptic drugs on injuries in patients with epilepsy

    Background and purpose People with epilepsy are at increased risk of accidents and injuries but, despite several studies on this subject, data regarding preventable causes are still contradictory. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between injuries, side effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and depression. Methods Data from a consecutive sample of adult patients with epilepsy attending the outpatient clinics at St George's University Hospital in London were included. All patients were asked if they had had any injury since the last clinic appointment and completed the Liverpool Adverse Event Profile (LAEP) and Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy. Results Among 407 patients (243 females, mean age 43.1 years), 71 (17.4%) reported injuries since the last appointment. A two-step cluster analysis revealed two clusters with the major cluster (53.5% of the injured group) showing a total score for LAEP ≥45, a positive Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy screening and presence of AED polytherapy. A total score for LAEP ≥45 was the most important predictor. Conclusions Antiepileptic drug treatment should be reviewed in patients reporting injuries in order to evaluate the potential contribution and burden of AED side effects
