A remarkable new species of Pamianthe (Amaryllidaceae) from the Department of Cauca, Colombia
A new saxicolous species of Amaryllidaceae tentatively assigned to the tribe Clinantheae, Pamianthe ecollis Silverst., Meerow & Sánchez-Taborda, is described from the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental in the department of Cauca, Colombia. The new species differs from the two hitherto known species of Pamianthe in its yellow flowers and in its nearly obsolete perianth tube. The near loss of the perianth tube may be correlated with a change in pollinator. The new species lacks a bulb; it produces a large number of winged seeds that are wind-dispersed. A key to the species of Pamianthe is provided. This is the first record of the genus Pamianthe for Colombia. The phylogenetic position of the genus Pamianthe is discussed

El artículo muestra el desarrollo de un trabajo que pretendía generar opciones tecnológicas sostenibles para el manejo y control del perforador del fruto del tomate N. elegantalis. Estudio de termogravimetría y espectroscopía de impedancias en mangueras de gas domiciliario de acrilonitrilo
Mediante el uso de las técnicas: espectroscopía de impedancias, IS, a presión superior a la ambiente y de análisis termogravimétrico, TGA, se encontró que una manguera comercial de acrilonitrilo usada en redes de gas domésticas e industriales, exhibe conducción iónica cuando ésta se expone a la misma presión que se aplica en la fábrica para fijarla, a través de una férula al conector de gas. De esta forma los conectores de gas no están eléctricamente aislados, incumpliendo con las normas de seguridad establecidas en la legislación de muchos países

Climate warming causes declines in crop yields and lowers school attendance rates in Central Africa
Published online: 19 August 2017.Although a number of recent studies suggest that climate associated shifts in agriculture are affecting social and economic systems, there have been relatively few studies of these effects in Africa. Such studies would be particularly useful in Central Africa, where the impacts of climate warming are predicted to be high but coincide with an area with low adaptive capacity. Focusing on plantain (Musa paradisiaca), we assess whether recent climate change has led to reduced yields. Analysis of annual temperature between 1950 and 2013 indicated a 0.8 °C temperature increase over this 63-year period - a trend that is also observed in monthly temperatures in the last twenty years. From 1991 to 2011, there was a 43% decrease in plantain productivity in Central Africa, which was explained by shifts in temperature (R2 = 0.68). This decline may have reduced rural household wealth and decreased parental investment in education. Over the past two decades, there was a six month decrease in the duration of school attendance, and the decline was tightly linked to plantain yield (R2 = 0.82). By 2080, mean annual temperature is expected to increase at least 2 °C in Central Africa, and our models predict a concomitant decrease of 39% in plantain yields and 51% in education outcomes, relative to the 1991 baseline. These predictions should be seen as a call-to-action for policy interventions such as farmer training programs to enhance the adaptive capacity of food production systems to mitigate impacts on rural income and education
Soluciones terapéuticas para la reconstrucción de la dermis y la epidermis. Oportunidades en el medio antioqueño
In Antioquia (Colombia), there are many patients who suffer dermal injuries caused by accident or disease. Therefore, it is necessary to pursue available, effective and affordable solutions to overcome dermal problems. Physicians and patients are both expecting corrective treatments that can reduce inner tissue exposition and allow the possibility of recovering skin functionality. Although there are many solutions for skin replacement, some obstacles remain, such as: high costs, limited availability of skin for implantation in extended areas, adequate functionality of the restored tissue and immunological rejection. Due to these issues, this article presents some of the existing alternative solutions for patients with skin injuries, considering the histology and physiology of the skin, and regarding the classical and economically attainable solutions to be used in Antioquia.En Antioquia, es necesario buscar una solución disponible, efectiva y económicamente viable para afrontar los problemas de la piel de los pacientes que, por accidentes o enfermedades, han disminuido su calidad de vida y se encuentran aislados a la espera de tratamientos que les permitan recuperar la funcionalidad de su cuerpo y les reduzcan los riesgos por la exposición de los tejidos internos. Las diferentes soluciones existentes en el mercado todavía no han llegado a superar algunos obstáculos tales como el cubrimiento de todas las extensiones, los altos costos, la funcionalidad de los tejidos restaurados, los rechazos de tipo inmune y la escasez de los sitios donantes. Checklist of Orchidaceae from Caquetá, Colombia
A checklist of Orchidaceae from Caquetá Colombia is presented here. We recorded 96 genera and 414 species, exceeding a previous inventory by 272 species. The checklist is conservative in the number of genera and species by including only taxa that were fully and reliably identified and that are either linked to a corresponding herbarium voucher, a living collection specimen, or a photo taken in the field and published at iNaturalist by one of the authors. The documented species diversity in the region could dramatically increase in the next few years with additional collecting efforts in the eastern slope of the Andes nested in Caquetá. About 9 % (414/4600) of all Orchidaceae species recorded for Colombia are reported for this area, showing the important role of Andean-Amazonian foothills and all other ecosystems of this region.
