    Fake supersymmetry versus Hamilton-Jacobi

    We explain when the first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations for black holes (and domain walls) in (gauged) supergravity, reduce to the usual first-order equations derived from a fake superpotential. This turns out to be equivalent to the vanishing of a newly found constant of motion and we illustrate this with various examples. We show that fake supersymmetry is a necessary condition for having physically sensible extremal black hole solutions. We furthermore observe that small black holes become scaling solutions near the horizon. When combined with fake supersymmetry, this leads to a precise extension of the attractor mechanism to small black holes: The attractor solution is such that the scalars move on specific curves, determined by the black hole charges, that are purely geodesic, although there is a non-zero potential.Comment: 20 pages, v2: Typos corrected, references adde

    Epigenetic influences may explain dental differences in monozygotic twin pairs

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Background: Comparisons between monozygotic (MZ) co-twins have tended to focus on the similarities between their dentitions rather than differences. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of discordant expression for simple hypodontia and supernumerary teeth in MZ twin pairs and to explain how phenotypic differences might occur despite their similar genotypes. Methods: Records of 278 pairs of MZ twins, including dental casts and radiographs, were examined and the prevalences of discordant expression for missing upper lateral incisors (ULI) or second premolars (PM2), and of mesiodentes, were determined. Zygosities were confirmed by comparisons of blood markers and DNA. Results: There was evidence of at least one missing ULI or PM2 in 24 of the 278 MZ pairs (8.6 per cent), with 21 of these 24 pairs (87.5 per cent) showing discordant expression. Nine of the 278 MZ pairs (3.2 per cent) displayed evidence of mesiodentes, with eight of these nine pairs (88.9 per cent) being discordant. Conclusion: Our findings show that differences in the expression of missing or extra teeth occur often between MZ co-twins whose genetic make-up predisposes them to simple hypodontia or mesiodentes.     The role of bacterial and algal exopolymeric substances in iron chemistry

It is widely accepted that the complexation of iron (Fe) with organic compounds is the primary factor that regulates Fe reactivity and its bioavailability to phytoplankton in the open ocean. Despite considerable efforts to unravel the provenance of the many organic ligands present in the 'ligand soup' and their contribution to Fe chemistry, much of this pool remains largely unresolved. Bacteria and phytoplankton are known to release exopolymeric substances (EPS) for a variety of functions and it is known that this material has metal binding properties. However, the contribution that bacterial and algal EPS makes to Fe biogeochemistry is not well documented. This study revealed that both bacterial and algal EPS contain functional components known to bind Fe (uronic acid, saccharides) and details the molecular weight distribution of the EPS. It is also demonstrated that components of the EPS have a high affinity for Fe-binding, in some cases similar to that of bacterial siderophores (~KFe'L 1012) and that this material greatly enhances Fe solubility (and, possibly, Fe oxyhydroxide reactivity via prevention of aggregation) in seawater. However, EPS may also accelerate Fe(II) oxidation and thus Fe(II) removal from the system. Our findings indicate that, in remote ocean regions, bacterial and algal EPS could play a significant role in the biogeochemical cycling of Fe and their contribution should be considered to further our understanding of the dynamics of Fe-limited oceans

The final version is available from SWEEP via the URL in this recordThe appendices to this report are available in ORE at http://hdl.handle.net/10871/131805The specific aims of this investigation are to provide an assessment of the current water quality of the Exe Estuary catchment, including tributaries of the Exe Estuary (Figure 1), assessing the drivers for water quality impairment, and impacts of this on estuarine and coastal bivalve shellfish aquaculture (farming of mussels, oysters and clams). This was done through a detailed evaluation of publicly available data and information. The investigation follows a receptor-pathway-source approach to back-track from designated shellfish waters in Lyme Bay and the Exe Estuary to potential upstream sources of contaminants in the Exe Estuary catchment. When reviewing information on potential sources and drivers of water quality issues, we highlight where there are significant data gaps. This report also provides a summary of activities and actions already underway within the wider catchment designed to achieve water quality improvements and discusses potential future catchment management interventions.Natural Environment Research Council (NERC

    Individual Differences in Processing Speed and Working Memory Speed as Assessed with the Sternberg Memory Scanning Task

    The Sternberg Memory Scanning (SMS) task provides a measure of processing speed (PS) and working memory retrieval speed (WMS). In this task, participants are presented with sets of stimuli that vary in size. After a delay, one item is presented, and participants indicate whether or not the item was part of the set. Performance is assessed by speed and accuracy for both the positive (item is part of the set) and the negative trials (items is not part of the set). To examine the causes of variation in PS and WMS, 623 adult twins and their siblings completed the SMS task. A non-linear growth curve (nLGC) model best described the increase in reaction time with increasing set size. Genetic analyses showed that WMS (modeled as the Slope in the nLGC model) has a relatively small variance which is not due to genetic variation while PS (modeled as the Intercept in the nLGC model) showed large individual differences, part of which could be attributed to additive genetic factors. Heritability was 38% for positive and 32% for negative trials. Additional multivariate analyses showed that the genetic effects on PS for positive and negative trials were completely shared. We conclude that genetic influences on working memory performance are more likely to act upon basic processing speed and (pre)motoric processes than on the speed with which an item is retrieved from short term memory

    Charting the landscape of N=4 flux compactifications

    We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computation of the full N=4 mass spectrum reveals the presence of a number of non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable AdS_4 vacua. In addition we find a novel dS_4 solution based on a non-semisimple gauging.Comment: Minor corrections and references added. Version published in JHE
