Transforming Teaching towards Empowered Learning: What #MeToo Taught Us about Anthropology
This article calls for revisiting how we teach anthropology in light of three mutually reinforcing “moments” – the #MeToo Movement, the development of the American Anthropological Association’s first Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault Policy, and shifting student expectations regarding personal safety and wellbeing. By thinking anthropologically about anthropology, against a backdrop of larger questions for the discipline as a whole, we single out the consequences of the “lone anthropologist” trope as it reproduces idealized notions of fieldwork in ways that limit access to the discipline. We suggest ten practical strategies for changing normative pedagogies as a way to increase benefits and reduce harms as we work to minimize risk for sexual violence while preserving the benefits of immersive fieldwork. We conclude by exploring how the classroom itself is feeding back into transforming cultures and institutional structures.
Perturbative quantum analysis and classical limit of the electron scattering by a solenoidal magnetic field
A well known example in quantum electrodynamics (QED) shows that Coulomb
scattering of unpolarized electrons, calculated to lowest order in perturbation
theory, yields a results that exactly coincides (in the non-relativistic limit)
with the Rutherford formula. We examine an analogous example, the classical and
perturbative quantum scattering of an electron by a magnetic field confined in
an infinite solenoid of finite radius. The results obtained for the classical
and the quantum differential cross sections display marked differences. While
this may not be a complete surprise, one should expect to recover the classical
expression by applying the classical limit to the quantum result. This turn not
to be the case. Surprisingly enough, it is shown that the classical result can
not be recuperated even if higher order corrections are included. To recover
the classic correspondence of the quantum scattering problem a suitable
non-perturbative methodology should be applied.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of 13th Mexican School of Particles and

Interactive Narratives: The Future of Storytelling
[Abstract] The way we tell stories is in a constant flux of change and evolution, which results in the innovation of narrative and the roles of reader and author. Lately, this innovation has led towards the ascendance of interactive narratives. Thus, this end-of-degree project aims to examine interactive narratives and their relevance in our present and future. Furthermore, my goal is to provide new information and academic research on the topic, to facilitate discussion and bring attention to a narrative form often overlooked for its recentness. Through the analysis of different media with a core interactive element, such as videogames, virtual reality, fanfiction or boardgames, I will illustrate the journey from the first examples of interactive storytelling to the latest. This study will show how authors and readers have adapted to the appeal of interactive stories, and how these stories interconnected the roles of the two. Interactivity, agency, and immersion theories will help illustrate this new reality.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.FIL). Inglés: estudios lingüísticos y literarios. Curso 2019/202

Music as Medicine: Supporting NASA’s Advancement into Long-Duration Space Missions
Abstract
Considering that a new era for space exploration has begun, space scientists and engineers have devoted their time to develop the capabilities needed to send humans abroad into extended forays in space. Individuals who are subjected to these hostile environments experience various aspects of social isolation and confinement. The stress induced by living under these environmental conditions has been shown to cause changes in brain structures that negatively impact mood cognitive performance. However, it has been found that musical training can positively impact the structural and functional organization of the human brain, thus improving the mood and cognitive performance of individuals. The present study proposes to investigate the effects of musical training on 12 individuals who will spend 9-months in a space analog facility in Antarctica. Mood questionnaires and cognitive tests will be used to assess distinct changes as a response to the environment. The findings of this study will presumably support the idea that musical training prevents cognitive decline and improves psychological health under conditions of isolation and confinement. What researchers learn from this study will potentially help astronauts prepare for longer, farther exploration missions, and will also contribute insight with regard to mitigating the effects of prolonged social isolation and confinement on other members of our population

Testosterone, Dominance, and Depression in Recently Married Couples
Dominance refers to the wide set of behaviors individuals engage in with the intention of achieving or maintaining social status. Considering the relevance of these behaviors in the dynamics of close relationships, this study examined relations among testosterone, dominance, and the emotional health of a total of 225 opposite sex newlywed couples. An original measure of dominance was developed that accounted for both positive and negative manifestations, as well as situational and dispositional qualities of these status-promoting behaviors. Structural equation analyses revealed that dominance behaviors predict depression for both wives and husbands, and that positive and negative aspects of dominance contribute differently to spouses’ depression. Higher levels of depressive symptoms were related to reports of more dispositional hostility for both husbands and wives, as well as to greater submission during a conflict situation. In turn, greater assertiveness was related to fewer depressive symptoms for both husbands and wives. A subset of dominance behaviors reflecting spouses’ appraisals of having had more power, influence, and control relative to their partners during the conflict interaction, exclusively predicted more depressive symptoms for wives. Finally, lower levels of testosterone were indirectly associated with more depressive symptoms for husbands, and this relation was partially mediated by dominance behaviors. Implications of our findings, as well as limitations, are discussed in light of the existent literature and directions for future research on the interpersonal and biological aspects of marital well-being are considered
Machine Learning Tool for Transmission Capacity Forecasting of Overhead Lines based on Distributed Weather Data
