The level of pairs of polynomials
Given a polynomial with coefficients in a field of prime characteristic
, it is known that there exists a differential operator that raises to
its th power. We first discuss a relation between the `level' of this
differential operator and the notion of `stratification' in the case of
hyperelliptic curves. Next we extend the notion of level to that of a pair of
polynomials. We prove some basic properties and we compute this level in
certain special cases. In particular we present examples of polynomials and
such that there is no differential operator raising to its th
power.Comment: 14 pages, comments are welcom

A Token Ring Protocol for Dynamic Ad-hoc Wireless Environments
A wireless ad-hoc networking protocol is presented. The protocol is designed to be flexible, easy to use and adaptable to a wide variety of potential applications. The primary considerations in design are small code size, guaranteed bandwidth access, limited delay, and error resilience in a highly dynamic ad-hoc environment. These considerations are achieved through the use of token ring protocol
Organizing data in arable farming : towards an ontology of processing potato
Arable farmers and their suppliers, consultants and procurers are increasingly dealing with gathering and processing of large amounts of data. Data sources are related to mandatory and voluntary registration (certification, tracing and tracking, quality control). Besides data collected for registration purposes, decision support systems for strategic, tactical and operational tasks yield enormous amounts of mainly digital information. Data of similar nature but with often varying definitions are collected and processed separately for different purposes. This paper describes for an important arable crop - the processing potato - which data requirements and flows exist at present and how they could possibly be described in a unifying ontology. An ontology describes the concepts, attributes and relations in a specific knowledge domain using a standardized representation language. Important concepts in this domain are for example crop, parcel, soil, treatment and farm. The ontology - once elaborated - will reduce the overlap between information models and helps to overcome the problem of data definition and representation. It is a key element for the development of systems that can automatically learn either with the help of expert knowledge or through adequate numerical techniques
A trans-Indian Ocean hydrographic section at latitude 32°South : data report of RRS Charles Darwin cruise #29
A trans-Indian Ocean hydrographic section employing CTD/O2 profilers was conducted between Africa and Australia during
austral spring 1987. The cruise track ranged between 29°S and 34°S; the average latitude of the crossing was 32°S. The purpose of
the cruise was to explore various aspects of the South Indian Ocean including the characteristics of the core water masses of this
ocean, the strength of the subtropical gyre, the structure and transport of deep western-boundary currents, and the net meridional
heat flux. A total of 109 CTD/O2 profiles with associated rosette water sample measurements and 347 XBT profiles were collected,
supplemented by underway upper ocean velocity, bathymetric and sea surface temperature and salinity data. This report detals the
data collection, calibration, and reduction methods, and summarizes the hydrographic observations.Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation through

Catching up with Method and Process Practice: An Industry-Informed Baseline for Researchers
Software development methods are usually not applied by the book.companies are under pressure to continuously deploy software products that meet market needs and stakeholders\u27 requests. To implement efficient and effective development processes, companies utilize multiple frameworks, methods and practices, and combine these into hybrid methods. A common combination contains a rich management framework to organize and steer projects complemented with a number of smaller practices providing the development teams with tools to complete their tasks. In this paper, based on 732 data points collected through an international survey, we study the software development process use in practice. Our results show that 76.8% of the companies implement hybrid methods.company size as well as the strategy in devising and evolving hybrid methods affect the suitability of the chosen process to reach company or project goals. Our findings show that companies that combine planned improvement programs with process evolution can increase their process\u27 suitability by up to 5%
Precision electroweak calculation of the production of a high transverse-momentum lepton pair at hadron colliders
We present a detailed study of the production of a high transverse-momentum
lepton pair at hadron colliders, which includes the exact O(alpha) electroweak
corrections properly matched with leading logarithmic effects due to multiple
photon emission, as required by the experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron and
the CERN LHC. Numerical results for the relevant observables of single Z-boson
production at hadron colliders are presented. The impact of the radiative
corrections is discussed in detail. The presence in the proton of a photon
density is considered and the effects of the photon-induced partonic
subprocesses are analyzed. The calculation has been implemented in the new
version of the event generator HORACE, which is available for precision
simulations of the neutral and charged current Drell-Yan processes.Comment: October 2007, 22p
Dynamics of ampicillin-resistant Enterococcus faecium clones colonizing hospitalized patients: data from a prospective observational study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Little is known about the dynamics of colonizing <it>Enterococcus faecium </it>clones during hospitalization, invasive infection and after discharge.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a prospective observational study we compared intestinal <it>E. faecium </it>colonization in three patient cohorts: 1) Patients from the Hematology Unit at the University Hospital Basel (UHBS), Switzerland, were investigated by weekly rectal swabs (RS) during hospitalization (group 1a, n = 33) and monthly after discharge (group 1b, n = 21). 2) Patients from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands (group 2, n = 25) were swabbed weekly. 3) Patients with invasive <it>E. faecium </it>infection at UHBS were swabbed at the time of infection (group 3, n = 22). From each RS five colonies with typical <it>E</it>. <it>faecium </it>morphology were picked. Species identification was confirmed by PCR and ampicillin-resistant <it>E. faecium </it>(ARE) isolates were typed using Multiple Locus Variable Number Tandem Repeat Analysis (MLVA). The Simpson's Index of Diversity (SID) was calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Out of 558 ARE isolates from 354 RS, MT159 was the most prevalent clone (54%, 100%, 52% and 83% of ARE in groups 1a, 1b, 2 and 3, respectively). Among hematological inpatients 13 (40%) had ARE. During hospitalization, the SID of MLVA-typed ARE decreased from 0.745 [95%CI 0.657-0.833] in week 1 to 0.513 [95%CI 0.388-0.637] in week 3. After discharge the only detected ARE was MT159 in 3 patients. In the ICU (group 2) almost all patients (84%) were colonized with ARE. The SID increased significantly from 0.373 [95%CI 0.175-0.572] at week 1 to a maximum of 0.808 [95%CI 0.768-0.849] at week 3 due to acquisition of multiple ARE clones. All 16 patients with invasive ARE were colonized with the same MLVA clone (<it>p </it>< 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In hospitalized high-risk patients MT159 is the most frequent colonizer and cause of invasive <it>E. faecium </it>infections. During hospitalization, ASE are quickly replaced by ARE. Diversity of ARE increases on units with possible cross-transmission such as ICUs. After hospitalization ARE are lost with the exception of MT159. In invasive infections, the invasive clone is the predominant gut colonizer.</p
