Agrarian revolution in Central America : a comparison of Nicaragua and Honduras using Jeffery Paige's theory of Agrarian revolution
ABSTRACT
In 1979 Nicaragua, under the Sandinistas, experienced a
genuine, socialist, full scale, agrarian revolution.
This thesis examines whether Jeffery Paige's theory of
agrarian revolutions would have been successful in
predicting this revolution and ln predicting
non-revolution in the neighboring country of Honduras.
The thesis begins by setting Paige's theory in the
tradition of radical theories of revolution. It then
derives four propositions from Paige's theory which
suggest the patterns of export crops, land tenure changes
and class configurations which are necessary for an
agrarian and socialist revolution. These propositions
are tested against evidence from the twentieth century
histories of economic, social and political change in
Nicaragua and Honduras. The thesis concludes that Paige's
theory does help to explain the occurrence of agrarian
revolution in Nicaragua and non-revolution in Honduras. A
fifth proposition derived from Paige's theory proved less
useful in explaining the specific areas within Nicaragua
that were most receptive to Sandinista revolutionary
activity
Ferromagnetic resonance in periodic particle arrays
We report measurements of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of arrays
of submicron size periodic particle arrays of permalloy produced by
electron-beam lithography. In contrast to plane ferromagnetic films, the
spectra of the arrays show a number of additional resonance peaks, whose
position depends strongly on the orientation of the external magnetic field and
the interparticle interaction. Time-dependent micromagnetic simulation of the
ac response show that these peaks are associated with coupled exchange and

Read-through Activation of Transcription in a Cellular Genomic Context
Read-through transcription from the adjacent E1a gene region is required for wild-type (wt) activity of the downstream adenovirus E1b promoter early after infection (read-through activation). However, whether a cellular chromosomal template can support read-through activation is not known. To address this issue, read-through activation was evaluated in the context of stably expressed templates in transfected cells. Inhibition of read-through transcription by insertion of a transcription termination sequence between the E1a and E1b promoters reduced downstream gene expression from stably integrated templates. The results indicate that the mechanism of read-through activation does not depend on the structure of early adenovirus nucleoprotein complexes, a structure that is likely to be different from that of cellular chromatin. Accordingly, this regulatory interaction could participate in the coordinated control of the expression of closely linked cellular genes
Self-organization on surfaces: foreword
After decades of work, the growth of continuous thin films, i.e.,
two-dimensional structures, is progressively becoming a technological issue
more than a field of fundamental research. Incidentally self-organization of
nanostructures on surfaces is now an important field of research, i.e.,
structures of dimensionality one or zero, with a steep rise of attention in the
past five years. Whereas self-organization was initially motivated by potential
applications, it has up to now essentially contributed to the advancement of
fundamental science in low dimensions, as model systems could be produced that
could not have been fabricated by lithography. This Special Issue aims at
giving a cross-community timely overview of the field. The Issue gathers a
broad panel of articles covering various self-organization mechanisms, specific
structural characterization, physical properties, and current trends in
extending the versatility of growth. The materials mostly covered here are

Safety and pharmacokinetic assessments of a novel ivermectin nasal spray formulation in a pig model
Recently published data indicates that high ivermectin (IVM) concentrations suppress in vitro SARS-CoV-2 replication. Nasal IVM spray administration may contribute to attaining high drug concentrations in nasopharyngeal tissue, a primary site of virus entrance/replication. The safety and pharmacokinetic performances of a novel IVM spray formulation were assessed in a pig model. Piglets received IVM either orally (0.2 mg/kg) or by one or two nasal spray doses. The overall safety, and histopathology of the IVM-spray application site tissues, were assessed. The IVM concentration profiles measured in plasma and respiratory tract tissues after the nasal spray were compared with those achieved after the oral administration. Animals tolerated well the nasal spray formulation. No local/systemic adverse events were observed. After nasal administration, the highest IVM concentrations were measured in nasopharyngeal and lung tissues. The nasal/oral IVM concentration ratios in nasopharyngeal and lung tissues markedly increased by repeating (12 h apart) the spray application. The fast attainment of high and persistent IVM concentrations in nasopharyngeal tissue is the main advantage of the nasal over the oral route. These original results support the undertaking of future clinical trials to evaluate the safety/efficacy of the nasal IVM spray application in the prevention and/or treatment of COVID-19.Fil: Errecalde, Jorge Oscar. Ivermectin repurposing for COVID-19 therapy: Safety and pharmacokinetic assessment of a novel nasal spray formulation in a pig model
High ivermectin (IVM) concentrations suppress in vitro SARS-CoV-2 replication. Nasal IVM spray (N-IVM-spray) administration may contribute to attaining high drug concentrations in nasopharyngeal (NP) tissue, a primary site of virus entrance/replication. The safety and pharmacokinetic performance of a new N-IVM spray formulation in a piglet model were assessed. Crossbred piglets (10–12 kg) were treated with either one or two (12 h apart) doses of N-IVM-spray (2 mg, 1 puff/nostril) or orally (0.2 mg/kg). The overall safety of N-IVM-spray was assessed (clinical, haematological, serum biochemical determinations), and histopathology evaluation of the application site tissues performed. The IVM concentration profiles measured in plasma and respiratory tract tissues (nasopharynx and lungs) after the nasal spray treatment (one and two applications) were compared with those achieved after the oral administration. Animals tolerated well the novel N–IVM-spray formulation. No local/systemic adverse events were observed. After nasal administration, the highest IVM concentrations were measured in NP and lung tissues. Significant increases in IVM concentration profiles in both NP-tissue and lungs were observed after the 2-dose nasal administrations. The nasal/oral IVM concentration ratios in NP and lung tissues (at 6 h post-dose) markedely increased by repeating the spray application. The fast attainment of high and persistent IVM concentrations in NP tissue is the main advantage of the nasal over the oral route. Forum: gambling technology and regulatory challenges
Most forms of gambling at the dawn of the 21st century are either technology based or technology assisted. Indeed, technology is the enabler of modern business. In many cases all financial reports are derived from systems technology; therefore, so is gambling taxation. Herein lays significant risk that is perhaps not well comprehended by gaming regulatory agencies, which are predominantly staffed and governed by legal, law enforcement and financial experts. This paper discusses regulatory challenges pertaining to gambling technology. From my review of McMullan and Perrier’s (2007) recent article, it is evident that there are several factors influencing regulatory challenges in Canada. Most of the cheating methods raised in the paper can be avoided and in many jurisdictions they have been. However, other countries are exposed to the risks McMullan and Perrier have identified in Canada; the problems raised are endemic and symptomatic of a global concern regarding regulatory challenges
