On the integrability of stationary and restricted flows of the KdV hierarchy.

A bi--Hamiltonian formulation for stationary flows of the KdV hierarchy is derived in an extended phase space. A map between stationary flows and restricted flows is constructed: in a case it connects an integrable Henon--Heiles system and the Garnier system. Moreover a new integrability scheme for Hamiltonian systems is proposed, holding in the standard phase space.Comment: 25 pages, AMS-LATEX 2.09, no figures, to be published in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen.

Reduction of bihamiltonian systems and separation of variables: an example from the Boussinesq hierarchy

We discuss the Boussinesq system with t5t_5 stationary, within a general framework for the analysis of stationary flows of n-Gel'fand-Dickey hierarchies. We show how a careful use of its bihamiltonian structure can be used to provide a set of separation coordinates for the corresponding Hamilton--Jacobi equations.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX2e, report to NEEDS in Leeds (1998), to be published in Theor. Get PDF
The microbiological sanitary quality and safety of leafy greens and strawberries were assessed in the primary production in Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Norway and Spain by enumeration of Escherichia coli and detection of Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Campylobacter. Water samples were more prone to containing pathogens (54 positives out of 950 analyses) than soil (16/1186) and produce on the field (18/977 for leafy greens and 5/402 for strawberries). The prevalence of pathogens also varied markedly according to the sampling region. Flooding of fields increased the risk considerably, with odds ratio (OR) 10.9 for Salmonella and 7.0 for STEC. A significant association between elevated numbers of generic E. coli and detection of pathogens (OR of 2.3 for STEC and 2.7 for Salmonella) was established. Generic E. coli was found to be a suitable index organism for Salmonella and STEC, but to a lesser extent for Campylobacter. Guidelines on frequency of sampling and threshold values for E. coli in irrigation water may differ from region to region

Identification of inhibitors targeting ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase from the xanthomonas citri subsp. Citri phytopathogenic bacteria

Ferredoxin-NADP(H) reductases (FNRs) deliver NADPH or low potential one-electron donors to redox-based metabolism in plastids and bacteria. Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for citrus canker disease that affects commercial citrus crops worldwide. The Xcc fpr gene encodes a bacterial type FNR (XccFPR) that contributes to the bacterial response to oxidative stress conditions, usually found during plant colonization. Therefore, XccFPR is relevant for the pathogen survival and its inhibition might represent a strategy to treat citrus canker. Because of mechanistic and structural differences from plastidic FNRs, XccFPR is also a potential antibacterial target. We have optimized an activity-based high-throughput screening (HTS) assay that identifies XccFPR inhibitors. We selected 43 hits from a chemical library and narrowed them down to the four most promising inhibitors. The antimicrobial effect of these compounds was evaluated on Xcc cultures, finding one with antimicrobial properties. Based on the functional groups of this compound and their geometric arrangement, we identified another three XccFPR inhibitors. Inhibition mechanisms and constants were determined for these four XccFPR inhibitors. Their specificity was also evaluated by studying their effect on the plastidic Anabaena PCC 7119 FNR, finding differences that can become interesting tools to discover Xcc antimicrobials

Treatment of atrial fibrillation with a dual defibrillator in heart failure patients (TRADE HF): protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Heart failure(HF) and atrial fibrillation(AF) frequently coexist in the same patient and are associated with increased mortality and frequent hospitalizations. As the concomitance of AF and HF is often associated with a poor prognosis, the prompt treatment of AF in HF patients may significantly improve outcome.Methods/design: Recent implantable cardiac resynchronization (CRT) devices allow electrical therapies to treat AF automatically. TRADE-HF (trial registration: NCT00345592; http://www.clinicaltrials.gov) is a prospective, randomized, double arm study aimed at demonstrating the efficacy of an automatic, device-based therapy for treatment of atrial tachycardia and fibrillation(AT/AF) in patients indicated for CRT. The study compares automatic electrical therapy to a traditional more usual treatment of AT/AF: the goal is to demonstrate a reduction in a combined endpoint of unplanned hospitalizations for cardiac reasons, death from cardiovascular causes or permanent AF when using automatic atrial therapy as compared to the traditional approach involving hospitalization for symptoms and in-hospital treatment of AT/AF.Discussion: CRT pacemaker with the additional ability to convert AF as well as ventricular arrhythmias may play a simultaneous role in rhythm control and HF treatment. The value of the systematic implantation of CRT ICDs with the capacity to deliver atrial therapy in HF patients at risk of AF has not yet been explored. The TRADE-HF study will assess in CRT patients whether a strategy based on automatic management of atrial arrhythmias might be a valuable option to reduce the number of hospital admission and to reduce the progression the arrhythmia to a permanent for

Acute outcome after a single cryoballoon ablation: Comparison between Arctic Front Advance and Arctic Front Advance PRO

BACKGROUND: The novel fourth-generation cryoballoon (CB4) potentially allows for enhanced catheter maneuverability and more frequent capture of pulmonary vein (PV) potentials which can be used to monitor real-time PV isolation (PVI). The aim of our study is to compare the acute procedural endpoints between the CB4 and second-generation cryoballoon (CB2). METHODS: A single-center retrospective chart review was used to examine 50 consecutive patients with drug-refractory atrial fibrillation undergoing CB4-based PVI. Procedural data and acute success of these patients were compared to 50 propensity-matched controls who underwent cryoballoon ablation procedure using CB2. RESULTS: Procedures performed with the CB4 showed significant shorter fluoroscopy time (14.8 \ub1 5.5 vs 18.0 \ub1 6.5 minutes, P = .04), shorter procedure time (58.3 \ub1 15.7 vs 65.3 \ub1 21 minutes, P = .13), and shorter total ablation time (10.8 \ub1 1.5 vs 13.8 \ub1 1.9 minutes, P = .42). The real-time PVI visualization rate was 33.3% in the CB2 group and 74.7% in the CB4 group (P < .001). CB4 was correlated to significant increase of acute real-time recordings with regard to all the single PV (left superior PV: 58% vs 84%, P = .02; left inferior PV: 26% vs 71%, P = .001; right superior PV 29% vs 61%, P = .01; and right inferior PV 19% vs 58%, P = .002). CONCLUSION: The CB4 was more often able to capture real-time recordings of PV potentials and the subsequent acute PV isolation

The Hamiltonian Structure of the Second Painleve Hierarchy

In this paper we study the Hamiltonian structure of the second Painleve hierarchy, an infinite sequence of nonlinear ordinary differential equations containing PII as its simplest equation. The n-th element of the hierarchy is a non linear ODE of order 2n in the independent variable zz depending on n parameters denoted by t1,...,tn−1{t}_1,...,{t}_{n-1} and αn\alpha_n. We introduce new canonical coordinates and obtain Hamiltonians for the zz and t1,...,tn−1t_1,...,t_{n-1} evolutions. We give explicit formulae for these Hamiltonians showing that they are polynomials in our canonical coordinates

Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy: the Guilty Party in Adipogenesis

    Get PDF
Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a genetic cardiac condition characterized by the replacement of the ventricular myocardium with fibro-fatty tissue, by arrhythmias and sudden death. Adipogenesis in ACM is considered an aberrant remodeling following myocardial loss. Which cell type(s) is (are) responsible for the adipose replacement is still matter of debate. A systematic overview of the different cells that have been, over time, considered as main players in adipose replacement is provided. The comprehension of the cellular component giving rise to arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy substrate defects may represent both an essential tool for mechanistic studies of disease pathogenesis and a novel possible therapeutic target
