Objectives/HypothesisNo biomarkers are used to estimate the prognosis in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In our previously published work, we have reported the prognostic value of CD44 and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)−1α in patients with stage I disease.Study DesignIn this study, we tested our previous observations in a larger cohort. We also studied the predictive value of common lymphatic endothelial and vascular endothelial receptor (CLEVER)−1 in this material.MethodsCD44, HIF1α, and CLEVER-1 were immunohistochemically analyzed in paraffin-embedded tissue material of stage I OSCC patients treated at three Finnish university hospitals. Microscopy results were correlated with OSCC outcome.ResultsAs in our pilot study, the CD44lowHIF1αhigh signature was associated with poorer disease-free survival. Clear correlations between CLEVER-1 expression and clinical outcome were not evident.ConclusionOur results suggest that immunohistochemistry of CD44 and HIF1α may be useful in identification of patients with poor prognoses. These parameters could be used to select the optimal treatment modalities for stage I OSCC patients.</p

Comparative constructions of similarity in Northern Samoyedic languages

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the suffixes which are used in Northern Samoyedic languages to build comparative constructions of equality. Depending on the language, the suffixes may perform three functions: word-building, form-building, and inflectional. When they mark the noun, they serve as simulative suffixes and are employed to build object comparison. In the inflectional function, these suffixes mark the verb and are a means of constructing situational comparison. In this case, they signal the formation of a special mood termed the Approximative. This paper provides a detailed description of the Approximative from paradigmatic and syntagmatic perspectives

Really? What is actually going on? Discourse words in between semantics and pragmatics

This paper is devoted to the problem of so-called discourse words. The first part is a survey, presenting some theoretic concepts, suggested by a number of linguists to define the status of lexical units (consisting of one or more words) that are felt to be pragmatically significant, even if they seem to lack a lexical meaning. The second part is com prised by a brief report of a contrastive investigation into the Russian discourse words v samom dele ʽreallyʼ and na samom dele ʽactuallyʼ, and their Finnish equivalents in a parallel corpus of Russian fiction texts and their translations into Finnish (ParRus located in Tampere). The results show that the two Russian lexemes are rendered with a number of different Finnish discourse words in the Finnish translations, while the distribution of v samom dele and na samom dele are radically different. The result is corroborated also by a collocation test using the data of the National corpus of the Russian language. Acta (1979), in press.Author Institution:Infrared and Raman band contours of gaseous 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene-d3d_{3} and Raman band contours of gaseous 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene have been recorded under moderate resolution. First order Coriolis constants have been calculated for the infrared and Raman active EE^{\prime} fundamentals using computer simulation of the contours. Coriolis constants of the Raman active EE^{\prime\prime} fundamentals are also reported and compared to those predicted in an earlier study1study^{1}. Several infrared overtone and combination bands of EE^{\prime} symmetry of the deuterated trifluorobenzene have been simulated and the ``effective’’ Coriolis constants determined. Agreement between observed values of ζeffz\zeta^{z}_{eff} and the values predicted from ζiz\zeta^{z}_{i} constants of the constituent degenerate fundamentals is fairly good. The assignments of the overtone and combination bands of both molecules have been reexamined

Energy transfer in LH2 of Rhodospirillum Molischianum, studied by subpicosecond spectroscopy and configuration interaction excition calculations.

Two color transient absorption measurements were performed on a LH2 complex from Rhodospirillum molischianum by using several excitation wavelengths (790, 800, 810, and 830 nm) and probing in the spectral region from 790 to 870 nm at room temperature. The observed energy transfer time of ∼1.0 ps from B800 to B850 at room temperature is longer than the corresponding rates in Rhodopseudomonas acidophila and Rhodobacter sphaeroides. We observed variations (0.9-1.2 ps) of B800-850 energy transfer times at different B800 excitation wavelengths, the fastest time (0.9 ps) was obtained with 800 nm excitation. At 830 nm excitation the energy transfer to the B850 ring takes place within 0.5 ps. The measured kinetics, as well as steady-state absorption and CD spectra, are consistent with those calculated with the configuration interaction exciton method (CIEM) [Linnanto et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 1999, 103, 8739]. Fully excitonic simulation of the CD spectrum of the LH2 of Rs. molischianum is presented for the first time. The calculations put the

Investigations of Chl α aggregates cross-linked by dioxane in 3-methylpentane

In this work, dioxane-bound aggregates of chlorophyll a are prepared in 3-methylpentane. The properties of the aggregates are studied by using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies. The Qy-region absorption spectrum of the chlorophyll α-dioxane aggregate shows four clearly resolvable narrow bands with comparable intensities. The band maxima are located at 683, 689, 698 and 702 nm. The emission spectrum consists of two emission bands centred at 699 and 702 nm suggesting the presence of two types of aggregates. High degree of fluorescence polarization is detected yielding the angles between the absorption transition moments with respect to the 702 nm emission transition moment. The circular dichroism signal is strong and the sign sequence follows that of the polarization spectrum. ψ-type effect is discovered due to long-range interactions within the sizable aggregate frame. The insensitivity of the time-resolved emission kinetics to the temperature indicate the excitation delocalization length to be short. The rapid loss of time-resolved anisotropy at certain wavelengths supports the energy transfer to take place. The independence of the excitation spectrum over a broad range of emission wavelengths suggests that the two diverse spectral types are found within the same macro-aggregate and that they are coupled together by the energy transfer. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V
